Regional Differences

Hmmm...
To do:
Comparisons between the two English versions, as well as between them and direct translations of the original Japanese. The Evercade release also uses the Aeon Genesis version.

Data East Classic Collection

In 2017, Retro-Bit released the Data East Classic Collection, an unlicensed SNES cartridge that includes several Data East games. One of the featured games is a localized version of Magical Drop II done by the translation group Aeon Genesis. Even though the collection was licensed by G-MODE (One of the current rights holder of Data East), the cartridge itself is unlicensed by Nintendo.

Nintendo Switch Online

A previously-unreleased English localization that Data East had developed in 1996 was released on Nintendo Switch Online in 2021. Notably, all of the graphical and script alterations differ from the Data East Classic Collection translation.

The text box in the tutorial was made larger. Additionally, the text at the top of the mode select menu is animated in the Japanese version.

Misc.

  • All of the voices from the Japanese version were removed and replaced by four clips used throughout the English version.

Revisional Differences

In Japan, a Bunka Hōsō Special Version was released as a tie-in with Nippon Cultural Broadcasting. The main difference is that unlockable character Black Pierrot is replaced by the unlocked-by-default JOQR Team, which features some of the personalities on the station at the time.
