Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones/Unused Text

From The Cutting Room Floor
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This is a sub-page of Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones.

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones features plenty of unused text, be it leftover from Fire Emblem or simple debug text.

Unused Preparations Menu Text

The text used in Fire Emblem's tactics rank, as well as the Augury, still remains in The Sacred Stones and is located with other text related to the preparations menu. There is also a text string for yet another removed debug function, presumably in this instance it would relate to the preparations menu.

Fire Emblem Data Transfer Text

Leftover text from Fire Emblem's data transfer and the Mario Kart: Double Dash!! bonus disc transfer remains in the final game:

Chapter Labels

There exist text strings after the main story chapter names and before the Lagdou Ruins floor labels for a ninth and tenth floor of the Tower of Valni. In the final release, the Tower of Valni only has eight floors.

Narration

There is an abandoned opening narration passage for Eirika's version of Chapter 15. In the final game, narration scenes only play when accessing chapters from the world map, so any chapter which immediately continues on from another without returning to the world map (i.e. like Eirika's Chapter 15) gets no narration at all. This is the only chapter of this type to have unused narration like this. Although the passage was translated for the English version, it is noticeably slightly off and unpolished compared to the rest of the game's English script (e.g. describing Jehanna Hall as having "capitulated" rather than having been conquered, as it actually was), suggesting that the passage was understandably left untouched after an early translation pass.

who rode to Jehanna's aid, have been routed

On their own again, Eirika and company flee
into the desert.▼
Without mercy, Generals Valter and Caellach

Eirika is soon brought to ground.
Enemy forces close in on all sides.▼

Character Names

A few unused names for characters which never made it into the final game.

  • Nate (ネイト), which appears with the other playable character names (specifically between the characters Dozla and Rennac). Nate did have unit data in the prototype, but it was removed from the final release, leaving a curious empty slot in the playable characters.
  • Deni (デミ), which appears between Caellach and Riev, two significant story bosses. While it is unused, this character's name was changed slightly in the English localization, going from "Demi" in the Japanese version to "Deni".
  • Mark (マーク), the default name of the previous game's tactician character.
  • Evil (イビル), the placeholder name for all the bosses in the prototype and some pre-release images, but not anywhere in the final release.
  • Summon (サモン), which was used by a unit that appeared in the prototype.
  • Summonern (サマナーン), a variant of the above-mentioned unit, which also appeared in the prototype.

Promotion Screen Class Names

Fire Emblem - The Sacred Stones promotion screen.png

In the Japanese version the game uses English renderings of class names decoratively in places, most obviously in the class demo reel. Interestingly, the set of names used for the labels on the promotion screen are not the same as the ones used in the demo reel, and appear to reflect changes made earlier in development in some cases. All instances of this are of classes that do not normally have access to the promotion screen due to either never being promoted into or being enemy-only.

Promotion Screen (Unused) Opening Demo Reel Other Gameplay Notes
Mountainthief Thief
(Thief)
"Mountainthief" is used to refer to the class localized as "Brigand" in the opening class reel.
Hellskeleton Hellbone
(Hellbone)
Hellskeleton was the class's name in the prototype.
Bael Elderbael
(Elder Bael)
The lack of a unique name for the promoted variant may be related to its absence from the prototype.
Bigl Archbigl
(Arch Bigl)
Known as the Mogall/Arch Mogall in the English localization. The lack of a unique name for the promoted variant may be related to its absence from the prototype.
Fodeth N/A 魔王
(Demon King)
Fodeth is the name of the sole character with the Demon King class in the Japanese version, he's named Fomortiis in the localization.

Help Text

Help text for the status buffs for the dummied out dancer rings still exist in the Japanese release and English release. The lines themselves are mostly unchanged from Fire Emblem. A chunk of the English description for the Thor's Ire effect seems to have been oddly overwritten; it should read "Critical hit % is increased, thanks to Thor's Ire", as it did in Fire Emblem.

Attack power is increased,
thanks to Filla's Might.

Japanese English
Select a character to bless.

Scrolling help caption when setting a mine or light rune. There are two identical copies of it, one for each item.

Japanese English
Select an area to trap.

Several characters who appear in story cutscenes but never become playable have unused help descriptions:

Character Japanese English
Klimt
A member of Carcino's Council of
Elders and an opponent of Grado.
Dara
An old woman of Caer Pelyn. Over 100
years in age, she is a font of wisdom.
Messenger
A pegasus knight of Frelia. She
serves as their message bearer.

There are a handful of unused class help descriptions: three for unused classes, and one for the used gorgon egg class. Since all enemy gorgon eggs are set to disallow viewing their stat screens, there is no way to ever see their help description in legitimate gameplay. All three of the unused class descriptions, meanwhile, are leftovers from Fire Emblem with no changes in the Japanese version. The English version re-translated all three from scratch. Bards still exist, unused, as class ID 0x46, and this help text plays accordingly there. Nomads and nomadic troopers have no other surviving data aside from leftover class portraits.

Character Japanese English
Nomad
Mounted plainsmen with good
movement. Armed with bows.
Nomadic Trooper
An honorific given to nomads of
great skill. Equip: Bows, swords.
Bard
Musicians whose melodies aid
allies. Unable to attack.
Eggs of lovely and deadly gorgons.

There is also a placeholder help description for temporary bosses appearing in the prototype and some early pre-release materials. Unlike the above help descriptions, this help description does not have any assigned character slot, and only exists as stand-alone text. It is between the rest of the character help descriptions and before class names.

Temp.: Enemy Boss[.][X]

Data Transfer Leftovers

Although the Fuuin no Tsurugi data transfer feature from the Japanese version of Fire Emblem didn't return for The Sacred Stones, its sets of text strings are still in the game, mostly untouched. This time, however, none of this was left in any foreign versions.

Chapters

Oddly enough, two chapter title entries (for the Mulagir and Maltet chapters in Fuuin no Tsurugi) were blanked in The Sacred Stones, even though all the others were left alone. This leaves two empty text entries between the Aureola ("The Supreme Light") and Apocalypse ("The Elder Revelation") listings.

Leftover Dummy Prototype Text

This test line from the prototype is present in the Japanese version of the final game's text, and is one of the first lines of text. "FE3" probably refers to the fact that The Sacred Stones is the third Fire Emblem game developed for the Game Boy Advance.

Debug Menu Text

There exist two sets of text strings which may be leftovers from removed debug functions, since some of them line up with ones found in the game's prototype. The first set occurs very early in the data, while the second is located later on between the movement commands and their help descriptions. Some lines reference characters from the previous two GBA Fire Emblem games, since The Sacred Stones was built upon them.

Prototype Chapter Select Text

The chapter select list text from the prototype's debug chapter select is also still present in the game at 001C32C7. It is different from the chapter select in the known prototype, as some chapters were added since the known prototype revision.

Unit Label List

Right before the Fire Emblem: Fuuin no Tsurugi credits is some sort of unit list which also seems to label some units by their class. Starting at 0x1C1EC0 in the US release:

It seems to be a designation for many units in the game, including playable characters, bosses, and bonus characters. Garcia and Neimi are still listed by their names from the prototype, "Borba" and "Mary" respectively; and Eirika and Ephraim are also still listed by the names given to them in the prototype's chapter select option, "Eirikr" and "Irzark" respectively. All other names here are consistent with the romanized names used in Japanese promotional materials (for characters) and the game's class roll (for classes).

Bosses and NPCs that appear in multiple chapters sometimes have the chapter number after their name, while the versions of bosses given as rewards in the Creature Campaign post-game mode all have the suffix _C. For example, WALTER_L00 is probably the Valter that shows up for the cutscene in the prologue, as L00 is the number to load the prologue in the prototype's debug chapter select, WALTER is probably the actual boss Valter from chapter 15, and WALTER_C is his Creature Campaign self.

Mine Recovery

The assassin class's obscure ability to harmlessly recover planted mines and add them to their inventory from Fire Emblem still exists in The Sacred Stones, but since mines are unused it's never seen in action. The text string for this ability triggering (completely unchanged from Fire Emblem, though the English version remembered to properly punctuate it this time) thus goes unseen.
