Magic: The Gathering Arena is a free-to-play version of the collectible trading card game, with significantly more flashy effects and audiovisual embellishments compared to Online.

Implied Cards

The game stores data about all the cards in the game within an SQL database, and some entries contain data referring to card treatments that don't exist on MTG Arena nor in paper Magic.

Ninja Style Krydle of Baldur's Gate

The "Ninja" style is listed under the "Known Supported Styles" section of the data for the card Krydle of Baldur's Gate. The Ninja frame was used exclusively on Ninja cards in the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty set, which makes the implication of it appearing on a Rogue card from the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms set unusal. There is a Japan-exclusive alternate art printing of Krydle of Baldur's Gate that currently does not appear in Arena, but that printing does not use the Ninja frame.

Original Art Doom Blade

Doom Blade is only accessible in-game in its alternate arts printed in Strixhaven Mystical Archive, but an entry exists for a printing of the card from the Magic 2014 set, which was the first set in which Doom Blade appeared at a rarity above common using its original art.

Unused Graphics

Several placeholder graphics and otherwise unused assets can be found in the game's files.

Battlefield Test
MTGArena-bf TEST.png

A simple wireframe laying out where various assets appear during matches.

Raptor Test
MTGArena-T Raptor test.png

A screenshot of a confusing amalgamation of raptor cards. The name and power/toughness box belong the the card Frenzied Raptor, but the art is from the card Raptor Hatchling. Looking closely at the bottom corners of the art, artist credit and copyright info can be seen on the image, which do not appear in the in-game or printed Raptor Hatchling art (but do appear on images of the card's art that can be found online). Both of the aforementioned cards are red, but the frame on the outside has been color-shifted to green, although a small sliver of reddish-orange remains in the bottom left. The blue T icons are used to indicate the location of text assets in the Unity editor, but the fact that they are all upside-down implies that this image was flipped after the screenshot was taken.

Addendums

MTGArena-T Addem 1.png

MTGArena-T Addem 2.png

MTGArena-T Addem 3.png

Three textures describing varying states of something being addendum-ed. Despite the apparent order of the words, the texture for "Addendum-ing" is marked with a 3 in the name, while "Addendum-ed" is marked with a 2.

Debug Token
MTGArena-Nav Token WhiteDebug.png

Tokens of various colors with this sprite are used to mark free entries into various in-game events, but the files also include a white "debug" token with an unknown purpose.

Hanger Box Placeholder
MTGArena-HangerBoxPlaceholder.png

The name of the texture seems to imply this is some sort of hanging textbox, but it's unclear where exactly it's supposed to hang.

Dev Close Button
MTGArena-dev close button.png

A simple X button likely used in developer menus.

Development Placeholder Assets

Based on the names of these graphics, they seem to be used as placeholders during development.

Debug Events Icon

MTGArena-DebugEventsIcon.png

This image uses the same frame shape as the icons for emblems that add new game rules during certain special events.

Set Logo Placeholder
MTGArena-SetLogo PLACEHOLDER.png

The first in a series of very magenta placeholder assets. This one is for a set's logo, written in the game's iconic Beleren font.

Mastery Pass Reward Placeholders
MTGArena-ObjectiveIcon Pack PLACEHOLDER.png MTGArena-ObjectiveIcon Pet PLACEHOLDER.png MTGArena-ObjectiveIcon Pet Orb PLACEHOLDER.png

These sprites are likely used as placeholders for various rewards on the game's mastery pass. Specifically, one for a booster pack, one for a companion, and one for both a mastery orb and a companion

Placeholder Booster Pack
MTGArena-BoosterPack Placeholder.png

This texture makes it abundantly clear that it's only a placeholder for a booster pack.

Placeholder Store Art
MTGArena-ProductPanel Bundle Placeholder.png

This texture is likely a placeholder for the art that appears behind the various bundles available in the store.

Placeholder Sleeve
MTGArena-CardBack Placeholder.png

This texture appears to be a placeholder for one of the game's sleeves that can replace the standard card back.

Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty Set Reward Placeholder
MTGArena-NEO SetReward Placeholder.png

Unlike the other placeholders, this one calls itself out as being specifically for NEO (The three-letter abbreviation for the set Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty).

Fallback Assets

These assets don't normally appear in-game, but are used as back-ups if a certain asset fails to load properly.

Missing Art
MTGArena-MissingArt.png

If the art for a card fails to load, this image is used instead. Fittingly, the art used in this image is originally from a card named "Totally Lost."

Set Symbols
MTGArena-ExpansionSymbol Fallback Common.png MTGArena-ExpansionSymbol Fallback Uncommon.png MTGArena-ExpansionSymbol Fallback Rare.png MTGArena-ExpansionSymbol Fallback Mythic.png

These boxes are used to replace a missing icon for the set symbol, and exist in colors for each rarity. In this "dev diary" video, the card Craw Wurm (which doesn't normally appear as a card like this) can be seen using the common fallback set symbol.

Future Set Placeholder Pack Icon
MTGArena-ObjectiveIcon Pack FutureSetPlaceholder.png

Hmmm...
To do:
is this really unused?

The name of this more professional-looking pack texture implies it's to be used as a placeholder for a pack icon from an upcoming set.

Unused Text

Hmmm...
To do:
The file these strings come from is extremely long; there are almost certainly more unused strings in it.

Several strings can be found in the game's files that were used for debugging or reference features of Magic: The Gathering not present in Arena.

Test/Placeholder Strings

Strings used for testing or as placeholders during development. Some of these messages are fully translated, while others simply repeat the English text for other languages. The database also contains a section for Traditional Chinese, however no messages use it, with the exception of a small handful of strings where the English version is copied to every language.

Depricated Strings

Some strings referenced functions that have been modified or removed from the game entirely, and those strings have been overwritten rather than removed from the code.

Text Notes
#Deprecated PromptMessage_GameStateMessage
#Deprecated PromptMessage_ActionsAvailableReq
#Deprecated PromptMessage_ChooseStarting
#Deprecated PromptMessage_Mulliganed These strings likely described old versions of Magic's mulligan rules, which were changed during Arena's open beta period.
#Deprecated PromptMessage_AcceptedHand
#Deprecated PromptMessage_ApplyPlaneswalkerRedirection This string likely guided the player through applying the "Planeswalker Redirection Rule", a game rule that was removed from Magic during Arena's closed beta period.
#Deprecated PromptMessage_PlaneswalkerUniqueness Similarly to above, this string likely referred to the "Planeswalker Uniqueness Rule", another game rule that was removed during Arena's closed beta.
#Deprecated PromptMessage_InvalidSelection
#Deprecated PromptMessage_InvalidOrdering
#Deprecated PromptMessage_MatchState

Card Types & Supertypes

Card types and supertypes not used on any cards in Arena due to only being used in casual formats not implemented on the platform (with the exception of World, which just hasn't been printed on a real card since 1996).
