With major public restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic finally easing up and the second cancellation of E3, 2022 starts off a bit slow in terms of video games aside from Amazon Luna, their response to the Google Stadia. It would be until Spring rolls around when a few good titles such as Elden Ring, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga are released to critical acclaim. This year also features a trio of threequels in Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Splatoon 3, and Bayonetta 3. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe makes a surprise comeback with the Booster Course Pass DLC, adding a whopping 48 courses to the already course-loaded game, essentially doubling the content. FIFA ends its 30-year deal with EA coming out with FIFA 23...but would be succeeded by FC series of games in the following year.

Valve also throws its hat into the handheld-gaming ring with the Steam Deck, which is released to generally positive reception. Overwatch controversially ends online services in that year, forcing players to play the free-to-play sequel instead.
