Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World is the second installment of one of Nintendo's schemes to make us buy the same games over and over again. It's basically a port of Super Mario World with added voices, minor level changes, some additional cutscenes and worse music.

Graphics

There's no place like Yoshi's House!

Most of Super Mario Advance 2's graphics are marginally edited copies of Super Mario World's and as a result, it keeps most of the original's unused tiles.

The port actually found a use for some of the tiles it inherited. After finding all 96 exits, a cutscene plays where we finally see the birds from Yoshi's House fly. Their flying tiles exist in Super Mario World, but were never used.

Version Differences

SMA2 Title Screen

Japan International
Behold this happy, expressive and colorful representation of our wonderful game! Behold this text. Yep.

The main title screen was completely redone for the international releases. Those of us not living in Japan got completely ripped off by comparison.

Game Select Screen

Japan International
Remind me why these are in English to begin with. Do you want to play the new game you just paid for or the old game you already paid for last year?

The Japanese version used a remake of the original Japanese logo while the rest of the world used a shrunk down version of the international one.

SMW Title Screen

Japan International
Now with and sumo trademarks and oversaturated greens! Is it bad when the non-obscured screen area for a *demo* is only a handful of scanlines tall?

Interestingly enough, even though they went through the trouble of remaking the original Japanese logo for the game select screen, they use the international version on the Japanese title screen, due to the original wouldn't fit in.

Song Differences

All Exits Cutscene Song

The All Exits Cutscene Song between Japan and International version had a little change when the game congratulates you for finding them all.
