The Game Boy version of Tetris is a very famous rendition and the system's pack-in game for American consumers. The game was so popular, it led to the Game Boy being a major success for Nintendo.

Version Differences

There were two versions released in Japan. Version 1.0 was part of a Special Link Bundle, and is estimated to have sold around 25,000 copies. Version 1.1, used for the rest of the print run and the version released internationally, contains the more widely-recognized A-TYPE music and is overall a slightly more polished game.

Copyright Screen

Version 1.0 has a much shorter copyright screen, lasting only three seconds. The copyright screen in Version 1.1 lasts for ten seconds, though pressing Start after six seconds will go to the title screen.

Music and Sounds

Version 1.0 has a very different A-TYPE song and level-up sound.

Version 1.0's A-TYPE song, known as Minuet.

Version 1.1's A-TYPE song, known as Korobeiniki.

Version 1.0's level-up sound.

Version 1.1's level-up jingle.

An unused level-up jingle found in Version 1.0, which you can activate (replacing the normal sound) by using the Game Genie code 084-F5D-E62 when leveling-up.

Level 9

Version 1.0 requires you to score 20 lines on Level 9 to proceed to Level 10. This was changed for Version 1.1 to 100 lines.

Block Rotation Glitch

In the Initial version, there is a glitch that lets you rotate a block while clearing a line, multiple lines, or a Tetris. The glitch can only happen if there is room in the playing field.
