Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon/English Translation Differences
This is a sub-page of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon.
This article is a work in progress. ...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes. Notes: I deleted the giant table of unsorted text differences, and am adding that info back piece by piece as I categorize it, summarize it, explain it, etc. In the meantime, some stuff will be missing; for the full list of differences, see the earliest revision of this page. |
To do:
|
There are a lot of textual differences between the North American and European English text. In fact, over 50% of the text strings differ in some way! There are a few widespread differences that affect lots of game text. Lines displaying only these differences have been removed from this article:
- The device Professor E. Gadd uses to send Luigi to and from the mansions is called the "Pixelator" in the North American version and the "Pixelshifter" in the European version.
- Capitalization is often different. The North American version uses significantly more capital letters than the European version.
- Lines differing only via different names of things that are already listed in their own sections on this page (such as Boos and mansion areas) are not shown here.
- Text is line-wrapped manually in this game, and some text differs in where the line breaks are placed.
Additionally, text colors are correctly reproduced in this article, except to adjust their lightnesses to 50% for readability.

Oddities
Nintendo DS Screen Brightness
North American Quote | European Quote |
---|---|
I was worried that the battery died in the DS. But I turned the screen brightness down, so it should be good for a while. |
You sure took your time. I was worried you'd turned off the volume on your DS. Anyhoo, it looks like everything's working, so we should be good. |
This line of dialogue (string ID F4BE8836) was completely rewritten for the European edition. This is likely because the translators realized that the original Nintendo DS doesn't actually have adjustable screen brightness.
Haunted doggie treat
North American Quote | European Quote |
---|---|
Do you happen to have a haunted doggie treat on you? Maybe you can lure him over! Sorry, I just realized how ridiculous that sounded... I guess you're gonna need to find some other way in there, son! |
Well, I guess there's nothing else for it. You'll just have to find another way in there, son. |
This line from E-1 Front-Door Key (E-1 Front Door Key in the European edition) (string ID B6A3155D) was rewritten. The North American version seems likely to confuse players: throughout the game, golden dog bones summon Polterpups to revive the player if they die, but that has nothing to do with how the player progresses through this particular level.

There's an extraneous "you" in the North American version of this line from A-5 Sticky Situation.

Freaker Sneaker | Sleek Sneaker | It seems this narcissistic ghost doesn't like to turn invisible because he wants everyone to see how good he looks. Bizarre. |
It seems this narcissistic ghost doesn't like turning invisible because it makes it harder for the other ghosts to be dazzled by his fashion sense. |

At first I thought he was trying to attack me, but then I realised he just wanted me to try on his fancy jacket. He could have just asked... | |
Yukata Ball | Spectral Sloth | After a nice hot shower and with no other plans for the day, this Gobber slips right into his bathrobe and gets ready to lounge around. This ghost is living the dream. | |
Blue Pimpernel | I imagine he would have chosen green instead of blue, but green flowers are surprisingly difficult to find. Go figure. |
I imagine he would have chosen green instead of blue, but green flowers are surprisingly difficult to find. Who would've guessed? | |
Sun Flower | Sunflower | Heh! The funny thing...heh heh...the funny thing is...he can't stand the sun! Ho ho! Oho! Hooooo... Is that irony? I never know if I'm using that word correctly. |
Heh! The funny thing...heh heh... the funny thing is...he can't stand the sun! Ho ho! Oho! Hoo... Is that irony? I never know if I'm using that word correctly. |
Daisy | When he's not hungry, he's probably as gentle as a freshly picked flower. Too bad he has a bottomless stomach. |
When he's not hungry, he's probably as gentle as a freshly picked flower. Too bad we'll never know, though; this fellow has a bottomless stomach. | |
Spookumber | Melon-choly | He may look like one of my favorite vegetables, but this ghost didn't come from a creeping vine. More like a creepy vine, right? |
Although his body looks like a big ol' melon, the vertical stripes have a slimming effect. |
Aweberry | His favorite thing to do is dip himself in mud and pretend it's chocolate. It's...odd, to say the least. |
He likes to dip himself in mud and pretend it's chocolate. It's...odd, to say the least. | |
Scorn | This funny-looking ghost has kernels for teeth. I bet he wishes he could pop them when he smiles—if not to give people a big ol' fright, at least to get free popcorn at the movie theater. |
This funny-looking ghost has kernels for teeth. I bet he wishes he could pop them all at once – if not to give people a big ol' fright, at least to get free popcorn at the cinema. | |
Scareambles | Fright Egg | Eureka! This ghostly egg can reassemble itself once it's cracked! |
Eureka! This ghostly egg can reassemble itself once it's been cracked! |
Terrorange | He once helped an amateur farmer win a contest by pretending he was a gigantic orange. Don't ask me how I know that. |
Once he helped a farmer win a contest by pretending he was a gigantic orange. Don't ask me how I know that. | |
Spooky Spook | That's not a costume. He always dresses like that. Seriously. |
He's not in costume; he's just really retro. | |
Scars | Even though he's both a zombie and a ghost, he has fun and enjoys life to the fullest. |
Even though he's half zombie and half ghost, he's a whole load of fun. | |
Scool | Skoul | There's no denying that he looks creepy, but he's actually a pretty interesting feller once you get to know him. |
On first impression, you might think this fellow is creepy, but once you get to know him...you know for sure. |
Jack-goo-lantern | Jack-goo'-lantern | It's always "trick or trick" with this guy! He seems to have conveniently forgotten the treat part. Sheesh! |

Lady Gug | Shadybird | Sure, his name might have "lady" in it, but nothing could be further from the truth. |
His name may have "bird" in it, but don't expect him to sing for you. |
Fright Fly | Terrorfly | Criminy! I didn't think something so small could be so...terrifying! The size-to-scare ratio of this little guy is off the charts! | |
Go-Bee | Grumble Bee | Incredible! This ghostly bee has glands that produce delicious spectral honey! Although, too much of the stuff will make your tongue numb. Take my word for it. |
Instead of covering everything with goo, our stripey friend here prefers to splatter the walls and floors with delicious honey. But be careful not to lick it! It'll make your tongue go numb. |
Clown Fishy | The reason this fellow is so angry is because people keep thinking clown fish are actual clowns. They're not. He's got no sense of humor whatsoever. Didn't laugh at any of my jokes. |

Shriek Shark | The entire time I've been observing him, this tough-looking feller has been practicing swimming through the air like a shark. Still needs some work. |
The entire time I've been observing him, this tough-looking spook has been practising swimming through the air like a shark. Still needs some work. | |
Wurdle | Snapper | This ghost would have you believe that he moves really slowly, but he's just trying to trick you. He's actually very fast! |
This ghost would have you believe that he moves really slowly, but don't be fooled – it's just an act. Yep, this one's not just crafty, he's pretty swift, too! |
Bad-minton | He tries to act like a roughneck, but he secretly loves argyle sweater-vests. I'm pretty sure he comes from old money. |
He's not bad, per se. He's just...really mischievous. | |
Footbrawl | American Footbrawl | I'd stay out of his way unless you want to get tackled. He's been voted MVP of the ghost football league for three consecutive years! |
I'd stay out of his way unless you want to get tackled. Nothing like a bit of protective padding to bring out your boisterous side. |
Tennis Menace | Careful with this one! He's been known to sneak onto tennis courts midmatch and cover the ball with ghostly goo! |
Careful with this one! He's been known to sneak onto tennis courts mid-match and give the ball a good whack himself. | |
Soccer Ball | Ball Hog | Whatever you do, don't try to touch him with your hands! Oddly, though, he doesn't mind if you knock him around with your feet. |
Whatever you do, don't try to pick him up or touch him with your hands! He hates that. Oddly, though, he doesn't seem to mind if you knock him around with your feet. |
Awelligator | Maligator | Much like a real gator, he hides under the water until someone steps a little too close. |
Much like a real alligator, he hides under the water until someone steps a little too close. |
Banegal | Between you and me, his striped camouflage seems a bit unnecessary considering he can turn invisible whenever he wants. |
You know, considering he can turn invisible whenever he wants, the striped camouflage seems a bit unnecessary. | |
Leoprank | His hunting method is simple but effective: he waits until somebody steps on him. |

And what a mess it is! If we don't do something about it, the ghosts might leave this valley and terrorize the world beyond! |

Now, I've got good news and I've got bad news. Wait here. |
Fortunately, I know where to start! Let me show you something. |
The good news is that I found a fragment of the Dark Moon nearby! But the bad news is that I found a fragment of the Dark Moon nearby, meaning the thing's broken. And this Dark Moon piece seems to be corrupted by some sort of energy... |

I analyse it and make notes on the ghosts, like...how many double-yoos of spectral mass they have! What, did you think ghosts would be measured in pounds and ounces? Ho ho! Of course not! Anyway, be sure to take a look and check your progress now and then. Knowledge is power, after all! |
OK, I'll scan the Gloomy Manor in search of paranormal signals. I reckon the ghost that took the other Dark Moon pieces is hiding in there. |

ScareScraper
In addition to the widespread differences affecting lots of game text, there are a few more specific to the ScareScraper:
- ScareScraper is called Thrill Tower (or, occasionally, simply Tower) in the European version.
- The North American version uses title case in many places that the European version uses sentence case; for example, Most Ghosts Captured in the North American version is Most ghosts captured in the European version.
- The North American version calls the floors either F1, F2, F3, and so on (or, sometimes, simply 1, 2, 3, etc.), whereas the European version calls them GF (ground floor), 1F, 2F, etc.
- The messages that Luigi can shout (Hey!, Help!, Thank you!, etc.) are enclosed in quotes in the North American version but not in the European version.
- A boss ghost in North America is simply a boss in Europe. Same with exit hatch and hatch.
Lines displaying only these differences have been removed from this article.

HP in the North American version is stamina in the European version. Additional differences:
