Unused Graphics

The amount of unused graphics vary from each version of the game. Some are shared throughout all three, while others are exclusive to their respective platforms.

BOOT

  • DATA/BOOT directory had some unused graphics.
  • splash.dds in Windows version is an unused loading screen. The Windows demo contains another version of this file, which is actually used.

  • The PlayStation 2 build has a file named COPY.TM2 in the BOOT folder, which is a very small copy of the copyright screen.

  • In the Xbox/Windows version, the BOOT directory contains an additional folder with older versions of copyright screens in each localisation directory (Bak or Old sub-folder). The PC version of this screen is also missing the Bink Video logo.
  • From Xbox version

  • In the Xbox/Windows version there is a raw Photoshop document of the copyright screen in Temp.psd in each localisation folder.

CARS

Hmmm...
To do:
Add textures from that folder
  • The European PlayStation 2 version contains TEXTURES subdirectory with some unused textures.

DEV

  • DATA/DEV directory contains some icons (they are same in every game version). Their purpose are unknown, probably some debug leftovers. Those files created in November of 2000. Some of them also exists in European Xbox demo of Colin McRae Rally 04.

HORIZONS

  • DATA/HORIZONS/CLOUDS directory contains broken (if compared to other) CLOUDS3 and CLOUDS4 textures in each version.
  • The PlayStation 2 and PC versions contains leftovers from a demo in the DATA/INFO directory.
  • From European PlayStation 2 version (US version utilizes same graphics, but without release date text).
  • From PC version.

OSD

  • DATA/OSD directory contains unused texture GRIST which is Colin McRae's co-driver with Nicky Grist's face.
  • Also exists OSD_DIAL which is earlier speedometer texture.

  • Unused GREAT.TIF and SUPER.TIF (only in PlayStation 2 version). It also had README.TXT with next information:
File(s) to be removed:

grchlt.tm2 - JML, 01-11-2001.

TEMP

  • PlayStation 2/Xbox releases contains TEMP, which is different on each platform. In the PlayStation 2 releases this folder contains less files (US version also added GRASS subdirectory), and Xbox counterpart has a lot more files (which are mostly Colin McRae Rally 2 leftovers).
  • Contents from both versions:
  • MEMCARDS subdirectory with some crudely drawed placeholder textures
  • Also in PlayStation 2 version was left README.TXT with some information:

Texture used by the Memcard FrontEnd have been moved here,
to comply with the PS2 filesystem limitations.

Look for "select.xxx" and "back.xxx" in the code.

Fred 01/03/02
  • Contents from PlayStation 2 version.
  • MESH.TM2 too crudely performed.
  • From FENCE subdirectory:
  • From GRASS subdirectory:
  • Conatins weird grass texture RUSSIAN4.TM2 with swizzled text.
  • From LOADER subdirectory:
  • From POLETAPE subdirectory:
  • From TELEPOLE subdirectory:

  • Contents from Xbox version:
  • Lots of CMR2 leftovers: trees, people, environment textures and so on.
  • Textures of Subaru Impreza 44 with Spike livery, which wasn't used in PC version of CMR2.
  • refmap2.dds is default reflection texture from DirectX SDK.
  • earthbump.dds is affdbodf.dds from foca1.bfl, which contains Ford Focus WRC textures in CMR2.
  • mesh.dds too crudely performed.

TEXTURES

  • TEXTURES directory contains some unused images
  • From Kickup subdirectory

ColinMcRaeRally3 glass.png

The Xbox version has a file named glass.dds, a crude texture reading "SPAM".

PROFKEY.HTM

ColinMcRaeRally3 PROFKEY.png

OUTPUT/PROFKEY.HTM in the European PlayStation 2 version is an HTML file explaining the color key for a graphics performance profiler of some kind. It is unknown if the actual profiling functionality is still left in the game itself.

Platform Differences

  • The European PS2 and all Xbox versions have native widescreen support, but the PC version doesn't (except unpatched demo).
  • The US version on PlayStation 2 runs at 511x416 resolution, while the European version runs at 511x511. The US version also lacks widescreen support, and has minor trackside details cut down to maintain the higher 60Hz framerate.
