As with the first game, this installment was later released outside of Europe in colorized form, but this time as a Game Boy Color exclusive. Since the second game of Infogrames' trilogy was not released outside Europe, the startup screen removed the numbered title in multiple languages and refers to it as "The Smurfs' Nightmare" in English.

Papa Smurf is also missing entirely from the password screen in the Game Boy Color release, but his sprite is still there. It's even been given minor touch ups.

However, as a result of that, some of the passwords have been changed around. Although the passwords do not typically feature duplicate Smurfs, the removal of Papa Smurf leaves one password using Hefty twice.

There are only two levels that use the same password - The Mysterious Planet 1 (Hard) and The Rabbit Race (Hard).

Level Game Boy Game Boy Color
The Rabbit Race (Easy) Brainy Smurf, Handy Smurf, Papa Smurf Brainy Smurf, Handy Smurf, Hefty Smurf
The Rabbit Race (Hard) Hefty Smurf, Brainy Smurf, Handy Smurf Hefty Smurf, Brainy Smurf, Handy Smurf
The Mysterious Planet 1 (Easy) Astro Smurf, Hefty Smurf, Brainy Smurf Astro Smurf, Papa Smurf, Brainy Smurf
The Mysterious Planet 1 (Hard) Hefty Smurf, Baker Smurf, Astro Smurf Hefty Smurf, Baker Smurf, Astro Smurf
The Workbench Gone Mad 1 (Easy) Papa Smurf, Baker Smurf, Handy Smurf Hefty Smurf, Baker Smurf, Handy Smurf
The Workbench Gone Mad 1 (Hard) Brainy Smurf, Hefty Smurf, Papa Smurf Brainy Smurf, Hefty Smurf, Hefty Smurf

Papa Smurf can still be added by changing the password icon value to 05, but using him will always cause the password to be invalid.

One other change was the dam at the end of the Village. In the original release, the dam was wider, which overlapped Hefty's sprite. One tile used for the end of the bush was pushed to the foreground, also causing it to overlap Hefty when he jumped. The dam was shortened in the Game Boy Color release, and the bush was extended and remained in the background.
