SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom (GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox)/Unused Textures
This is a sub-page of SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom (GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox).
| To do: Re-rip the textures from the Xbox version, which are higher quality (with the exception of the early Goo Lagoon textures). |
This game has many textures left over from early concepts, as well as some oddities that were probably never intended to be seen in-game.
Contents
Early Menu Textures
The files for the title screen, mnu3.HIP/HOP, have many early HUD graphics.
- ui_underwear is the underwear health, as seen in several early screenshots and gameplay videos. It was later replaced with another texture.
- The golden spatulas on the pause menu were originally meant to be 2D textures. In the final game, they're 3D models.
- ui_shinyobject is an early shiny object icon. Like the golden spatulas, they're a 3D model in the final game.
- ui_sb_doodle is the classic SpongeBob doodle, while ui_sb_doodle_fill is the color filled in. Whatever he was used for, doing something probably colored him in.
- ui_anchor.txd is an anchor with no real obvious purpose. It can be seen in prerelease footage. It was later used in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie for Patrick's Macho Throw.
- ui_krabbypatty is a Krabby Patty with no real obvious purpose either.
- ui_bubblemeter is a bubble meter that could've been related to SpongeBob's bubble-based attacks.
- ui_pineapple_off and ui_pineapple_on are pineapple arrows for the pause menu. In the final game, they're jellyfish.
- ui_bubble_small is a small, opaque bubble.
Temporary Texture
- temp is a placeholder texture that can be found in the files of almost every level. Strangely, there are some boxes in several levels hidden somewhere with this texture. It is also found in The Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer.
Early Textboxes
- textbox_sign is a textbox border likely meant for signs, judging by the filename.
- text_bg_temp is an alternate textbox found in Jellyfish Fields (jf01).
Hidden Credits
The SpongeBall Arena has secret credits featuring silly play on words of the developer's roles. These were likely written by Gregory Ecklund, the Lead Animator (or "Lead Animosity", if you will).
Muscle SpongeBob
chr_sb_musclearms.RW3, found in the final phase of the Robo-SpongeBob fight (b303), is a texture for SpongeBob himself with muscles. The texture is actually used for Robo SpongeBob's eyes in that level, but the whole texture itself is never seen.
Miscellaneous Textures
- temp_platform_3x3_texture.RW3 is a purple rock texture found in the Rock Bottom Museum (rb02).
- tongueboard_test_sand.RW3, found in several levels, is a texture related to slides.
- An "ON!" flag found hidden in the texture of the pressure pads. It is also found in the The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.
- sky_cinematic_morn.RW3, found in the prologue at the beginning of the game (hb00); the used version relates to evening meaning this was clearly meant for when SpongeBob wakes up and sees his house wrecked.
- Spotlight_button.rw3 is a texture found in the Villain Containment Center (bc05). While some of it is used for pipes, the spotlight button part is not used. It also uses the early button texture.
- bathroom_door.RW3 is the door on the Rock Bottom restroom, curiously found in the Bikini Bottom Theater (hb10). Normally, it is part of the same texture as the restroom.
- pat_bed.RW3 are presumably textures for Patrick's bed, found in Patrick's Rock (hb04). It is used for the ladder in Patrick's house, but no bed is seen in Patrick's rock.
- target.RW3 is an early version of the icon used for stuff you can bubble bash, found in GL01's New Folder.
- fruits_leaves.RW3 is related to the throw fruit, and is found in GL01's New Folder. Based on the name, these textures were meant to be used for the throw fruit's base and insides.
- basic_button.RW3 and basic_button_grn.RW3 are early versions of the button texture, which can be found in GL01's New Folder.
- BXCruiseBubbleDistort is possibly one of the biggest textures in the game, at a size of 512x512! While this is used for the Xbox port, it has coloring not seen normally.
- BXWaterEnvMap, found in the same archive as the previous texture, was probably meant for, you guessed it, water reflections. This was later used in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie presumably for the real life levels.
