Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas/Version and Platform Differences

From The Cutting Room Floor
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This is a sub-page of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

This cactus is UNDER CONSTRUCTION
This article is a work in progress.
...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.
Hmmm...
To do:
A lot.
  • A lot of missing information about the "Remastered" version.
This guy's videos will help though.

San Andreas has so many ports, versions, and subtle changes between them that it could give Skyrim and even Grand Theft Auto V a run for their money. But not Doom. Never Doom.

Platform Differences

San Andreas has been released on about 10 different platforms over the years, and with all of these releases, there are a lot of subtle (and not as subtle) changes to the game.

For consistency's sake, comparisons will be based on the PS2 release. If a certain port is specifically based on another port, it will be noted along with any port-specific differences.

General Differences

  • The PC and Xbox version uses DDS compression for their textures, which leads to some artifacts such as loss of color data. One such notable example is the C.R.A.S.H. mission icon, where the red siren light looks grey.
    • As written later in the page, the Xbox port arguably got worse treatment in terms of DDS compression artifacting.
PlayStation 2 Xbox, Windows

  • The Steam re-release brings back some features from the Xbox release.
    • The HUD text size on the PS2 version matches the original PC version, and the HUD text size on the Xbox matches the newer Steam PC version.

Windows (Original) Windows (Steam, RGL)

  • The Save/Load menu also has a similar situation, displaying incremental numbers next to each save only in the Xbox and re-released PC versions.

Windows (Original) Windows (Steam, RGL)

  • The Contemporary Soul Radio station had its name over the course inconsistently change from 103.2 to 103.9 in both the texture and the name itself. Initially called CSR 103.2 all around, then CSR 103.9 only in the string, and only then changing the texture to also say 103.9.
  • Only the currently selected radio station has its icon displayed in full colour on the PS2. The other ports display them all in full color.

Xbox

Grand Theft Auto- San Andreas-title.png
  • The Xbox version has a Start screen that no other release has.
  • The Xbox version has a "LOADING..." string in the bottom right corner that appears whenever the game is - you guessed it - loading.
    • As a sidenote, the loading screen on the PS2 version is simply a 30 second timer, whereas on PC and Xbox the loading speed can vary.
PlayStation 2, Windows Xbox
GTASAPC-FIN LoadingScr.png GTASAXBOX-FIN LoadingScr.png
  • The DDS compression used on the textures is ridiculous, and leaves tons of alpha channel artifacts on the Xbox version. Below are only a few samples.
    • The PS2 version uses raw bitmaps, meaning it doesn't have any compression artifacts, other than color reduction in some cases since the textures are either 4-bit or 8-bit. Thus the PS2 version has the closest-to-original textures.

PC

This will cover general PlayStation 2 to PC differences, that were present in the first version. See below for differences between revisions of the PS2 version, and patches of the Retail and Steam PC versions.

General

  • The moon has correct phases on the consoles but not on the PC - it is either always a full moon or the moon is not visible at all.
  • There is generally more rubbish and shrubbery on the PC version, mainly for visual effect, and most notably in Los Santos - Grove Street certainly has more "scenery" on PC. Interestingly, these details can be seen in pre-release screenshots and trailers for the PS2 version, implying that they were left out of the retail PS2 release due to limitations. That being said, there are significantly fewer parked cars and car spawns in general on PC compared to the console versions.
  • When entertaining prostitutes in a vehicle, the moans from CJ and the girl have been removed, but the vehicle still makes bumping sounds.
  • The ambient lighting on the PC version is more life-like (comparatively at least) verses the console versions' more "smoggy" look. This is particularly evident in Los Santos which features a distinct orange tint during the day on PS2.
  • There are less pedestrians in the PC version (notably if you go near Gant Bridge).
  • The parachute animation in the PC version is static even when tilting left and right, while the PS2 version displayed it properly.
  • The "Cars Drive on Water" cheat has been cut. It's unknown if this was intentional or not, but since that cheat made some planes such as the Nevada and Rustler roll backwards upon spawning, it might have been the former.
  • AI drivers will get extreme road rage and drive after/into you if you bump into them more often on PC.
  • The co-operative play modes in the console versions were removed from the PC version. Code does still exist for a 2-player pool mini-game though.

Vehicles

  • Some large trucks have double-rear wheels on the consoles, but not on the PC version. This did indirectly fix a visual bug where the double-rear wheels would only leave single tire marks on the road though.
  • The code used for helicopters' rotor blade rotating effect is bugged, making it not work properly.
  • Some cars such as the Bloodring Banger and Sandking have missing decals due to incorrect alpha.

Missions

  • The targets in the Beefy Baron side mission are referred to as "Berkley's delivery vans" as opposed to "Berkley's Topfun vans" like on PS2.

Los Santos

  • The statue at the Atrium (where the mission "Just Business" takes place) can't be destroyed on PC due to a bug.

Red County

  • The unmarked Well Stacked Pizza in Montgomery has a new door, as the PS2 version had the same door as the one leading to the kitchen of the restaurant, allowing the player to access the entrance box by using a gun or a jetpack.
    • Oddly enough, the entrance to the Gaydar Station club in San Fierro, which uses similar doors, wasn't rectified.

San Fierro

  • The Shady Industries building in San Fierro was changed to Solarin Industries on the PC, although the various vans around San Andreas maintained the Shady Industries logo and were not changed.
  • Hemlock Tattoo in San Fierro has a unique tattoo selection unlike the PS2 version.

Las Venturas

  • The original PS2 version has an additional Pay 'n' Spray garage located in The Camel's Toe, Las Venturas, right next to the parking lot. It repairs vehicles just like any other Pay 'n' Spray, but it's not marked on the radar map and it doesn't work properly: when entering with a vehicle, the camera doesn't position itself outside-and-behind the player like in the other Pay 'n' Sprays, and the player has a chance of falling through the floor and into the blue abyss when on-foot inside. Rather than being fixed, the garage was completely disabled on the later PS2 releases and the ports, which was done by simply putting a static garage door over the entrance and removing all of its signage, however, this quick fix resulted in the oddity of the player sinking through the floor if positioned against the entrance, although the player can simply jump out.
Original Re-release
GTASAPS2v1-LVPayNSpray.png GTASAPS2v2-LVPayNSpray.png
  • There are a large number of objects in Las Venturas missing from the PC version, mainly outside the Four Dragons Casino and The Visage. This seems to be a simple omission from the map as they are still in the game.

Version Differences

This is where it gets messy...

PlayStation 2

San Andreas has two PlayStation 2 revisions: Version 1 (1.03) and Version 2 (2.01)

PS2 v2.01

Version 2 of the PS2 release was revised in wake of the Hot Coffee controversy, dated July 2005. This revision is included in Second Edition, Greatest Hits/Platinum, and Trilogy copies, and a modified version is used as the basis of the Japanese revisions. Along with the removal of the hot minigame's assets from the files, there were also some bug fixes and script changes which would make it into later ports:

  • The Cluckin' Bell in Market is now marked on the map.
  • Life's a Beach now requires 2500 points to gain access to the sounds van, rather than the original 4000.
  • The infamous Supply Lines mission has been rectified; the original version of the mission was notorious for the Baron using up fuel even when gliding, making it extremely difficult to beat. This version makes it so that the Baron doesn't use fuel when gliding.

PC

San Andreas is so good, it gets to be released on PC twice! Once in retail (June 7, 2005), and once again digitally on Steam (January 4, 2008).

Retail - 1.01

The 1.01 patch was released on August 10, 2005. It fixed several bugs and added a couple of features, along with completely disabling the infamous Hot Coffee content.

The official notes indicate the following additions and changes (any spelling or grammar errors are as-is):

ADDITIONS
*Added support for 720p and 1080i HDTV resolutions.
*Version Number displayed on game title screen.

BUGS FIXED
*Issue fixed on machines where the OS has been updated (one OS installed over top of another) and has 2 registry keys that point to the users "My Documents" folder (we incorrectly used to assume the Win2000 folder, now correctly uses the last installed OS folder) - users know this as "user account period bug".
*Crash when entering advanced display options with only 32 meg of video ram (32 meg of video ram is not supported and will only allow use of 640*480 in 16 and 32 bit. At this resolution it is likely you will see the "Black Roads" LOD problem). We do NOT however disallow machines with 32 meg of video ram from running GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas.
*Crash when entering advanced display options on a dual monitor machine after :- starting game on primary monitor in maximum resolution, exiting, starting again in maximum resolution on secondary monitor. Secondary monitor maximum resolution had to be greater than maximum resolution of primary monitor.
*Destroyed cars now are correct colour.
*Dirty cars now able to get clean.
*Numpad 5 key is now mappable when re-defining controls.
*Issue on all machines where certain collisions caused parts of the audio system to crash (sound effects, cutscene audio - only radio keeps going) - users know this as "Rain / Thunderstorm bug".
*Improvements to DVD streaming.
*Audio problems in interior / exterior transitions and getting in / out of cars fixed.
*Some fixes to ensure reverb is not present at certain save points.
*Improvements to dance game timings.
*Crash occuring when using "user radio files" while the frame limiter is disabled.

Retail - 2.0

Version "2.0" of the game is effectively just a retail release of v1.01 in pretty much every way, except the version number on the main menu will say v2.00 instead of v1.01. It does, however, also make modding effectively impossible as it will check the size of the gta3.img file, and if the sizes don't match up byte-to-byte, it will cause the game to crash (coincidentally, all Hot Coffee assets were removed with this release). Also, saves from previous versions are incompatible. Good update.

For the remainder of the article, v1.01 will be referred to as v2 for sanity's sake since they are almost identical.

Steam - "3.0"

Ah shit. Here we go again.

The Steam release, also known as v3.0 according to the menu, is a very interesting story indeed. Firstly, the fact that it even calls itself v3 of the game is very misleading, as it has almost none of the additions from the retail release patches (apart from the .img check/lack of modding, the removal of Hot Coffee assets and the exploded cars fix for some reason). Rather, it's evidently based on the Xbox version of the game on account of some Xbox-exclusive quirks such as smaller subtitles/radio headers and a similar save menu. It also has its own slew of unique bugs...and fixes.

These changes include:

  • Two bug fixes exclusive to the Steam version: Shooting weapons while on a jet pack will no longer have the weapon icon disappear while doing so, and a bug that made some objects change its lighting when switching from armed to unarmed was fixed as well.
  • Steering with Mouse is enabled by default.
  • The frame limiter is slightly broken, as rather than locking the game at 25 FPS when enabled, it locks at 26 FPS, which actually makes it slightly choppier.
  • While semi-inherent to a game being on Steam, this release introduces DRM, meaning you must be online/have Steam open to play the game at all.

Steam - 3.1/newsteam r1

Also known as newsteam r1, this was an update for the Steam version released on November 7, 2014. The update is rather infamous for a number of reasons.

  • Most infamously, a whopping 18 tracks were cut with this update due to Rockstar no longer wanting to renew the licenses for them. One of the cut songs was Killing in the Name Of, which actually has a small snippet played when a date goes wrong. To replace this, Rockstar simply has the same date music play regardless of if it's going well or not.
  • The game now has support for XInput controllers now, such as Xbox 360 pads. Previous versions had wonky analog stick support, meaning you could not do things such as move the camera with them. For some reason, the UI still shows generic "JOY#" words instead of graphics for the actual corresponding buttons, and the triggers didn't support different amounts of pressure for driving, meaning you can only go full speed when using them. Also, there is no support for rumble.
    • Support for DirectInput pads has been removed as well.
  • Support for 5:4 resolutions was removed for unknown reasons.
  • Version numbers are no longer displayed on the menu.

Steam - 3.2/newsteam r2

Rockstar released another update one month later, known as the newsteam r2 update. Not much was changed with this except that 16:9 resolutions were finally added in...but bizarrely, the vertical ratio has been shrunken slightly, meaning everyone and everything looks subtly more squished than they did before.

Surprisingly, both the .img check and DRM were removed with this update, meaning it could be (partially) modded again and no longer required an internet connection at all times.

iOS/Android/Windows UWP Version

Hmmm...
To do:
Add more changes and bugs found in both the mobile and remastered console versions.

An iOS port of the game was released on December 12, 2013, an Android port released on December 19, 2013, and a Windows UWP port released in 2014 by War Drum Studios (later known as Grove Street Games). These ports contain a fair amount of differences.

Changes

Menus and HUD

  • The menus were revamped, such as:
    • The main and pause menus
    • Shop menus, this makes it easy to see what the item, vehicle upgrade, hairstyle, tattoo, or clothing would look like without having to preview them with the preview button.
  • The HUD was revamped, with changes such as:
    • The top right HUD has a makeover, with the current weapon icon being moved to the right of the time, armor, health, breath meter, and money.
    • The money text was moved underneath the time, and the armor bar was moved underneath the health bar as well.
      • This also changes the way it displays the money, where the empty digits do not appear.
    • The wanted level stars appear more spaced out than in the original version.
    • The current vehicle and location text was moved to the bottom right corner to make room for the mobile buttons, and the current radio station was moved to the bottom left.
    • The radar was moved to the top left as well, whereas in the console versions it was moved back to the bottom left like in the original version.
    • The notification boxes now have a gradient style for the box itself, and now have animations.
      • When in menus, the notifications appear on the top of the screen as a one-row line of text.
    • The subtitles are now located on the center bottom instead of next to the radar.
    • The mission timer, vehicle health, etc. were moved to the top of the screen with a gradient box around them.
    • The interaction menu now shows the gang's logo and buttons for accepting and declining fights and replying positively and negatively.
  • Pausing the game now requires the player to tap on the radar when playing with touchscreen controls.
  • Video poker, inside tracks, arcade machines, and dancing minigames now have a revamped interface.

Upscaled/Changed Textures and Models

  • Various textures were upscaled and/or changed, such as the weapon icons, which also include unused icons.
    • Every map texture was upscaled, as a result, opening the pause menu can reveal that the game is attempting to render high-resolution versions of the map textures in real-time.
    • The blips were upscaled and appear different than in the original versions.
    • Loading screens now appear upscaled and/or flipped to make room for the game's logo.
    • Vehicle scratches and broken glass were updated.
    • Fences now appear different.
    • The hand models were updated.
  • The dumbbell's texture was fixed, whereas the PC version was using the cheerybox01 and cheerybox03 textures for the dumbbell, making it look golden.
  • Cars now have a rather selectively applied shine effect.
  • Various trucks and trailers now have dual rear wheels, but these wheels do not generate skid marks.

Limitations

  • Various effects and vegetation do not appear or are modified due to limitations, such as:
    • Heatwaves
    • Fire distortion
    • Water distortion
    • Motion blur
    • Clouds while flying
    • Fog particles
    • Noise during rain
    • Grain from using Night Vision and Thermal Vision goggles
    • Grass
    • Bushes
    • Cacti
    • Crops
    • Certain rocks
    • Breakable trees

Changed Mechanics

  • The idle camera does not exist.
  • CJ now follows the camera's direction even with a keyboard.
  • CJ will pedal on bikes faster when holding the acceleration button instead of tapping the button.
  • The plane controls are different, the landing gear will retract if the plane is high enough from the ground, and to go forward, you'll have to tilt the plane forwards.
    • This was changed in the console versions so that you can still use the A/Cross button to control the height, L3 to toggle the landing gear, and the right stick to change the thruster angle, like in the original version.
    • The lock-on mechanic for Hydras was changed, instead of using the R1 button to lock on, you will automatically lock on, resulting in random crosshairs appearing even if you didn't want to attack. Exiting the Hydra while the crosshair is shown will freeze the crosshair in place unless you aim.
  • In the mobile version, double-tapping the sprint button will make CJ jump.
  • CJ will jump, enter/exit vehicles, or shoot with a scoped weapon once you let go of the corresponding button instead of pressing it down.
  • When you exit the vehicle, CJ will hit the handbrakes and exit instead, preventing from him bailing out.
  • The rifle instead goes into a first-person perspective.
  • The diving controls were inverted.
  • Falling into water will not make CJ go deeper into the water.
  • Even with the frame limiter turned on in the mobile versions, CJ will drastically swim slower and drain stamina faster, meaning that certain missions such as the triathlon will be impossible to beat since the NPCs swim at normal speed.
  • CJ can eject from the jetpack even in mid-air by pressing the exit vehicle button.
  • The auto-climb feature was added, where you can easily climb on objects by sprinting. However, this makes CJ climb up objects that he didn't want to. This can be toggled in settings only on the mobile, physical Xbox 360, and PS3 versions.
  • You can also hold the attack button to make CJ constantly punch and kick your opponents.
  • Various vehicles like forklifts, dumpers, tow trucks, etc. have their special action simplified, resulting in pressing the corresponding button to use their special actions instead of using the right stick to adjust their actions.
  • In the burglar job, instead of pressing the corresponding button to pick up an item, CJ will automatically pick up the item nearby instead, even if he didn't want to pick it up.
    • Sometimes, CJ can get stuck while trying to automatically pick up an item, with no way to cancel this automated action unless getting hurt or letting the time run out.
    • The boxville will automatically open its doors as soon as you exit the vehicle and closes when you're inside. When this happens, you'll hear a weird sound effect.
  • Many exercises in gyms were simplified for mobile and console releases.
    • Bench pressing and dumbbells will only let you press one button instead of alternating between two buttons to complete a rep when using a gamepad. The power meter does not show up as well.
      • In the mobile version, you'll have to tap the lift button at the right time when the bar goes into the highlighted area to complete a rep.
      • CJ can easily lift heavier weights for some reason.
    • Stationary bicycles and treadmills in the mobile version have you rotate the thumbstick in a circle to speed up.
  • The pool minigame has CJ automatically choosing the strength of the hit, pressing the corresponding button will make CJ hit the ball at that strength.
  • Holding down the horn button will not allow CJ to use the secondary siren.
  • The Police Maverick's searchlight cannot be turned on, however, you can still enter a Police Maverick that still has it on.
  • Respawning at hospitals will not take away all of CJ's weapons, much like in future games.
  • Cameras will not save the photos to your gallery, and zoom in less than in the original version.
    • The zoom change also applies to sniper rifles.

Changed Controls

  • Many keyboard controls were changed in the mobile versions, such as:
    • Tab now makes CJ enter or exit vehicles.
    • Q now toggles aiming.
    • 1 and 2 switch weapons.

Debug Tools

  • Pressing F11 on a keyboard will toggle the touchscreen controls.
  • Holding the right mouse button will display touchscreen areas along with their respective labels.

Other Changes

  • There are more locations where cars can be seen parked, but some existing ones have some cars at the wrong angles.
  • During a gang war, the wanted level will be disabled for the remainder of the attack.
    • You can also end a gang war by canceling a vigilante mission.

Bugs

  • The fog is simply a wall instead of covering the distant objects in the fog. During foggy weather, it gets even worse.
  • When playing in 16:9 aspect ratio, when the FOV is decreased by driving fast enough in a vehicle, you can see a reflection of the gameplay on the sides of the sky. It also happens on iOS/Android phones with a notch (For example, iPhone X, 11, etc.) but it is much worse than the Xbox 360 and PS3 remastered releases. The reflection was replaced by white boxes in the PS3 version.
  • Cars can mostly or sometimes wobble while driving them. This was partially fixed in the mobile version but wasn't fixed for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions.
  • Ambulances, firetrucks, and planes tend to disappear before arriving near the player if the game is played in 16:9 ratio.
  • Parts of the radar may appear blurry as the game tries to load these parts in real-time.
  • The developers accidentally broke vertex welding by making it handled by a single byte, instead of two bytes. This causes the models to become overstretched for most animations, resulting in strange-looking faces for the characters and other issues.
  • Like in the PC version, weapons can no longer be seen through windows.
  • When Sweet says "Hey, I got unfinished business. Big love." the game sometimes or most often doesn't let that line's audio play. If this happens, the subtitle for this line will not appear.
  • Turning off the subtitles only affects cutscenes.
  • When watching certain cutscenes in 16:9 ratio, some models would be frozen in place before that model's animations are loaded. This was due to the camera zoom in both the mobile and Xbox 360 versions, but this was fixed in the PS3 version.
    • In Drive-Thru, Big Smoke can be seen t-posing outside of the Cluckin' Bell, and later on the bag can be seen spawning in as Smoke grabs it.
    • In Wrong Side of the Tracks, Big Smoke's car can be seen bouncing in the garage.
    • In Cleaning the Hood, CJ can be seen on the left side of the screen inside a wall as soon as B Dup closes the door.
    • In Gray Imports, The characters can be seen levitating, and Pulaski can be seen moving up from the driver's seat as the camera shows him in the police car.
    • In Wu Zi Mu, Cesar can be seen levitating on the left side of the screen as well before his animations are loaded in the next scene.
    • In Misappropriation, at one point in the cutscene, the grill can be seen bouncing.
  • Unpausing the game while a character is speaking will restart the speech.
  • There is a chance that when CJ is buying a can of Sprunk, he will skip the coining process and go straight into drinking instead.
  • When using keyboard controls, pressing Alt will permanently make CJ walk until you restart the game.

Speedrun Glitch

On October 23, 2019, Powdinet completed the UWP version of GTA San Andreas in 15 minutes by following these steps:

  • Steal a police bike and find grenades before 7:46 in-game time, then immediately start and end the vigilante mission exactly on that time, then start Sweet & Kendl.
  • Take an alternate route to Grove Street to avoid vending machines, as getting near any of them will cause $CURRENT_TIME_IN_MS2 to display false values.
  • After finishing the mission, enter the bar without answering the call, then enter and exit Go Go Space Monkey until the screen turns white.
  • Kill CJ with grenades to respawn at the hospital, then answer the call and hold the escape and answer call keys at the same time without letting go. When entering a vehicle, you must also hold the stats button. When starting the Ryder mission, let go of the keys.
  • Pressing F will break the "Show me how they drive on the East Coast" line. When arriving at the barber shop, the phone will ring again, hold the answer call key whilst purchasing a $200+ haircut, and let go of the key and hold F when leaving the shop.
  • Reenter and leave the barber shop to gain camera control, then run to Grove Street with the police bike stored in it while constantly pausing the game to repeat the "You know something? I take it back, Old Reece still got it cracking" line.
  • Upon restarting the Ryder mission, drive to your garage, throw a grenade at Ryder's car and then enter the police bike, after the mission fails, the camera will snap to where the cutscene was.
  • You will have a 1000-millisecond window to start the vigilante mission before CJ gets off the bike. After this is correctly performed, End of the Line begins at the Tenpanny chase scene, allowing you to beat the game when this mission ends.

Other Changes

  • OG Loc has a different, glitchy texture for his beanie in the cutscenes. This is because the texture is from an earlier design that had him wearing a bandana on his head, which was only seen in an early screenshot of the PS2 version. His in-game model uses the normal texture though.
    • At the same time, Ryder's cutscene texture is now consistent with his in-game model, which is also from the early screenshots of the PS2 version.

Autosaving

This, and the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions contain an autosave feature that will be triggered upon completing a mission. However, there are some flaws with this feature.

  • Using the resume option in the title screen will not load a manual save and will load an autosave instead.
    • The PS3 version fixes this by making it so that manually saving the game will instead overwrite the autosave.
  • Closing the race tournament menu will autosave the game, even if you didn't want to participate in the race.

Checkpoints

These versions also contain a checkpoint system that will sometimes prevent you from restarting the entire mission every time you fail.

  • The mobile version allows you to continue your mission progress with the resume button, but however, this will cause some issues.
  • Sometimes, the traffic spawned after a checkpoint was reached will become frozen when the checkpoint is loaded.

Removed Songs

A number of tracks were removed, presumably due to expired licensing deals. However, upon the removal of these songs, the radio could suddenly rewind, fast forward, or skip the song randomly. This is more common on the Xbox 360 version.

Playback FM

  • "Critical Beatdown" by Ultramagnetic MCs

K-DST

  • "Runnin' Down a Dream" by Tom Petty
  • "Woman to Woman" by Joe Cocker

Bounce FM

  • "Yum Yum (Gimme Some)" by Fatback Band
  • "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" by Gap Band
  • "Running Away" by Roy Ayers

Radio Los Santos

  • "I Don't Give a Fuck" by 2Pac
  • "Express Yourself" by N.W.A.

Radio X

  • "Hellraiser" by Ozzy Osbourne
  • "Killing in the Name" by Rage Against the Machine (this also affects the "bad date" cutscene).

K-JAH West

  • "Don't Let It Go to Your Head" by Black Harmony
  • "Ring My Bell" by Blood Sisters

Master Sounds 98.3

  • "Express Yourself" by Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band
  • "Rock Creek Park" by The Blackbyrds
  • "Funky President" by James Brown (can still be heard inside casinos)
  • "The Payback" by James Brown
  • "The Grunt" by The JB's

Cheats

In the Android and UWP versions, you can use a Bluetooth keyboard or gamepad to enter cheat codes. However, this doesn't work in the iOS version for some reason. This port adds more cheat codes in the game that only keyboards and/or modifying the game can enter.

  • GONPXWR (Invincibility): Toggles enhanced invincibility, which now prevents CJ from getting killed by explosions, drowning, fall damage, and police helicopter turrets. This cheat also makes any vehicle CJ enters invincible.
  • BIEUHQY (Weapon4): Gives CJ a minigun, a vibrator, and thermal vision goggles. Entering the cheat again will replace the thermal vision goggles with night vision goggles.
  • AFJKBNRP (TheGambler): Maxes out the gambling skill.
  • YACKMWS (TimeTravel): Skips 4 hours in-game.
  • BYIXZIY (ScriptBypass): Passes the mission you're currently in. During race missions, the game will teleport your car through every checkpoint in order before ending the mission.
  • KRRIHBT (ShowMappings): Displays usable touchscreen widgets along with their key binds.
  • MIZYXHZ (ShowTapToTarget): Does nothing, supposedly marks an enemy by tapping the fire button.
  • JQFUDUB (ShowTargeting): Displays animation names over CJ, and displays red, green, blue, and white bars which have unknown purposes.
  • Slot_Melee, Slot_Handgun, Slot_SMG, Slot_Shotgun, Slot_Assault_Rifles, Slot_Long_Rifles, Slot_Thrown, Slot_Heavy_Artillery, Slot_Equipment, Slot_Other: These cheats have no combination, and using them crashes the game, supposedly displayed a weapon select menu.
  • Xbox_Helper: This cheat has no combination, and using this cheat changes various stats such as Tattoo budget, Times busted, and People you've wasted to values that upon buying another tattoo, getting busted one more time, and killing one more pedestrian will give you their respective achievement on Xbox 360 and PS3.

"Remastered" Version

Hmmm...
To do:
Rewrite this section to make it focus on the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version and move any necessary changes to the iOS/Android section.

On October 26, 2014, the original Xbox 360 emulated version was replaced with a "remastered" version built off the mobile port; this version also replaced the PS3 emulated version on December 1, 2015, although the version released on PS4 uses the emulated PS2 original as a base until it got delisted on October 11, 2021, in favor of the definitive edition. Despite being considered a "remastered" version by Rockstar, this has several issues not present in the original or mobile releases.

Bugs

  • Anti-aliasing does not exist in this version, as it is more noticeable on the power lines. The Xbox 360 version partially fixes this issue by adding a slight blur effect on the screen. This can also be partially fixed by playing the PS3 version in the RPCS3 emulator with a filter.
  • The original Xbox 360 release had poor optimization that was fixed about a week later.
  • Reuniting the Families and Air Raid no longer allow the player to skip cutscenes.
  • A lot of audio randomly cuts out, stutters, or does not play at all.
  • Damaged car parts change color if the same car type with different colors and destroyed car parts are loaded.
  • There is a chance that the pilot school mission freezes on the Circle Airstrip preview screen, or on every preview screen unless the "OK" button is rapidly mashed, which otherwise prevents any sort of further progress in the story. This is mostly an issue on the Xbox 360 version, but some people have reported it happening on PS3 as well.
  • During the special date with Michelle, after Carl exits the car after the game tells you that she will drive instead will cause her to drive away without letting Carl enter the passenger seat. This will result in the game being stuck in the cinematic camera until the date fails by pressing the exit vehicle button, doing so will teleport Carl a couple of feet high from where the car was at.

PlayStation 3-exclusive Changes and Bugs

  • The PS3 version exclusively has the 2-player free-roam and rampage modes from the PS2/Xbox versions.
    • However, Player 2 cannot choose a different skin.
  • Vibration support was added.
  • The waterfall appears static.
  • When playing the dancing minigame in Life's a Beach and during a date, there is a delay between the buttons, making you lose the minigame if you press the buttons in the center of the circle. Pressing the buttons a little bit later will give you a perfect rating instead.

Other Changes

  • Audio was down-sampled and changed to mono, resulting in various audio artifacts, with the PS3 version having even worse audio quality.
