Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (Windows)/Regional Differences

Modern Warfare features many of the same type of regional changes that have been seen in previous Call of Duty releases, only this time with the introduction of region-exclusive cosmetic items.

Multiple Versions

• None of the English text on calling cards appears to have been translated in any language versions.
• In the Russian and Japanese versions of the Campaign, when a teammate is hovered over their rank and callsign is in English instead of the game's language.
• The name of the Akimbo weapon perk was not translated in the French and German version, which obscured its name.
• The R9-0 Shotgun is just called R9-0 in the Russian and German versions.
• The RAAL MG's name was rendered differently in some language versions.
  • In the German version it is called LAHS MG.
  • In the Spanish version, it is just called "RAAL".
• The FiNN MG is called "Mitrailleuse Finn" (Finn Machine Gun) in the French version.
• The battery sticker on the Riot Shield was not translated in the Japanese version.

Region-Specific Items

Several items could only be obtained in certain countries due to being tied to region-specific events or promotions.

• A 3 hour Double XP token could be obtained for a limited time by buying Modern Warfare from the British video game store GAME. A Double XP token with this specific time limit was not normally obtainable.
• A promotion with Burger King was done in the US and Germany to offer the following items with purchases of Burger King meals via Grubhub (US)/Burger King delivery (Germany). In the US, the code "BKCALLOFDUTY" had to be entered at checkout to get the items.
  • 1st order: Burger Town emblem
  • 2nd order: Burger Town calling card
  • 3rd order: Burger Town Bubby weapon charm
• The following content was only available through a promotion in North America with Totino's where specially marked Totino's products would contain codes that could be redeemed for in-game items.
  • Always a Party Calling Card - Unlocked through redeeming one code.
  • Dinner Time watch - Unlocked through redeeming two codes.
  • Diamond Jim weapon charm - Unlocked through redeeming three codes.
• The following Call of Duty League items were only obtainable in North America (except Quebec), most of South America, some of Europe, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand.
  • Emblems, Sprays, and Calling Cards for the following teams:

Sniper Rifle Scope Charm

A sniper rifle scope charm could be obtained through purchase of the SCUF Vantage 2 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare controller off of SCUF's website. This controller could be purchased in the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Italy, other parts of Europe, and other English-speaking parts of the world. This controller could not be purchased in other parts of Europe and the world that did not speak English due to SCUF's European website and international site only being in English. Also, while it shipped worldwide, it did not ship to Brazil.

Italian Version

• The buttons around the JOKR's HUD when in ADS were not translated.

German Version

• The 25 Round Magazine erroneously says it has 24 rounds.
• The PP-Skelet attachment for the Sykov is called PP-Skelett (with an extra "t"). This change is unusual given that "Skelet" is a romanization of the Russian word Скелет Skelet (skeleton).
• The Origin 12 Shotgun is just called Origin 12.
• During Season 2 the IAV challenge, which tasks players with getting 50 Infantry Assault Vehicle kills, erroneously said in the German version to get 50 Grenade kills.

Russian Version

To do: Document the troubled PlayStation 4 release of the game.

• FN Scar 17 is called FN SCAR 17.
• The AS VAL is called АС "Вал" AS "Val". This difference in capitalization stems from the fact that the weapon's Russian name means "AS 'Shaft'", with Вал Val being the Russian word for "shaft".
• The Uzi was called UZI in the Russian versions of Black Ops 1 and 2. In this game, its name was rendered in Cyrillic as "Узи" "Uzi".
• The Model 680 is called Модель-680 Model-680.
• The "FiNN" in FiNN LMG has a lowercase "i". This is absent in the Russian version on the name, which renders FiNN as ФИНН FINN.
• Since Modern Warfare 3, subsequent Russian games alternated between referring to the Dragunov as СВД SVD and Драгунов Dragunov. In this game, it was referred to as "Dragunov".
• Damascus Camouflage was accidentally named after the city of Damascus in Syria instead of the steel. While both the city and the steel have the same name in English, in Russian their names are slightly different, with the steel's Russian name being the same as the English name but the city being called Дамаск Damask. This mistranslation possibly stems from the translator not being made aware that the camouflage is named after a type of steel.
• During the opening cutscene of the Fog of War level, the recording of The Wolf does not match up perfectly with his mouth movements on-screen. Specifically, the Russian audio pauses when the character is still talking and the character makes wide mouth movements when the words spoken in the Russian audio do not involve mouth movements like these.

Japanese Version

• At the start of "Piccadilly", Sgt. Crowley is called Sabre 2-6 in the subtitles.
• Weapon blueprint names were not translated, which obscured many of them.
• The "new" notification for a weapon class has a graphical glitch where it will partially cover over the name of that weapon class. Specifically, it will slightly cover over part of a kana character.
