An early English script is present on the Japanese disk in file /message/mesRes_eng.szs. It's very much incomplete -- This is 26.6 KB while the final game's script is 122 kb -- and seems to be a direct translation of a Japanese script.

Louie's Notes
Louie found better ways to cook some creatures, so he replaced his old notes with his better ones.

Names

Almost all object / area names were changed for the final version. Several enemy names were also changed.

The most interesting change here is the Treasure Anteanna to Napsack. The Treasure Anteanna was changed to the Sulking Antenna in the final game. In early treasure packs, the model was present in radar_b.szs, which is used in the final game by...the Napsack! So, this text file is actually based on an earlier version of the game.

Cutscene Text

Text and cutscenes, together at long last.

Opening Scene

Early Final
There he was aided by indigenous
creatures which he called Pikmin.
There, he was aided by
indigenous creatures which he
called Pikmin.

Spacing changes to get the text to actually fit on screen.

Early Final
In the end, Capt. Olimar escaped.
He returned home...
In the end, Captain Olimar
escaped...

Probably changed because Captain Olimar never actually went home.

Return to The Planet

Early Final
Thanks to you, our company has
been saved!

What?!? There's still more
treasure?
Thanks to you, our company has
been saved! Hurrah!

What?!? There's still more
treasure? ...Good gravy!

The script was spiced up a bit in the final game.

Early Final
He's not here!

What?! You lost him?

In that case...

I will go!
...Where's Louie?

What?!? You lost him?

In that case...

I shall go!

Slight rewording and such.

Louie is Rescued

Early Final
Louie?
...
...

...
Are you dying?
...

No! He appears only to have
fainted! He is always running
into trouble and fainting.

Instruct the Pikmin to carry him.
There is not enough room for him
in the cockpit.

We will have to keep him in the
cargo hold with the treasure.
Louie?
...
...

...
Are your life functions fading?
...

No! He appears only to have
fainted! He is always running
into trouble...

Instruct the Pikmin to carry him.
There is not enough room for him
in the cockpit anymore.

We will have to keep him in the
cargo hold with the treasure
hoard.

The main difference here is some minor censorship. The explicit reference to dying was softened a bit.

Challenge Mode Key

Early Final
You have found a suspicious
object! My analysis suggests it is
a key to the next floor!

And yet, this shape...
Have I not seen it before?
Clearly I must be mistaken.
You have found a remarkable
object! My analysis concludes it
is a key to the next floor!

It looks oddly familiar..
Have I observed it before?
Perhaps I am mistaken.

There's a bit more doubt in the ship's statements in the final script.

Olimar's Notes

Red Bulborb

Early Final
Red Bulborb
Oculus kageyamii ssp RED
Grub-dog family
This large organism has the
mandibles and cranial morphology
of the grub-dog family, as well as
the characteristic bulging eyes.
As with most grub-dogs, its
cranium comprises half of the
organism's length and girth.
Showing a scarlet abdomen with
white spots, this creature is
primarily nocturnal, choosing to
prey upon smaller creatures
returning to their nests.
Subspecies of different colors
have recently been discovered,
and academics are split into two
main schools over how to handle
treatment of them.
Red Bulborb
Oculus kageyamii russus
Grub-dog family
This large organism has the
familiar mandibles and cranial
morphology of the grub-dog
family, as well as the
characteristic bulging eyes.
As with most grub-dogs, the
creature's cranium comprises
half of its total length and girth.
Showing a scarlet abdomen with
white spots, this creature is
primarily nocturnal, choosing to
prey upon smaller creatures
returning to their nests.
Originally classified as the
spotty bulborb, further research
has reclassified this species
as the red bulborb. Subspecies
of varied colors have recently
been discovered, but academics
are divided into two rival camps
over how to handle their
classification.

The renaming of the Red Bulborb to Spotty Bulborb is not mentioned at all in the early script. The temporary scientific name was replaced (that's why it's called temporary) in the final game. Other than that, just a bit of rewording and spell checking.

Dwarf Red Bulborb

Early Final
Dwarf Red Bulborb
Pansarus Psuedooculii RED
Breadbug Family
Initially identified as a juvenile red
bulborb, recent research places
this creature in the breadbug.
A close relative of the vanilla
breadbug, it escapes predation
by bulborbs through mimicry.
Unique adaptation of the red
bulbord's crimson coloration
allows the species to comingle.
Such effective adaptation by a
prey species is rare, making this
a cleverly skillful mimc.
Dwarf Red Bulborb
Pansarus pseudoculii russus
Breadbug family
Although initially identified
as a juvenile red bulborb,
groundbreaking new research
indicates that this creature
is in fact a member of the
breadbug family. A close relative
of the vanilla breadbug, it
escapes predation through
mimicry. Unique adaptation of
the red bulborb's crimson
coloration allows the species to
safely commingle. Such effective
adaptation and obfuscation by a
prey species is rare, indicating
this clever creature is a master
of mimicry.

The Dwarf Red Bulborb's description was punched up, and several spelling errors were fixed. The early script goes back and forth on whether or not to capitalize every part of the scientific name. In the final version, only the first part is capitalized.

Spotty Bulbear

Early Final
Spotty Bulbear
Oculus terribilis
Grubu-dog family
A mid-size subspecies within the
grub-dog family, what sets it
apart from other grub-dogs is
that rather than adopt the
passive feeding habits of typical
grub-dogs and hunting only on
prey that wanders into its limited
territorial range, the bulbear
appears to regularly patrol a set
track in search of food. When
entering bulbear habitat, it is
wisest to proceed with extreme
caution until the bulbear's
patrol path can be identified.
Spotty Bulbear
Oculus terribilis dotticum
Grub-dog family
A midsize subspecies within the
grub-dog family, the spotty
bulbear's unique feeding habits
set it apart from other
grub-dogs. The spotty bulbear
patrols a set path searching for
prey, instead of passively
feeding on creatures that wander
into a limited territorial range.
When entering bulbear habitat,
it is wise to proceed with
extreme caution until the
bulbear's patrol path can be
clearly identified.

The final game has an extra scientific identifier, "Dotticum". Some standard spelling and grammar fixes, along with rewording to make the text flow better. Unlike that last sentence.

Dwarf Bulbear

Early Final
Dwarf Bulbear
Oculus terribilis
Grub-dog family
A grub-dog larva in its third
stage of development, its body
structure is nearing maturation.
However, unlike mature bulbear's
it has yet to claim its own patrol
route, and thus is dependent
and still follows its parent.

stage of development, this
creature's body structure is
nearing maturation. However,
unlike mature bulbears, it has yet
to claim its own patrol route, and
thus is dependent upon its parent
for guarding direction.

This is basically the same. Yep.

Bulborb Larva

Early Final
Bulborb Larva
Oculus bambinii
Grub-dog Family
As its name inplies, this is a
bulborb at its earliest stage of
development.
Its distinct bulborb coloration is
yet to appear, but it already
boasts other bulborb
characteristics, and is capable of
acquiring nourishment indepently.
Bulborb Larva
Oculus bambinii
Grub-dog family
As its name implies, this
creature is a bulborb in an early
stage of development. Its
distinct bulborb coloration has
yet to appear, but it already
exhibits other uniquely bulborb
characteristics. It is capable
of hunting nourishment
independently without the help
of its parents.

The final script no longer inplies. The early script refers to this as the earliest stage, while the final uses the more vague "early stage" for the bulborb's development.

Fiery Bulblax

Early Final
Fiery Bulblax
Oculus volcano
Grub-dog family
Bodily excretions of a highly
flammable wax-like substance
interact with the cell structure
of this grub-dog's skin, causing a
chemical reaction that produces
extremely high temperatures. The
skin benefits from a sponge-like
cell structure that diffuses the
surface heat, protecting the inner
organs. Due to the remarkble
flames and heat produced by this
beast, great caution is needed in
handling it.

amount of heat produced by this
beast, it should be observed with
great caution.

Besides the standard changes, the creature's scientific name was changed from Oculus volcano to Oculus vulcanus.

Water Dumple

Early Final
Water Dumple
Ichthyosa felinis
Grub-dog family
A resident of tidepools and
marshes, this creature feeds on
insects that fall into the water.
It is a close relative of the
bulborb, with the skeletal
structure of its terrestrial
cousin nearly wholly intact
offering clues to its familial
origin and suggesting it only
recently emmigrated to the
waterways.
Water Dumple
Ichthyosa felinis
Grub-dog family
A resident of freshwater pools
and marshes, this aquatic
creature regularly feeds on
insects that land on the surface
of the water. It shares a nearly
identical skeletal structure with
its close relative and terrestrial
cousin, the bulborb. This may
offer clues to its evolutionary
origin and suggests that it only
recently emigrated to an
aquatic habitat.

"Tidepools" changed to "freshwater pools", plus other changes blah blah.

Fiery Blowhog

Early Final
Fiery Blowhog
Sus draconus
Blowhog family
This creature expels from its
snout a phosphorous compound
that combusts upon contact with
air. This fire-breathing is
dependant upon the air-to-fuel
ratio at the mouth, catalyst
reaction of the expelled
compound, and purification of
the compound. Thus it is highly
unlikely such a complex process
could cause the spontaneous
explosion of a fallen blowhog.
(This process is also perhaps to
avoid risk of spontaneous
combustion in the belly of a
live specimen.) However, one
should still treat a fiery blowhog
with great care, even after its
life functions have ceased.

Like the Spotty Bulbear, this is pretty much the same between scripts.

Watery Blowhog

Early Final
Spitty Blowhog
Sus loogiens
Blowhog Family
A variant sub-species of the
fiery blowhog, the spitty blowhog
lacks several of the genes
necessary for prducing the
catalyst needed to produce fire,
and thus merely spits out the
basic liquid prouced several steps
prior to being transformed into a
catalyzer. It is a variant that has
appeared only recently, but the
hereditary traits of this variant
appear dominant, and thus at
present the subspecies is rapidly
increasing its numbers.
Watery Blowhog
Sus loogiens
Blowhog family
A variant subspecies of the
fiery blowhog, the watery
blowhog lacks several of the
dominant genes necessary for
the production of fire-
producing catalysts, and thus
expels jets of the
nonflammable liquid. This
subspecies appears to have
only recently evolved. However,
the hereditary traits of this
variant are dominant and highly
robust, so its population is
rapidly increasing.

The liquid that the Watery Blowhog expels is given greater detail in the early script.

Puffy Blowhog

Early Final
Puffy Blowhog
Sus inflata
Blowhog Family
This species of blowhog uses
internally generated hydrogen to
inflate a flotation bladder and
hover above the ground.
The creature's electrolyzed pulse
creates a sash of color that
flows along the surface of
its body, making it a particulalry
beautiful blowhog specimen.
Precisely how it is able to
internally stable its highly
explosive hydrogen and
simultaneously generate
electricty remains a mystery.
The puffy blowhog blows fallen
leaves and grass around to eat
the insects underneath.
It maintains mid-air balance
through both the use of fins and
by releasing air through
blowholes in the creatures sides,
allowing it to float effortlessly
even in gentle breezes. In times
danger, it can release its
flotation bladder for an
instantaneous escaped from
trouble.

It maintains midair buoyancy
by using its fins and releasing air
through blowholes. This enables
it to float effortlessly, even in
the breeze. In times of danger,
the puffy blowhog can
decompress its flotation bladder
for a rapid escape from
predators.

The incorrect "electrolyzed" was changed to "electrified". The early script gives a definite location to where the creature's blowholes are.

Withering Blowhog

Early Final
Withering Blowhog
Sus decrepitia
Blowhog Family
While a close relative of the
puffy blowhog, its breath is
significantly weaker, but does
contain petal-withering ethylene-
like plant hormone, causing all
flowers that come in contact
with its breath to immediately
lose their petals. Although its
breath has not been studied in
detail, analysis of the chemical
compounds involved hold great
promise for the biotechnology
sector.

flowers to instantly lose their
petals. Although its breath has
not been studied in detail,

sector.

The description of the petal-withering hormone as "ethylene-like" does not appear in the final script.

Empress Bulblax

Early Final
Queen Bulborb
Oculus matriarhca
grub-dog family
Initial observations placed doubt
on the capability of the grub-dog
family to support a strong ant or
bee-like social structure, but
recent studies show the family is
capable of such complexity,
with the egg sack of the largest
female grub-dog within a given
range swelling to dramatic
proportions in response to
environmental changes, such as
sudden depletion of prey species.
These females temporarily take
on the role of pack matriarch.
Also, upon pack formation it has
been observed that nearly all
males not involved in species
reproduction undergo natural sex
changes. The characerstics of
such specimens are quite
intriguing indeed.

A lot of typos in the early script were fixed. Note that although the assigned name for this creature is still Empress Bulblax in the early script, it's referred to as Queen Bulborb in this description.

Emperor Bulblax

Early Final
Emperor Bulblax
Oculus supremus
Grub-dog family
The largest member of the
grub-dog family, the emperor
bulblax is normally found
poised burrowed deep into the
ground. Such camoflouge allows
the creature to surprise smaller
creatures as they pass by and
prey upon them with its long,
adhesive toungue. Its hide is
quite thick and angular at the
hump, with a rock-like quality.
When the rainy season comes,
spurring the growth of moss,
it is nearly impossible to
distinguish the beast's back from
any garden variety of stone.

This description has some pretty bad typos -- "camoflouge"? -- and the most Engrish of any of the early enemy descriptions.

The made-up word "stabilitology" was changed to "stabilotomy", because...hey, look over there! The first not was also removed.

Space Wave Receiver

A most interesting change, and more evidence that this script was based on an early version of the game. In the final, escaping through the pause menu will abandon all treasure the player has found up to that point. In the early game, the player would keep half their treasure in exchange for losing all Pikmin brought into the cave!
