In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, EVERYONE AND (almost) EVERYWHERE IS HERE!
Contents
Unused Series Names
Devil's Third Jet Force Gemini Blast Corps
Devil's Third, Jet Force Gemini, and Blast Corps are listed along other series in the game's strings. However, no form of content from any of these series appear in the game at all.
Nexon now owns the rights to Devil's Third and released Devil's Third Online for Windows, as a result causing Nintendo to shut down the servers for the Wii U version. Blast Corps and Jet Force Gemini are both Rare-developed Nintendo 64 titles, but the company and rights to all its original IPs are now owned by Microsoft.
Unused Models
DK
barrelconga
Donkey Kong's bongo drums! While they were used for DK's Konga Beat Final Smash in Brawl and Smash 4, in Ultimate Donkey Kong received a new Final Smash based off of Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. The bongos still live on in two-dimensional form through the "Donkey Kong & Bongos" Spirit.
Interestingly, the bongo drums have had their textures upgraded since the Wii U installment, despite not being used at all.
Link
A model of the fairy which appeared in the previous game when Link used his side taunt, completely unchanged from its appearance there. Link boasts a different, fairy-free side taunt in this game, and is consequently the only Link to not be accompanied by a fairy.
Unused Sounds
vc_narration_characall_mii
This clip was used in the last game when selecting or winning with a Mii Fighter, though the previously unused Mii Brawler, Mii Swordfighter, and Mii Gunner are now used instead.
Filename Oddities
item_harisen_m
A battering sound which normally is used when Jigglypuff connects with its Pound special move, but the filename of which references the recurring Fan item (known as "Harisen" in Japanese). However, the Fan is not present in the game at all, indicating it was once possibly considered to be included following its absence in the previous game but was removed for unknown reasons. Notably, this sound effect is different from the sound used by the Fan in previous games.
Charizard Victory Theme
Charizard has his own victory theme in z59_f_lizardon like in 3DS/Wii U, but since he's with Pokemon Trainer like Brawl, it goes unused. It is the same as all the other Pokemon series victory theme however, so it could be an early development leftover before Charizard was added to Pokemon Trainer.
Home-Run Contest Leftovers
The mode Home-Run Contest, which appeared in every Smash game since Melee, is mentioned several times in the game’s code. Contrary to several rumors online, little to no viewable stage data for the mode can be found in the game’s files or stage folder, the same being true for Stage Builder. This previously mentioned code could be leftovers from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, the latest game in the series which features both the Home-Run Contest and Stage Builder, as it was stated by Nintendo that although Ultimate and it’s mechanics were built from the ground up, things like sounds and models were taken from the Wii U game. This means that they could have wanted the modes to return for the next game, but it was ditched sometime during development.
The music tracks used for these, as well as any other missing modes (such as Coin Launcher or Trophy Rush), can be played in Ultimate’s sound test player.
Unused Character-Related Data
| To do: Compare Piranha Plant's early parameters to its final parameters in version 2.0.0, it used to be lighter and slower. |
Boss Giga Bowser
The version of Giga Bowser used for its boss fight is unlike any other boss in the game, as it internally is classified as a fighter and he has placeholder data of camera content, a Kirby copy ability, a Final Smash, a result screen, and even alternate costumes! This seems to be a leftover from when it originally appeared as Bowser's Final Smash in Brawl and 4.
By hacking Giga Bowser into the match as a fighter, he appears to work with a full-on moveset and can be knocked back like in Melee, but winning as him outside of a team battle goes to the result screen briefly and crashes the game because the announcer call for Giga Bowser is missing.
Placeholder Character Parameter Entries
Present in the fighter_param directory are two entries pertaining to playable characters who are not otherwise present in the game:
fighter_kind_jack fighter_kind_brave
It is unknown who jack and brave refer to. An entry corresponding to Piranha Plant, with a very different set of parameters compared to those on the character upon release, also existed in the retail version of the game, labelled fighter_kind_packun.
Of note, the parameter files for brave were added alongside the v1.1.0 update, whereas the parameters for Piranha Plant and jack were present in the game's initial release. Curiously, the entries for both jack and brave were removed as of the 2.0.0 update.
Placeholder Fighter Slots
A whopping 30 placeholder character slots exist in the files of the character selection screen, even though there are only six known DLC fighters (Piranha Plant, Joker from Persona 5, and four that have been announced as coming but not yet revealed).
It is unknown if the game will receive 24 more DLC fighters after the six currently-announced ones, but it's more likely that these slots were meant for future-proofing.
Ditto Final Smash, Entrance, and Victory Pose model leftovers
Ditto material data exists for Final Smashes, Victory Pose models, and entrances, but Ditto cannot do any of those. Even if Ditto breaks a Smash Ball, it'll be given to the player who had summoned Ditto.
Unused Animations
To do:
|
Palutena
Win1a, Win1aWait, Win1b, Win1bWait, Win2b, and Win2bWait are supposed to be Palutena's variations of her default winning animations.
Bayonetta
Win2b, Win2bWait, Win3b, and Win3bWait, are all leftovers from the previous title along with the new Win2a, Win2aWait, Win3a, and Win3aWait files.
Internal Project Name
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is referred to internally as "Cross2", as a continuation of the previous game's internal name "Cross".
Build Dates
2018/09/30 20:53:29 2018/10/06 23:41:27
The earlier date appears in most audio files, while the later date suggests that there were one or more revisions with several audio files and/or new audio files added.

- Due to the archaistic depiction of Native Americans, the original artwork representing the 1982 Game & Watch title Fire Attack was altered to remove the outline of a feather from Mr. Game & Watch's appearance. This change is also carried over to Mr. Game & Watch's character model as his forward smash attack is based off of it as well. The modified appearance is consistent with the version of Fire Attack that was included in the US release of Game & Watch Gallery 4.
Version 1.2.0
Released on December 14, 2018, with the following changes:
- The difficulty of approaching challengers was adjusted to make them slightly easier.
- In online, the Quickplay Format setting of every player's Preferred Rules was prioritized more.
- Increased the stability of the synchronous connection within Battle Arenas.
- Game balance adjustments and bug fixes, some of which can be viewed here:

- Players can no longer damage teammates in the online practice arena.
- Various game balance adjustments - the full list of which can be seen here:

- Fixed an issue where the Masked Man Spirit used a fan-made sprite as opposed to official material - the fan-made sprite was created by WarpstarX.
- Fixed a glitch where Primary & Support Spirits would apply their strength multipliers twice when equipped by Olimar, causing any attack involving his Pikmin to have disproportionately high damage and knockback.
- Fixed the "Bucket Sliding" glitch, where Mr. Game & Watch could freely move around while using his Oil Panic special move under certain situations.
- Fixed a glitch where Samus and Dark Samus' Missile special move would stop tracking the Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon if they were switched out while the Missile was still active.
- Fixed a glitch where Yoshi's Egg Lay special move would launch foes at disproportionately long distances under certain circumstances.
- Fixed a glitch where the stylized border in Peach Blossom & Daisy Blossom would display incorrectly on scrolling stages.
- Fixed a glitch where Nana would occasionally "teleport" to the opposite side of the stage when hit.
- Fixed a glitch where Mr. Game & Watch's up aerial would incorrectly realign itself in the center of the stage if used on certain slanted surfaces.
- Fixed a glitch where Snake could ledge cancel his C4 special move, and thus be capable of attaching the explosive to himself.
- Fixed a glitch where Charizard's tongue would bizarrely stick out of its forehead when in its down aerial landing lag animation.
- Fixed a glitch where King Dedede's face would be permanently stuck on a shocked expression if he Inhaled both a player and an explosive item simultaneously.
- Fixed a glitch where R.O.B. could not be dash grabbed by certain characters while behind a shield.
- Fixed a glitch where Mii Gunner could "freeze" opponents in midair by KOing them with their Final Smash in a stamina match.

- Fixed a glitch where opponents sucked into King K. Rool's Blunderbuss would turn invisible in certain circumstances.
- Fixed a glitch where Isabelle would occasionally "teleport" when using her Fishing Rod special move as a tether recovery.
- Fixed a glitch where all of Shulk's Monado Arts would be active at once indefinitely if he was attacked by a cinematic Final Smash while selecting an Art.
- Fixed a glitch where the slowdown effect of Bayonetta's Witch Time special move could last indefinitely under specific circumstances.
- Fixed a series of glitches where items colliding with 2 of Isabelle's Fishing Rod special moves simultaneously would behave unusually - this most notably removes a glitch where Isabelle could infinitely summon Assist Trophies.
- Fixed a glitch where the game would crash if Yoshi ended a stamina match with his pummel, and then executed a throw immediately afterwards.
- Fixed a glitch where the game would crash if Villager and Isabelle continually Pocket their slingshot forward and back aerials.
- Fixed a glitch where the game would crash if Mii Swordfighter used Gale Stab right after Duck Hunt used Wild Gunman. This particular glitch also had the potential to corrupt one's save data.
Piranha Plant DLC
- Piranha Plant has been added as a playable fighter for those who claimed their Nintendo Gold points for the game before January 31st, 2019. Additional accommodations for Piranha Plant (Fighter Spirit, availability in World of Light, Classic path, inclusion in All-Star Smash, character-specific tips) are also included.
Regional Differences
| To do: Most regional differences were carried over from SSB4. Create a subpage for these, and include any new ones. |
R.O.B. uses his Famicom color as his default costume in the Japanese version. In all other versions, he uses his NES color as his default costume. If the language is changed to Japanese in all other versions however, he will use his Famicom color as his default color.
