The August 5, 1999 prototype of Crash Team Racing is a late build of the game dated a month before the Review Copy build, and over a month before the final release version. Most of the game is complete, however there's still a lot of unimplemented stuff.
The game uses a dongle protection for special memory card data, therefore a patch is needed to play the game properly.
The differences shown here are consistent with the build used as preview in some American magazines, such as Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine and GamePro, suggesting they're the same build.
