Gran Turismo 2/Gran Turismo Mode Disc
This is a sub-page of Gran Turismo 2.
Content pertaining to GT Mode or exclusively found on its disc is documented on this sub-page.
Unused Graphics
The files that contain the following graphics may be found under the arcade directory of GT2.VOL.
Platinum Prize
Found in license_tim.tim is the GT Mode menu graphic for an intended fourth license test prize that was never implemented. This icon and a text string are the only remnants of the "Platinum Prize," as no code references them. This is displayed if the player's license results data is tampered with and set to 5 for any test.
Super License Widget Icon
Found in gt_items.tim is a placeholder icon intended to represent the Super License, for use in GT Mode menus to dynamically indicate an event's license restriction (as defined by gtmode_race.dat). This goes unused as the only event to require that license is the Event Synthesizer, which is completely inaccessible until the license is earned.
Unused Widgets
The Game Status menu uses 13 different widgets to display various player progression data, such as completion percentage and total credit earnings. Three more are located among them internally but are not used by any GT Mode menu page:
- Widget 0xC4 displays the player's speed record, as set in a "Max Speed" test.
- Widget 0xC5 prints the highest power output of all cars currently in the player's garage.
- Widget 0xC6 works similarly to 0xC4, displaying the player's best "0-400m" test result.
All three print the full "garage name" of the car used to set the record, or nothing at all if no test data exists and/or the garage is empty.
Unused Messages
GT Mode uses individual menu pages for each of its user prompts and errors. Some of these correspond to restrictions or functions not implemented by the final game, rendering them unused.
In order to reveal the following messages, use this GameShark code: 801FF7FC 0XXX (XXX being the message's ID). Be sure to turn the code off after the message appears, or the game may break in unexpected ways.
ID | Message | Explanation |
---|---|---|
0x17 (JP, Nov 29) |
|
Exact purpose unknown, possibly an alternate/generic message for horsepower/drivetrain violation. |
0x25 (JP, Nov 29) |
|
As previously noted, the only events that require the Super License are the Event Synthesizer races, which aren't revealed to the user until the S-License is earned. It can be triggered if the player uses a GameShark code, enters the Event Synthesizer screen before obtaining the license and tries to enter a race. |
0x3 (JP, Nov 29) |
|
When you try to enter a rally event, dirt tires are automatically equipped if you've purchased them, rendering this question unused. |
0x314 (JP, Dec 22) |
|
In the Japanese versions of GT2, the player is not required to finish the GT Nationals events before entering the Euro-Pacific and World League events. While this restriction was added to the initial US release, the second Japanese version remained unrestricted, rendering this newly added error message unused. |
0x315 (JP, Dec 22) |
|
Just like above, the player is not required to finish the Euro-Pacific events before taking a shot at the World League in the Japanese versions of the game. Said restriction was added in the initial US version, while the second Japanese build remained untouched apart from this message being added and left unused. |
0xA (JP, Nov 29) |
|
Likely meant for events restricted to Turbo-charged cars, with Supercharged cars being forbidden. |
0xC (JP, Nov 29) |
|
In the original Gran Turismo, an event known as "Normal Car Cup" ("Normal Car World Speed Contest" in the European version) exists, and only unmodified cars may participate in it. This message suggests that a similar event was planned for GT2 at one point, but the idea was scrapped. Said restriction returned in Gran Turismo 3 in the shape of the "Polyphony Digital Cup" as well as two endurance events. |
0xD (JP, Nov 29) |
|
The inverse of the Supercharger warning above. |
0x27 (JP, Nov 29) |
|
In Gran Turismo, the player must pass the first seven tests before taking the 8th and final test of a license. Since such restriction doesn't exist in GT2', this goes unused. |
0x2E (JP, Nov 29) |
|
Because you save either from the Save Game menu (from the title screen) or from the prize money screen, not from Garage (unlike the first game), this goes unused. |
0x14 (JP, Nov 29) |
|
The game uses a different message when asking about installing a newly purchased part. This potentially refers to equipping parts from the shop screen, which is not possible in the final game as it just tells you that the part has already been purchased. |
Unused Dealership Menu Pages
A typical dealership in GT2 contains submenus for its new car lineup(s), tuning and events, with most also offering "special model" vehicles. While Mercedes-Benz does not offer a "special model," a menu page still exists for one in gtmenudat.dat, suggesting that this exclusion was made fairly late into development. The only plausible candidate for being paired with it, the CLK Race Car, is equally unused.
Within the "tune up" menu, each car upgrade has its corresponding menu page, including racing modifications. Three manufacturers, however, do not have modifiable models in the game: Plymouth, Ruf and Vector. While Vector's "racing modification" menu can be accessed if the player gets in an M12 LM Edition, the other two are rendered entirely unused by the fact neither manufacturer has special models in the game to begin with.
Unused Car Descriptions
A handful of car descriptions are only assigned to unobtainable, unused or even non-existent vehicles, being inaccessible through normal gameplay.
Volkswagen Polo 16V and GTI
Of all unused cars, the Polo 1.4 16V (gvp6n) is the most complete, with finished descriptions for all regions. This also hints that, in addition to the axed G40 model, a GTI version was considered but never made it either. A 2001 year model Polo GTI would later appear in Gran Turismo 4.
Ford Escort GTi
In addition to the available Ford Escort Rally Car (efesr), a road version of the Escort was considered for inclusion in the game, but never made it past a placeholder entry in demo builds. Along with a logo graphic, its description sneaked into the final product, but is assigned to the non-existent efesn model in regions outside of Japan, requiring a GameShark code or garage data manipulation in order to be accessed by players.
Honda Integra and NSX
Although the Honda versions of the Integra and NSX aren't regularly available for players of the North American version of GT2, they all feature translated descriptions which refer to the regularly available Acura models (all of which were recycled from the first game). Only some Acura models — Acura Integra GS-R '98 (h2ain), Acura NSX '91 (h2a0n) and Acura NSX '97 (h2a2n) — offer descriptions, rendering these inaccessible by normal means.

Esso-sponsored Cars
Due to developer oversight, the Exxon-sponsored variants of the Peugeot 206, 206 Rally Car, 406 Sedan and Toyota 2000GT don't have any description assigned to them in solodata.dat, while the Esso-sponsored versions do. Since these variants aren't accessible in the North American version of the game by regular means, their descriptions — significantly different from those found in the European version of the game — go unseen.
Work-in-Progress Translation Files
gtmenudat.dat, found in the various regional directories within gtmenu, contains button and widget definition files for thousands of GT Mode menu pages, as well as their localised foreground graphics. In the original Japanese and North American releases of GT2, unused language files contain a decent amount of work-in-progress imagery, sporting designs and text from early iterations of the menus.
To access the following graphics in-game, set 1C9D40 (original JP version) or 1C9340 (original NA version) to one of these values:
Value | Language |
---|---|
01 | English (North America) |
02 | English (Europe) |
03 | French |
04 | German |
05 | Italian |
06 | Spanish |
Japanese Version, North America Archive
The GT menu archive found under the usa directory in the original Japanese release doesn't hold much interesting material, being mostly comprised of nearly-complete English screens and Japanese placeholders. It does contain, however, some early graphics, the most interesting ones displayed in the following gallery:
Japanese Version, Euro Archives
While the graphics in the US GT menu file may be considered not far from completion, the files for the British English (eng), French (fra), German (ger) and Italian (ita) languages contain far rougher designs for many of the race event screens. They hint that GT Nationals races, as well as Special Events, would effectively restrict car usage to the specified car types and countries, something that never materialized outside of drivetrain and aspiration checks. Examples of early material include:
Early GT Foundation top menu screen. A similar design is seen in a screenshot from the GT2 user manual, where a mirrored version of the background picture of Gran Turismo's title screen is used.
North American Version, Euro Archives
The initial North American release doesn't contain much material not previously seen in the Japanese files — a Spanish language archive is present in its VOL, containing translated versions of the rough graphics above. As for updated content, the most interesting bits are:
Event Data
GT Mode event data is handled by the various regional variants of gtmode_race.dat, found under carparam. As over 220 events and 1200 opponent entries exist, they naturally contain quite a bit of unused data, all of which is described in this section.
Peugeot 206 Manufacturer Events
Although one-make race data exists for both Peugeot 106 and 206 models, only the former is actually referenced in-game. The leftover 206 data is completely valid however, including proper model restrictions and even accounting for the separate Esso/Exxon variants of the car.

A.I. Opponents
Similarly to the Peugeot 206 opponents above, several other cars have data defined to be used by the A.I., but go unreferenced due to either being replaced or flat out skipped in event data. Unless explicitly flagged to not appear in any region, road cars listed here may show up in the Event Synthesizer.
Gran Turismo World League
These opponents are listed right after those used in the Euro League and Pacific League, suggesting they may have comprised the original World League line-up at an earlier point in development. Of note, the final game's event uses the same opponents as the Gran Turismo All Stars, in the 0x236–0x245 range.

Muscle Car Cup
Among the vehicles seen in the Muscule cup are three unused pairs of opponents, originally intended for races 1 and 2 of the event. The series is typically populated by late 60's/early 70's muscle cars, which may be a factor in these mid to late 90's models being replaced.
While the Mustang wouldn't seem too out of place racing with other American muscle cars, the Z and GTO may be seen as a stretch from Polyphony's part, as similar models were commercially available at North American dealerships around that time – the Z opponent in particular was changed into a US-spec 300ZX for the western releases of GT2 despite remaining unused in all versions.

GT300 Championship
Listed among and after the vehicles seen in the GT300 Championship is a multitude of assorted rally cars, race-modified road cars and duplicates from the event's regular line-up.
The game's intro FMV features footage of GT300 machines racing against rally cars at various points, suggesting that these opponents were, indeed, intended to partake in it at some point in development. The duplicates suggest that, at first, each race would feature a different line-up of cars, and that the developers did not consider reusing existent entries just yet. The final line-up consists of the same eight opponents that are reused throughout the series, all being proper GT300-spec vehicles.

Gran Turismo All Stars
In a similar fashion to the original Gran Turismo World League, the All Stars line-up was also meant to feature the dummied out CLK touring car as well as the elusive XJR15 racer, in addition to a road going Altezza 280T. Like the rally cars intended for the GT300 series, these three vehicles can be seen racing alongside All Stars opponents in the game's intro FMV.

Finally, three regional variants of unused opponents can be found towards the end of the global opponent list. The two Peugeot 206s are presumed to be replacements for the vehicles from the proposed GT300 line-up, while the Calibra would appear in the original World League in the European version of the game, should the player choose the English language.

UK and DE Billboard Pools
GT2's event structure allows developers to assign a "pool" of dynamic billboards, referencing data from .crstims.tsd, in order to restrict which sponsor banners can appear at certain events. 10 different pools are defined in that file, with 6 corresponding to countries represented in GT League's Nationals event section. While four are used by their corresponding events, UK Nationals and German Nationals' three races have none assigned to them, leaving the pools labeled UK and DE unused.
The most likely reason for this is that these events take place on Trial Mountain Circuit and Deep Forest Raceway, returning courses from the original Gran Turismo that were not adapted to make use of dynamic billboards. Every GT Mode event that uses GT1 tracks has no billboard pool assigned, and the circuits themselves are flagged not to allow dynamic billboards in .crsinfo.
