The ROM's file path is other.7z\SFC.7z\SFC\ソースデータ\StarFox2\SF2\SF.ROM, however, its header needs to be patched to make it bootable. Apply this patch to fix it.
General Differences
- This is the first known build to include the "This game is designed only to play with a normal controller" screen when a Super Scope/SNES mouse is plugged in.
- The Nintendo logo when booting up the game is the same shape as later builds, but the texture is still the one from the Winter CES build.
- The animation for the mothership zooming off into the distance has been revised and its music has been properly implemented, but both are still different from later builds.
- Most of the final music has been implemented, while other tracks are yet to be identical to their finals (such as the mothership cutscene, as mentioned earlier). Most of these were to compensate for this build's framerate being slower than later builds.
- The characters' dialogue portraits + Select Pilots portraits have their graphics finalized.
- Astropolis now has a firey-looking background. The fire effect would be removed by the June 22, 1995 build.
- Andross' opening dialogue is colored differently; The first textbox is black, the second is blue, and the third is red.
- The first world map cutscene shows the carriers getting into position, but the missiles and bases just show up instantly, thus getting to General Pepper quicker than later builds.
- The health bar + 5 bombs are displayed on the map during this cutscene.
- All characters still have the same amount of health and default special weapons (10 health, 5 bombs)
- Miyu and Fay do not start with twin blasters.
- Miyu and Fay's arwings look more like Fox and Falco's on the pilot select screen, though aren't exactly the same.
- Although all characters have the same sized charge gauges, they charge at the same speed that they would in later builds.
- Instead of showing stats, the designation of each Arwing is shown, similar to previous post-May builds.
- The final control scheme has been implemented, and as such, were control schemes C and D.
- It is still not yet possible to switch pilots on the map with the Select button.
- The world map now matches up with later builds, with Corneria, the Lylat System, and Astropolis visible on a single screen.
- You can no longer speed up time from the world map.
- When returning to the world map, a sound effect plays. This is absent in the June 22, 1995 build, but was reinstated in the final.
- The gameplay aspect is now more close to the final product, infiltrating carriers, battling Star Wolf, and blowing up bases from the inside.
- The hud now adds a decimal to the time count (10 in-game seconds = 1 world map second), but denotes time with a MIN instead of an S like in the December 28, 1994 build. The world map also says MIN next to the time number.
- The amount of targets left is now denoted with one digit (for example, 3 instead of 03).
- Corneria's damage meter is now spelled correctly
- The "Clear Time" screen displays as soon as the player destroys a carrier/planetary base.
- There is a small line of purple pixels (next to the decimal number) replaces the denoting S for the "Clear Time" screen. This was likely an error, as it would be removed in later builds.
- The first-person mode has been re-instated from the pre-Winter CES builds, but it is not switched to automatically in space battles, defaulting to the third-person camera.
- The Walker doesn't make any sound when moving normally, but does have audio when dropping from a height or strafing.
- The Walker's strafing animation is similar to earlier builds where it side hops.
- Unlike the June 22, 1995 build, the Walker can jump with both A and Y in the default control scheme.
- The twinkle sound for Star Wolf's entry is missing.
- Star Wolf's Wolfens are almost completely grey, lacking the blue or red coloring depending on the pilot.
- The bug where you could transform into the Walker in space battles in the June 22, 1995 build does not exist.
- Frame rates are generally a bit worse than other builds.
- This build has a tendency to softlock after certain events, such as when Andross speaks on the map without sending out a boss, or when the door to Fortuna's base opens.
| To do: Possibly provide a patch fix for the softlock issues? |
- When the "Corneria Fell" screen fades in from the white, the gleam from Andross's robotic eye has improper transparency until the fade-in ends. This would be fixed in the June 22, 1995 build.
- Most screen fade-ins and fade-outs are way slower than in later builds.
- General Pepper's panicked animation is slightly different, using a sprite of his normal stance instead of static.
- The record screen uses letters instead of star rankings like in the June 22, 1995 build, except the lowest rank is F instead of E.
- The number 3 was altered slightly in later builds.
- The main record screen lacks screen fades, and a background.
- Time is denoted with an IN and counts 4 digits instead of 3.
- The empty rectangles, where the profiles of the player and their partner will go, are a light grey instead of black.
- It doesn't keep track of the Pepper medallions.
- Time is titled "Total Time" instead of just "Time".
