Super Mario Land 2 introduces the concept of space exploration to the Mario series. Also Wario.

Early Mario Graphics

Early Mario Final Mario
Never die with a bow tie on Hello Mario

Some early Mario graphics can be found in the ROM. While largely identical to the final Mario tileset, there are some differences, mostly relating to poses of Mario from the front. The fireball is also much darker.

Mario's Castle

And it comes a-crumbling down

Obey Wario, destroy Mario

These tiles are found with the rest of the Mario's Castle overworld graphics, but they aren't used. The black cloud above the castle covers up most of the graphics.

Oooh

This is a mock-up of how the full castle should look, using the unused tiles.

Unused Map Locations

To access these locations, change memory address A840 to the right address while on the main map.

Cave Entrance

What's in that cave?!

Location ID: 10

While you do go through this cave to get to Mario's Castle, there's no way to get Mario to stop here. Nevertheless, this map location exists. There might have been a level here originally.

Space Entrance

Location ID: 12

Map location IDs default to this spot when they have no data. Unlike those map locations, you can actually "enter" this one, and it takes you the Space Zone. This might have been used for quick access to the Space Zone, bypassing the Hippo Zone.

Unused Cloud

Right above Pumpkin Zone there was once a floating cloud located at 0x3CC04 change FF to 09.
