A debug menu can be accessed in the English versions by using the code 03000891:0C at the main menu, then selecting the invisible option. This will bring you to a mode that very much resembles story mode; after selecting your character, you will be shown the first cutscene of that character's story mode. The game will seem to lock up after this, though if you press the Start button, the debug menu will appear.
