Proto:Mario Kart DS/USA Kiosk Demo
This page details one or more prototype versions of Mario Kart DS.
The kiosk demo of Mario Kart DS was used in stores prior to the game's release, and contains several differences from the final.
General
- Menus have slightly different graphics.
- Several tracks have music that is changed or a slower variant.
- Sound effects are different
- Tracks have slight differences
Unused Items
Chain Chomp Item
The Chain Chomp from Double Dash!! makes a small appearance in this demo, but was later replaced with the Bullet Bill. While the item does flash by in the item rotator (as seen in this expertly-timed screenshot), you cannot receive it. Perhaps it was never coded, or the coding wasn't finished when the demo was released.
Purple Koopa Shell
In the game's files, there is a texture which shows a purple Koopa shell. However, there is no data for such an item.
Unused Music
SEQ_CIRCUIT2
This music is heard in unused tracks in this demo, that do not have their own music. It does not exist in the final game.
Emblem Editor
The emblem editor has a different appearance compared with the final version. The top screen isn't used at all.
You can create an emblem, but you cannot save it.
You can access it with an Action Replay code:

Unused Courses
The kiosk demo has textures for the unused courses because the textures are loaded from the models themselves, not as separate files. This makes some of the levels easier than in the final because if you fall off most of them, the game crashes.
old_mario_gc (GCN Mario Circuit)
The Goombas, trees, itemboxes, etc., aren't here and you can drive on grass as if it was road. It was probably a retro track test course as its value is 02 and there are three itemboxes at the start of the course, likely for testing.
dokan_course (Pipe Course)
Could have been a Kart Collision test course because of the 'pipes' and the bendy road. The value is 04.
nokonoko_course (Koopa Troopa Course)
This course doesn't load on anything except the Slot-2 Supercard, NO$GBA and DeSmuME because for some reason, the course is disabled but the Slot-2 Supercard SD, NO$GBA Emulator and DeSmuME Emulator somehow enable the level. Also, the water appears where you can see it normally (but it goes down too far and disappears, then comes back up.) The value is 08.
test_circle
A test track. What's strange is that the value is 15. The rest are 02-08, but this track is 15.
test1_course
It crashes unless you hack the game to add koopa_block.nsbmd. Also, the model is a very early Rainbow Road model. Its value is 05.
luigi_course
This is a really early build of Waluigi Pinball. It looks more like a test track. Sometimes, the CPUs will fall off because they go too near the flipper and fly off. Its value is 03.
wario_course
A duplicate of Wario Stadium with no fireballs and three itemboxes like in old_mario_gc. Its value is 07.
mini_block_course (GCN Block City)
Its value is 29. The CPUs are really stupid, and don't use their items or blow up balloons. If you replace it with a course, they just slam into the walls. Also, the course has a buggy Mission Run mission file. In the video, Block City is the first course. The course is unfinished and has no blocks, but the itemboxes are complete. There is a hole in one of the block areas, because the Mission Run file involves pushing Big Bully into the hole. This course does have respawns. This also takes up 2D, 2E and 2F but balloons don't appear on these values.
donkey_course
This was what DK Pass looked like at the time the kiosk demo was created. It has a different path and like old_mario_gc, you can drive on the grass as if it was road. Falling off crashes the game.
mini_course1
This version of Nintendo DS differs from the final. It has the DS logo instead of the MKDS logo, and a green/orange sky background. This course has respawns. You can drive on the side like on donkey_course. This level was probably added into the final later in development than the others, as it looks like a test track here. The value is 2A.
