Stuffed inbetween some data at 0x50B0 is what appears to be a SRAM check, using Maruko's name.

P.MARUKO

The game checks for this string at bootup, specifically the P. section　as it serves double-duty as code. If this is modified using a hex editor, the game refuses to boot up. MARUKO is loaded at the beginning of the Cart RAM: modifying this section doesn't seem to produce anything different.
