Marie & Elie no Atelier: Salburg no Renkinjutsushi 1 & 2 is an enhanced Dreamcast re-release of the first two Atelier games. It's one of the more well-known entries in the series... though this mostly stems from some unwanted additions to its data.

Bonus Content

Hmmm...
To do:
Get pictures and videos of the screensavers in action (preferably the ones that aren't infected!)

13 screensavers are stored in each disc's standard density area (for 26 files in total), and can be accessed by inserting the disc into a computer. Almost all of them are themed around the game's characters, with two serving as general art slideshows. A couple filenames are shared across discs, though they're not duplicates; every screensaver has unique graphics.

On the game disc are:

  • ENDERK.SCR
  • HALLESCH.SCR
  • KREIS.SCR
  • KUGEL.SCR
  • KYRIE.SCR
  • MARIE.SCR
  • MY.SCR
  • NATALIE.SCR
  • OYAJI.SCR
  • RUVEN.SCR
  • SCHIA.SCR
  • SCHWALBE.SCR
  • SLIDESHOW.SCR

And on the "omake" disc:

  • DAGLLAS.SCR
  • EISEL.SCR
  • ELIE.SCR
  • ENDERK.SCR
  • FLEA.SCR
  • HALLESCH.SCR
  • JULIKA.SCR
  • MILLCASSEE.SCR
  • MY.SCR
  • NORDIS.SCR
  • ROMAUGE.SCR
  • RUVEN.SCR
  • SLIDESHOW.SCR

You probably shouldn't run these screensavers, however. Not unless you have an uninfected copy of Marie & Elie no Atelier.

Revisional Differences

The initial version of Marie & Elie no Atelier came with a very nasty surprise; all 26 screensavers were infected with the Kriz computer virus. A silent infector that targeted computers running Windows 9x/NT/2000, Kriz would activate on December 25th by wiping every single drive attached to the PC, as well as its CMOS and BIOS (borrowing the same routines used by the then-recent CIH virus).

Five days after Marie & Elie no Atelier's release, Kool Kizz would issue a statement about the infected discs, warning its customers not to run the screensavers and offering anti-virus tools for those who did. In addition, Kool Kizz would post clean versions of the screensavers on their site, and issue updated discs for people who returned their infected games (as well as for future retail copies).

To figure out if your copy of Marie & Elie no Atelier contains the Kriz virus, please refer to the following chart:

Disc Version no. Files' "last modified" date Mastering code CRC-32
Game Disc (infected) V1.006 September 19th, 2001 T-44701M-0720 2MM1 C 1X C3B6B026
Omake Disc (infected) V1.005 September 19th, 2001 T-44701M-0721 1MM1 C 1X FC8DD6D8
Game Disc (clean) V2.000 October 9th, 2001 T-44701M-0720A 10MM1 C 1Y 76A84FC1
Omake Disc (clean) V2.000 October 9th, 2001 T-44701M-0721A 10MM1 C 1Y FDFF2FE0

Modern versions of Windows are reportedly unaffected by the Kriz virus, and other operating systems are outright immune to it. Even then, it is highly advised that you do not extract and/or run the original infected files! The Cutting Room Floor is not responsible for any loss of data and/or destroyed computers brought on by infected Atelier screensavers.
