So very stubbly.
This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion.
Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article?

This early prototype of Terraria is one of two prototypes leaked on 4chan before the game officially released in 2011. It is clearly unfinished, but all the basics are in for the game to give more or less the same experience you get in release.

This prototype along with its earlier build can be downloaded from archive.org.

Gameplay Differences

  • There is no splash screen, you load directly onto the main menu.
  • There is no copyright information in the bottom right corner.
  • The sound will keep playing after clicking out of the window, unlike the final.
  • Does not contain Hellstone Brick, Hellstone Brick Wall, or the Hellforge.
  • Does not contain beds.
  • Does not contain flower pots.
  • There is no way to edit the controls, or the parallax.
  • The game starts playing boss music if you're near a boss, while the final game includes the boss music for the goblin event.
  • Pressing F shows an FPS counter, as opposed to F10 in final.
  • Only has 193 items, as compared to release 234.
  • One of the lines of help text is changed from "Demonic alters can usually be found in the corruption. You will need to be near them to craft some items." to "Demonic alters are hidden all over the world. You will need to be near them to craft some items." in release.
  • Player death text changed from "[Player Name] was slain..." to "You were slain..." in final.
  • When creating a world, it gives an estimate for how large the world file will be.
  • In the final, the game has two additional checks on the Blood Moon to make sure it only happens if there's a player with over 100 max health, and that it doesn't also spawn the Eye of Cthulhu on the same night.
  • Eye of Cthulhu will never randomly spawn at night in this version.
  • No jungle chests will generate.
  • No "hell houses" in the underworld will generate.

Enemies

  • Default spawnrate is 850 instead of 700.
  • Pinky and Black Slime are absent.
  • Many of the enemies have different stats from this version compared to final.

Graphical Differences

  • The player has a belt which is removed from the final.
  • The Re-Logic and RA Logo are both absent.
  • Armor still uses the early animations from the Pre-Alpha phase.

  • The cooldown sprite is absent.
  • The 6th "chain" vine is absent.

Items

There's a handful of item sprite differences, most of them related to the armor sets, which are just reskins of the "Pants" and "Tunic" from the Pre-Alpha.

NPCs

  • The Nurse is missing two of her lines from when you're below 1/3rd health, and one of her lines from when you're below 2/3rds health. In this version she also has the chance to say "Bend over and grab your ankles.", a line removed from release.
  • One of the Dryad's random pre-Skeletron lines was changed from "Have you seen that old man walk around the temp? He doesn't look well at all..." to "Have you seen the old man walking around the dungeon? He doesn't look well at all...". Her only night time line typos "wandering" for "wondering". She is also missing 5 of her random lines.
  • The Demolitionist is missing 3 of his random lines.
  • Most of the NPCs are clearly unfinished, only utilizing 3-5 frames of animation as opposed to the 14-16 in the release.
  • All of the humanoid NPCs are highly modified versions of sprites from Final Fantasy V.

Music

  • This build does not feature the Jungle soundtrack, present in the final release.

Misc

  • The game only has three window titles instead of five.
  • Female hurt sounds are not present.
  • The game has no check to make sure you can't load incompatible world saves.
  • The game doesn't keep track of how many Shadow Orbs you've smashed.
  • In this version it's slightly more likely for large and small caves to generate with lava.

Debug Mode

This build also includes a very sparse debug mode.

  • Holding down left click instantly mines whatever block is being touched.
  • Right click teleports you to your cursor.
  • The camera is now manually controlled by the arrow keys.
  • The cursor now also functions as a small light source.
