40 Winks is an adventure game starring two kids and their wacky dreams. The N64 version, scheduled for release alongside the PlayStation one, was delayed and ultimately cancelled due to the latter performing poorly on the market.
A European prototype was acquired from eBay, then dumped and released by ASSEMblergames user "gorgyrip" on January 29, 2008. Essentially complete, the game was picked up by Piko Interactive and published following a successful Kickstarter campaign, making it the first commercially-released N64 title since 2002.
Cheats
A series of cheats that do not need a cheat device can be activated while inside the pause menu in-game with the following button inputs. You may need to be in the player's house in order to activate some of these cheats. These codes mirror the ones found in the PS1 version but do not require holding Select when entering them. Some codes appear to be unique to one system.
The N64 and PS1 controls map like so:
- D-Pad = D-Pad
- C-Up = L1
- C-Down = R1
- C-Left = L2
- C-Right = R2
- L = Square
- R = Circle
Where it works | N64 cheat code | PS1 equivalent | Effect |
---|---|---|---|
"PRESS START" screen | L, R, Up, R, Down | Square, Circle, Up, Circle, Down | N64 only. Displays the credits. NOTE: This must be done at the PRESS START screen before the main menu. |
Player's Home only | R, C-Up, C-Left, C-Up, C-Left | Circle, L1, L2, L1, L2 | Gives the player all Dream Keys (used to unlock bosses). |
Player's Home only | Left, Down, Right, Right, Right | Left, Down, Right, Right, Right | Gives the player all 40 Winks (main collectible). |
Levels & Worlds | Right, C-Up, Up, C-Down, C-Up | Right, L1, Up, R1, L1 | Sets the player's ZZZs to 50 (used for health). |

Levels & Worlds | Down, C-Right, C-Up, Up, C-Right | Down, R2, L1, Up, R2 | Sets the player's Cogs to 40 (used to unlock areas within levels). Note: Will reset to 0 upon entering/exiting an area. |
Levels & Worlds | C-Left, Right, C-Right, Down, L | L2, Right, R2, Down, Square | N64 only. Toggles Anamorphic Widescreen mode. Only takes effect in the N64 version, does not play a sound, and is not written to save file. |
Levels & Worlds | C-Right, R, C-Down, C-Up, R | R2, Circle, R1, L1, Circle | Sets the player's lives to 3. |
Levels & Worlds | C-Up, Up, Right, C-Left, Up | L1, Up, Right, L2, Up | PS1 only. Toggles Big Head mode. Only takes effect in the PS1 version, but plays a sound and is written to save file in both. |
Cheat Menu
Inside the pause menu is a normally-inaccessible debug option that contains a level select and a cinematic viewer, as well as an animation viewer that doesn't appear to work anymore. You can enable it with GameShark code 801D5355 0001.
Region Error Screen
This screen would show up if you tried to play the game on an NTSC N64.
You can apply the following GameShark code to see it upon boot:
