Bloons TD 6/Version Differences

From The Cutting Room Floor
Jump to navigation Jump to search
Hmmm...
To do:
  • Versions 11.1 through 24.1
  • Are there any known differences between version 1.0.1 (the version released to certain youtubers a few days before launch) and 1.3? If so, those would be worth documenting on a prerelease page.
This cactus is UNDER CONSTRUCTION
This article is a work in progress.
...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.

This is a sub-page of Bloons TD 6.

Version 1.3

The original release. Yes, really, the first version was 1.3.

Version 1.5

Released on 18 June 2018. This was the first version released in Hong Kong, as, bafflingly, the game somehow missed the release date in that region. Consists of stability improvements and several bug fixes, mostly pertaining to glitchy interactions between towers.

Version 1.6

Released on 21 June 2018, consisting of bug fixes (largely to Monkey Knowledge) and the removal of a few "regrow farming" exploits that were missed during playtesting.

Version 1.7

Released on 28 June 2018.

  • CHIMPS mode now rewards end-of-round cash like in most other modes.
  • The Banana Farmer can now collect crates from Monkeyopolis.
  • Replaying Daily Challenges no longer counts toward Daily Challenge-related achievements.
  • Load time improvements across the board, especially for the Powers menu.
  • Performance improvements.
  • Several bug fixes.

Version 1.8

Released on 29 June 2018. Fixes a single bug where the game would occasionally award the player with the wrong amount of Monkey Money for completing a game.

Version 2.0

Released on 23 July 2018. The first content update to the game.

  • The 5th Hero, Captain Churchill, was released. A preliminary icon and a full set of text data for Churchill have existed in the game since launch, both of which have been updated.
Launch 2.0+
The Sun God fights on the side with the best artillery! It's going to rain hard today!
  • Churchill's original icon shows a rather drastic change in his design: his helmet was originally green instead of brown, his goggles were all-black instead of brown with green lenses, the barrel on his tank's gun was green instead of gray, the antenna on his tank didn't have a cap, and both his hat and the side of the tank's turret body had banana-themed emblems on them. Additionally, Churchill himself lacked a scar and had beady brown eyes instead of green eyes.
    • In addition to Churchill's used textures, this update also added some early Churchill textures, which match this early icon much more closely than the final textures do.
Level Launch 2.0+

MOAB Barrage shells do massively increased damage per hit.
MOAB Barrage shells and Main Gun do massively increased damage per hit.
  • Churchill's MOAB Barrage upgrade at level 20 was buffed to also increase the damage of Churchill's main attack for the duration of the ability.
  • A new intermediate track has been introduced: Firing Range. The text for this track has existed since launch.
  • Patch notes are now able to be viewed in-game from the title screen. Previously, all patch notes were delivered exclusively via Reddit posts and on the developers' (now dead) forums.
  • A news/events menu has been added to the game.
  • Freeplay mode received unknown tweaks to make it "more interesting".
    • Fortified Purple Bloons no longer appear in Freeplay mode, rendering them unused.
  • Half Starting Cash mode has been changed to Half Cash mode, now halving all cash earned instead of just starting cash.
    • Due to the enormous jump in difficulty, Half Cash was also changed to be unlocked after Double HP MOABs instead of before.
  • All game modes now have their own medals. Before this, only Easy, Normal, Hard, and Impoppable had medals.
    • Tracks now display special borders if all medals are collected for them. A gold border is used if the player has the Ruby (red) CHIMPS medal, while a black border is used if the player has the Hematite (black) CHIMPS medal.
  • The Wizard Monkey's Soulbind upgrade, which was widely regarded as the single worst upgrade in the game by far, was outright replaced with a completely different upgrade: Prince of Darkness. The art for the upgrade is the same as the art for Soulbind, but instead of sacrificing towers, the tower acts as a much stronger version of the Necromancer.
  • Monkey Knowledge can now be toggled off via an option in the Monkey Knowledge menu.
  • Continues now scale in both their Monkey Money cost and amount of extra cash provided based on the round the player lost on, rather than costing a fixed amount of Monkey Money and providing a fixed amount of extra cash.
  • The cost of removing the statue on Rake was increased from $350 to $1000.
  • New animations were added for removing objects. Before this update, removable objects would simply poof out of existence when removed.
  • A few voice clips that Obyn was oddly missing (namely, the voice clips that play to warn of incoming MOAB-Class Bloons) were implemented.
Original Updated
Prepare for obliteration! I love the smell of bubble-wrap in the morning!
  • Striker Jones' icon was changed. The original icon was mistakenly using an earlier version of his artwork: the lighting was different, his cap had a slightly different emblem, and his fabulous mustache was smaller and didn't obscure his mouth.
  • Balance changes and a ton of bug fixes, which can be viewed here.

Version 2.1

Released on 30 July 2018, consisting of bug fixes (mostly related to Half Cash mode).

Version 3.0

Released on 23 August 2018.

  • The 6th Hero, Benjamin, was released. A preliminary icon and a full set of text data for Benjamin have existed in the game since launch, both of which have been updated.
Launch 3.0+
Rules are made to be broken! Let's see what we can do here.
  • Benjamin's original icon is slightly different: he was facing right instead of left, his hairstyle was different, and he had sunglasses in his level 1 form.
    • These differences closely match his appearance in concept art.

  • Benjamin's cash generation was nerfed for lower levels, though his cash generation upgrades at levels 15 and 17 remained unchanged at $600 and $800, respectively.
  • His upgrade to Bank Hack at level 9 was buffed significantly, making Monkey Banks even more overpowered.
  • The description for Syphon Funding at level 10 was changed to say "most" instead of "all", though it's not clear if this was a nerf or just a minor correction.
  • His level 18 upgrade was changed to allow Bloon Trojan to affect BFBs, but it's not known if Bloon Trojan was originally able to affect BFBs by default or not, making it unclear if this change is a buff or an accommodation to a Bloon Trojan nerf at lower levels.
  • A new advanced track has been introduced: High Finance. The text for this track has existed since launch.
  • A new Magic Monkey Knowledge upgrade has been introduced: There Can Be Only One. The text and icon for this upgrade have existed since launch.
  • Advanced Challenges have been introduced, along with Friday Stingers.
  • New options have been introduced for Daily Challenges: per-tower caps and total-tower caps.
  • Apopalypse mode now awards a medal at round 60 instead of 70.
  • An option was added to disable Hero voice clips.
  • Balance changes, minor quality-of-life changes, and bug fixes, which can be viewed here.

Version 4.0

Released on 12 September 2018.

  • A new intermediate track has been introduced: Downstream. The text for this track has existed since launch.
  • A new option has been introduced for Daily Challenges and Advanced Challenges: allowing the player to use their Hero of choice, rather than having a preset Hero or no Hero at all.
  • An option to respec Monkey Knowledge has been added, which costs 2000 Monkey Money.
  • The lives cap has been raised from 1000 to 5000, though towers that generate lives are 95% less efficient after reaching 1000 lives.
  • The Powers menu now has a tab to view the player's Insta-Monkey collection.
  • Balance changes and bug fixes, which can be viewed here.

Version 4.1

Released on 24 September 2018 exclusively for the iOS version. Adds support for the aspect ratios of the newly-released iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max.

Version 5.0

Released on 23 October 2018 as a Halloween-themed update.

  • A whopping three new tracks have been introduced:
    • Frozen Over (easy)
    • Haunted (intermediate)
    • Dark Castle (expert)
The text for all three of these tracks has existed since launch.
  • Two new Powers have been introduced: the Tech Bot and Energizing Totem.
  • Quincy has received the new Cyber Quincy skin.
  • The main menu and all tracks have been given a Halloween reskin.
  • A new holiday event-exclusive game mechanic has been introduced: collectibles will spawn on the track, which can be collected by the player, and after collecting at least 20, the player can activate a special ability that wipes out lots of Bloons.
    • In the case of Halloween, candies are the collectibles of choice, and the ability summons ghosts to run over the track.
  • The 5-5-5 True Sun God (Avatar of the Vengeful Monkey) and its mini-Sun Avatars have new portraits. Before this update, they had the same portraits as the regular True Sun God and the regular Sun Avatar, respectively.
  • A very large amount of assets pertaining to Co-op were added to the game files in this update, though Co-op would not be introduced until version 11.0. A preliminary icon for Co-op has existed since launch, which was changed:
Launch 5.0+
BTD6-OriginalCoopIcon.png BTD6-UpdatedCoopIcon.png
  • The original Co-op icon is very clearly a placeholder, consisting of a rough-looking render of two Dart Monkeys.
  • 13 new achievements, all relating to Co-op, have been introduced, though they would all go unused until version 11.0:
    • Co-operation: Beat 1 map in Co-op mode
    • Four times the fun: Beat 1 map in 4-player Co-op mode
    • Triple threat: Beat 1 map in 3-player Co-op mode
    • Collaborate!: Have 4 Heroes on screen at once
    • When the going gets tough...: Win 10 games on Hard difficulty in Co-op mode

    • Monkey Contributor: Give 100,000 Cash in Co-op mode
    • Monkey Philanthropist: Give 1,000,000 Cash in Co-op mode

    • Co-op Popper: Pop 10,000,000 Bloons in Co-op mode
  • A few balance changes and bug fixes, which can be viewed here.

Version 5.1

Released on 31 October 2018, consisting of bug fixes.

Version 6.0

Released on 18 November 2018.

  • The 6th Military Monkey, the Mortar Monkey, was released. A full set of text data for this Monkey has existed in the game since launch, which was updated.
Path Tier Launch 6.0+

Shattering shells strip all special bloon properties off all but the biggest bloons.
  • The description for Shattering Shells was changed to state that larger Bloons are unaffected, though it's not clear if this was a nerf or just added for clarity.
  • Two new tracks have been introduced:
    • Moon Landing (intermediate)
    • Quad (expert)
The text for both Moon Landing and Quad have existed since launch.
  • Three new Military Monkey Knowledge upgrades have been introduced:
    • Extra Burny Stuff
    • Budget Battery
    • Paint Stripper
The text and placeholder icons for all three of these Monkey Knowledge upgrades has existed since launch.
  • Gwendolin has received the new Scientist Gwendolin skin.
Launch 6.0+

  • The description for the Decorated Hero achievement has been changed to be more accurate.
  • The background music for Dark Castle has been changed from Sunset Samba to Tribes and Tribulations.
  • Balance changes and bug fixes, which can be viewed here.

Version 6.1

Released on 20 November 2018 exclusively for the iOS version. Fixes a frequent crash bug that only affected older devices, specifically those using an Apple A8 chip or earlier such as the iPhone 6, iPod Touch 6, and iPad Mini 3.

Version 7.0

Released on 12 December 2018 as a Christmas-themed update.

  • The 7th Hero, Ezili, was released. A preliminary icon and a full set of text data for Ezili have existed in the game since launch, both of which have been updated.
Launch 7.0+
Hahaha! What is your will? I have never been stronger!
  • Ezili's original icon shows a few significant design changes: the pattern on her forehead was different, her eyebrows were square-ish instead of circular, her eyelids had small notches above them, and her hairstyle was different. Additionally, in the original icon, she was facing to the left, while in the updated icon, she's facing to the right.
Level Launch 7.0+

MOAB Hex works faster and can destroy BAD Bloons.
  • Ezili's level 5 and level 8 upgrades were swapped.
  • Ezili's MOAB Hex upgrade at level 20 was nerfed to deal less damage over time, but was also changed to allow it to affect BADs. It's not known if MOAB Hex was originally able to affect BADs by default or not, making it unclear if this change is a buff or an accommodation to a MOAB Hex nerf at lower levels.
  • Two new tracks have been introduced:
    • Alpine Run (easy)
    • Peninsula (advanced)
The text for both Alpine Run and Peninsula have existed since launch.
  • Races have been introduced.
  • The game's app icon, main menu, and all tracks have been given a Christmas reskin.
  • The holiday event-exclusive game mechanic returned.
    • In the case of Christmas, presents are the collectibles of choice, and the ability summons a sleigh to run over the track.
    • Due to negative feedback, this event system never returned after this update. All future holiday events would use the Collection Event system introduced for Easter in version 10.0.
  • New options have been introduced for Advanced Challenges only: disabling selling, disabling Powers, and disabling Continues.
  • Balance changes and bug fixes, which can be viewed here.

Version 7.1

Released on 13 December 2018. This was the first version released for Windows. Fixes a single oversight where ultra-widescreen devices would display the menu for Powers during Races, which are supposed to disable the use of Powers.

Version 8.0

Released on 31 January 2019.

  • A new intermediate track has been introduced: KartsNDarts.
  • Captain Churchill has received the new Sentai Churchill skin.
  • Reverse mode now causes Bloons to spawn in reverse order for each round. For example, round 13 on Reverse mode will now spawn the Green Bloons before the Blue Bloons, rather than the other way around.
  • MOAB-Class Bloons now use 3D models (first used in Bloons Adventure Time TD) rather than 2D images.
    • This change also applies to the Zombie MOABs and Zombie BFBs summoned by the Prince of Darkness.
  • All abilities that generate cash, such as Supply Drop, now must undergo their full cooldown time after purchasing rather than only 1/3rd of the full cooldown time.
  • Balance changes and bug fixes, which can be viewed here.

Version 8.1

Released on 8 February 2019.

  • Several changes were made specifically to the Windows version:
    • Key bindings can now be customised.
    • New key bindings were added:
      • "Send Next Round (Races)" (Shift + Space by default)
      • "Activated Ability 1-12" (Number keys, -, and = by default)
      • "Send Test Bloon" (Ctrl + ~) by default) (Oddly, the key bindings screen refers to the Ghost Bloon as the "Test Bloon")
    • Some default key bindings were changed:
      • "Send Bloon" hotkeys for Sandbox mode were changed from Number keys, -, =, O, P, [, ], and \ to Ctrl + Number keys, Ctrl + O, Ctrl + P, Ctrl + [, Ctrl + ], and Ctrl + \.
      • The hotkeys for Powers were changed from Number keys, -, =, [, and ] to Shift + Number keys, Shift + -, Shift + =, Shift + [, and Shift + ].
    • All three "Upgrade Path" hotkeys (<, >, and ? by default, as well as Numpad 1-3) can now upgrade the selected Hero, rather than just the first hotkey.
    • The "Change Targeting" hotkey (Tab by default) now works with the Mortar Monkey.
    • The Esc key (which cannot be rebound) no longer returns the player to the main menu from the game over screen.
    • UI elements that displayed text on "tap and hold", such as the abilities on the Heroes menu, now display on "hover" in this version.
  • Bug fixes, which apply to all platforms.

Version 9.0

Released on 4 March 2019.

  • The 8th Hero, Pat Fusty, was released. A preliminary icon and a full set of text data for Ezili have existed in the game since launch, both of which have been updated. This was the last Hero found in the game at launch to be released.
Launch 9.0+
It's squashing time! To pop is to serve!
  • Pat Fusty's original icon doesn't show many design changes, although he was originally in a completely different pose.
    • In the original, his arm appears to be glowing orange, which doesn't occur in the final game, but can be seen in concept art, which shows that it would've occurred when using his Rallying Roar ability.
Level Launch 9.0+

Big Squeeze: Grabs a MOAB, BFB, DDT (if visible), or ZOMG and crushes it to bits over 5 seconds.
20
Big Squeeze can affect ZOMG and DDT Bloon types.
Big Squeeze can grab several big Bloons at once.
  • Pat Fusty's Big Squeeze upgrade was buffed significantly: it now works on ZOMGs and DDTs as soon as level 10 instead of only at level 20, and it can now grab multiple MOAB-Class Bloons at once at level 20.
  • A new advanced track has been introduced: Pat's Pond.
  • Striker Jones has received the new Biker Bones skin, a reference to a community meme.
  • The Challenge Editor was introduced, allowing players to create and share their own challenges, as well as submit them as candidates for Daily Challenges or Advanced Challenges.
  • Challenges now use fixed seeds for Apopalypse mode and Freeplay mode, which is generated based on the challenge's parameters.
  • Sandbox mode has two new tools: Reset Cooldowns and Reset Damage Counters.

BTD6-OriginalFortifiedBadIcon.png BTD6-UpdatedFortifiedBadIcon.png
  • The icons for MOAB-Class Bloons in Sandbox mode were redone. The original icons were likely placeholders that hadn't been accounted for until now, as they all reuse art from Bloons Monkey City (including the icon for the BAD, which was simply a recolour of the icon for Blastapopoulos).
  • The difficulty of Freeplay mode was increased slightly.
  • The lanes on Muddy Puddles now alternate with a different pattern: 1 > 2 > 3 > 4 > 3 > 2 > repeat instead of 1 > 2 > 3 > 4 > repeat. This change, combined with all the balance changes made over every update up until now, finally made completing this track on CHIMPS mode possible, albeit barely.
  • The damage counters and cash counters on towers now use 64-bit integers rather than 32-bit integers, fixing an issue where damage counters would overflow into the negatives when going into Freeplay mode. However, bafflingly, the developers are still using signed integers instead of unsigned integers for these counters for some reason.
  • For the Windows version, "multi-placement" now requires holding down the tower's hotkey instead of Shift.
  • Balance changes and bug fixes, which can be viewed here.

Version 10.0

Released on 11 April 2019 as an Easter-themed update. The iOS version didn't receive the update until the day after due to issues with Apple's notoriously sluggish update approval process.

  • A new intermediate track has been introduced: Spring Spring.
  • Obyn Greenfoot has received the new Ocean Guardian Obyn skin.
  • The main menu and all tracks have been given an Easter reskin.
  • A new holiday event has been introduced: the Collection Event, replacing the event system previously seen in versions 5.0 and 7.0. Completing tracks will award the player a number of collectible items based on the track difficulty and mode, and the player will be rewarded with random Insta-Monkeys for collecting enough each time.
    • In the case of Easter, eggs are the collectibles of choice.
  • The option to toggle Double Cash (if purchased) has been moved to a new "extras" menu within the options page.
  • One new achievement has been introduced:
    • Big Bloons: Pat likes hugging Big Bloons even more (hidden, requires winning 10 games using Pat Fusty)
  • **Big Bloons** mode has been introduced, unlocked as a reward for completing the aforementioned new achievement.
  • Striker Jones' Artillery Command ability has a new animation.
  • The Challenge Editor now allows the player to increase the health of Ceramic Bloons up to 2000% instead of only 1000%.
  • Balance changes and bug fixes, which can be viewed here.

Version 10.1

Released on 16 April 2019, consisting of bug fixes.

Version 11.0

Hmmm...
To do:
  • Add a comparison between the early park path (which is a slightly modified version of its appearance in btd5) and the final park path
  • Some tracks were altered in this update to better fit co-op, such as end of the road

Released on 3 July 2019 as a (belated) anniversary update.

  • Co-op mode has been introduced.
    • All unused assets, text, and achievements for Co-op that have existed in the game's data since version 5.0 are now used.
  • Two new tracks have been introduced:
The text for Park Path has existed since launch.
  • Benjamin has received the new DJ Benjammin' skin.
  • The game's app icon was updated to have two monkeys on it instead of one, reflecting the addition of Co-op.
  • The main menu and all tracks have been given an American Independence Day/Bastille Day reskin.
  • The Collection Event returned.
    • In the case of American Independence Day, fireworks are the collectibles of choice.
  • Sending rounds in Races now adds them to a queue, rather than each round being sent immediately. Each round is sent with a delay of 0.2 seconds.
  • The difficulty of Freeplay mode was increased significantly.
  • New options have been introduced for Challenges: All Camo and All Regrow.
  • Daily Chest rewards were improved slightly.
  • The option to disable line of sight was removed.
  • The game's controls and input system were substantially reworked:
    • Tower placement is more precise.
    • Mortar Monkeys and Heli Pilots now have default targetting positions; the former is dependent on the track, while the latter only applies to Patrol mode and sets them to two points in the middle of the track.
    • "Half-touch" mode was added: tapping/clicking and holding on the selected tower will hide the upgrade panel while still showing their range, line of sight, and any target markers.
    • When playing on a touchscreen, towers are less prone to "move slightly" when letting go after dragging.
    • On the Windows version only, pressing Enter on certain menus, such as tutorial prompts, will act the same as clicking the on-screen button that progresses to the next menu.
    • On the Windows version only, hotkeys can now be used in Drag & Drop mode. Previously, they could only be used in Click & Drop mode for unknown reasons.
  • Balance changes, bug fixes, and performance improvements, which can be viewed here.
