This article is a work in progress.
...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.
So very stubbly.
This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion.
Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article?

Super Mario Maker 2 is the sequel to the Wii U original, featuring a new style based off of Super Mario 3D World with unique features, a full-fledged Story Mode, local and online multiplayer (in both co-op and competitive flavors), new elements in Course Maker, various tweaks around the edges, and the removal of Mystery Mushrooms (you'll get your chance one day, Windows logo).

Outside of being on a console that people actually bought, that's pretty much it.

Unused Graphics

General

Hmmm...
To do:
  • Add photo or render of the 3D World metal block.
  • The Castle Bridge tiles are actually used if a glitch is triggered.

Placeholder Castle Bridge

Your favorite graphics from Super Mario Maker are back. Once again, there are castle bridge graphics that resemble the Super Mario Bros. ones, and once again they're unused. The snow theme (both day and night) and the sky theme even have unique bridge sprites!

Mysteriously, almost every finished castle bridge design has brown bits at the bottom that seemingly are from the placeholder tiles. Seemingly just a minor mistake done when Nintendo added the finished sprites.

Metal Block

Metal blocks appear in all tilesets. These are, in fact, used to prevent the player going over the top or under the bottom of Spike Traps/Blocks, if placed on the top or bottom of the level, respectively. Without hacking, the only way to see them is using several sound effects that can shake the camera (like 'Clatter' or 'Drama!') or in the 3D World style, because of the 3D camera angle.

Curiously, crudely-drawn placeholder graphics for the Clear Pipe exist in both versions of the Forest tileset. In the final game, the clear pipe is exclusive to the 3D World game style, which seems to indicate this object originally would have been available in all game styles.

However, by performing a glitch that allows you to port objects over from 3D World and back, these graphics are indeed used for the Clear Pipe in this specific level theme.

Unused Sounds

Some sounds are leftover from the first game.

Hmmm...
To do:
Check for any other unused sounds.

Super Mario Bros.

CharaMario_Common_appeal_5turn

Leftover sound from Costume Mario when appealing.

M1_HEN_JUMP

M1_HEN_JUMP_FUWA

Two sounds of Weird Mario from the first game still exist within the game data.

NewMario2_GoldEffect

A sound of Gold Mario from New Super Mario Bros. 2, used for the gold and silver costumes in the first game.

Removed Course Parts

Hmmm...
To do:
Add other languages, check if "Green Koopa Troopa" and "Red Koopa Troopa" are used and check if any of these are used in tutorials.
Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: See if there is any code for using these.

The files which contains the names of the course parts as used on the parts menu ( MessageData\ReferenceMsg_*\PartsIconName.msbt, *\OtherPartsName.msbt and &PartsIconName_plural.msbt) contain some names for course parts that don't exist in the game. Alternative pluralisations of these do not exist, whereas they do for some used objects.

Label USA English
NokonokoShell Koopa Shell

Presumably a form of the Koopa Troopa, like with Buzzy Beetles and Spinies.

Label USA English
Stone Stone

This is for the Stone object used in the Story Mode levels that use the Story Mode exclusive "Reach the goal while holding a stone" Clear Condition.

Label USA English
BuilderBox Builder Box

Builder Mario's boxes can't be placed in the course maker.

Label USA English
Fireball Fireball

No kind of Fireball can be placed in the course maker.

Label USA English
QueenShoes Stiletto

The Stilettos cannot be placed directly.

Label USA English
Shell Shells
Hmmm...
To do:
Add a description.

Like the Stilettos, Shoes cannot be placed directly.

Yoshis can't be placed directly.

Removed Text Files

The msbp file contains references to some (uncompiled) text files that don't have equivalents in the game:

Unused Behaviors

Dying in the Hub

If the player hacks the game to remove the invisible edge barriers in Story Mode and fall from the front, the screen will fade out and the game will bring said player back to the middle of the hub world. This was likely intended as a failsafe if the player managed to glitch past the invisible walls, but it may just be a leftover as the Story Mode hub runs on the same engine as past 3D and 2D Mario games.

Oddities

New Super Mario Bros. U Pipes

New Super Mario Bros U pipes

Unlike in Super Mario Maker, pipes in the New Super Mario Bros. U style are shinier than they are in the source game. They somewhat resemble an early design of the pipes seen in pre-release footage of the source game.

Removed Text

Hmmm...
To do:
Check all languages.

The file that contains the descriptions of the Clear Conditions, Message\ReferenceMsg_*\GoalCondition.msbt, contains two used pieces of text for the Toad rescue Clear Conditions, labeled 01 ("Reach the goal with all [number] Toads in tow.") and 03 ("Reach the goal with [number] Toads in tow"), but none labeled 02. Judging from the numbering of similar sets of strings, 02 would have likely said: "Reach the goal with at least [number] Toads in tow."

(Source: Original TCRF research)

Internal Project Name

The game's codename is "Slope", according to strings in the executable. The first game's codename is "Block", for reference.

Regional Differences

Kamek

Similarly to the original game, the Magikoopa is called Kamek in European regions. This also applies to the Mii outfits.

Revisional Differences

Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Investigate and document the v1.0.1 update, which fixed unspecified issues. (Possible change: the player is no longer able to spin jump while holding an item in SMW.)
