Deadly Premonition 2 acts as both a sequel and prequel to the first game:

• The main part of the game takes place in 2005, four years prior to the events in Greenvale, as FBI Special Agent Francis York Morgan investigates the murder of Lise Clarkson in the town of Le Carré, Louisiana.
• The framing story is set in 2019 and follows FBI Agent Aaliyah Davis' investigation into the handling of the Le Carré case.
