Game & Watch Gallery 4 is the fourth and final Game & Watch Gallery game. It took almost 14 years to come out in Japan, for some reason.

Unused Graphics
The Boxing and Donkey Kong 3 logos at a slightly larger size.
A heart, found within the tiles for Boxing. It was probably originally used for the health meter.
Within the tiles for Mario's Cement Factory is an early graphic of Mario standing, which resembles his standing pose from Super Mario World.
A graphic of Luigi's head within the tiles of Mario Bros. Normally, no matter who loses, it displays Mario's head.
Within the tiles of Donkey Kong are some early graphics of Mario facing the player, left, and right.
Luigi blinking found within the Gallery Corner tiles.
A tiny version of the octopus from Octopus.
Smaller sprites of Donkey Kong from Donkey Kong 3.
Smaller sprites of Wario from Fire Attack.
Waluigi's mugshot from Boxing with a twinkling eye.

Donkey Kong Junior's jumping sprite from Donkey Kong Jr. with his eyes looking upward instead of forward.

Donkey Kong from Donkey Kong with slightly different facial expressions and coloring.
Larger graphics of Toad from Mario's Cement Factory.
"GBG", found within the Game Select background graphics. It stands for "Game Boy Gallery". It can be seen in prerelease images of the main menu.
A poorly done paint job on the Message Board, done with a completely flat red.
Various leftover copyrights from previous games of the series and from early versions. These copyrights are loaded into the game selection menu, oddly enough.
The above graphics are loaded into the Gallery Corner in the English releases, and are Japanese names for the various locations. The Japanese Virtual Console release uses outlined text for this purpose instead.
These graphics are also loaded into the Gallery Corner. Likely notes for the light from the inside of the Museum shining on Mario and Luigi, as they are located above those sprites in memory.
A "Transmission Error" sign in Japanese. Technically used in the Japanese Virtual Console release, but unseen due to link cable functionality being removed. Multiplayer data is remained and can be checked via emulator.
Error Message
An error screen shows up when the game cannot find the name of the currently highlighted game in the Museum, and can easily be seen by using codes to force the game to scroll past Zelda. Note that this screen is not static and scrolls horizontally.
Compile Message
Starting at CAB7C in the ROM (CC810 in the Japanese version) is a string that reveals the compilation date.
US Version | European Version | Japanese Version |
---|---|---|
Compile Date: Jul 31 2002 Compile Time: 20:25:28 Jul 31 2002 20:25:28 |
Compile Date: Aug 1 2002 Compile Time: 13:06:32 Aug 1 2002 13:06:32 |
Compile Date: Dec 24 2002 Compile Time: 12:09:09 Dec 24 2002 12:09:09 |
Coupled with the later copyright date, it could be determined that Game & Watch Gallery 4's planned Japanese release was sometime in early 2003.

Save Data Version Number
The ROM contains two copies of a version number. The first one is used in the save data except for the last number (the 2). It is unknown if the version number is for the save format or the game. The text is the same for all releases of the game.

Regional Differences
US | Europe | Japan |
---|---|---|
In Europe, the game is called Game & Watch Gallery Advance. (Strangely enough, it's still called Game & Watch Gallery in Australia, even though the series was known as Game Boy Gallery there up to this point.) The trademark has also been moved to the Game & Watch part, whereas the Japanese version has no trademark. The background color of the copyright info at the bottom has been changed to be more consistent in the Japanese version.
Japan | International |
---|---|
The Japanese version has a message background consisting of a tiled sprite of Yoshi and an egg. The international versions also include a unique Toad background for game descriptions:
Virtual Console Differences
20 stars that can only be collected through communication are collected automatically when the player collects 170 stars and watches credits. An unmodified Japanese ROM hasn't been surfaced yet. ID is AGB-AQWJ-JPN.
