This is a sub-page of Pokémon Crystal.

Overview

When the game first released, Japanese players could connect their Game Boy Color to their mobile phone using a special adapter cable, which let them access a wireless network. This system, called the Mobile System GB, offered a handful of gameplay changes, alongside new options, for just a small fee. However, the service was ultimately shut down in December 2002, leaving a lot of things unused in its wake.

Of note is that while this accessory and related network was never brought overseas, some aspects of it were later incorporated in the base localized versions. The rest remains mostly broken, and though a good amount of text was actually translated it remains severely incomplete.

Access

In-game, the Mobile System GB's functionalities are only accessible after the player hands the Mystery Egg to Professor Elm. This is identical to the requirements needed to access the standard Link Cable functionalities. Connecting to the system enables the "Mobile" and "Mobile Stadium" options on the continue screen, activates the PokéCom Center's Trade Corner and News Machines, and lets the player access the Battle Tower.

Splash Screen

PokémonCrystal-MobileSplash.png

Once connected, this splash screen appears before the copyright screen. The text translates to "Checking Mobile Adapter" (モバイルアダプタをチェックしています).

Mobile Menu

Shown as "MOBILE" (モバイル) on the main menu. Can be accessed with GameShark code 010468CF (Japanese version) or 010576CF (localized versions).

The Card Folder is a predecessor to the Pal Pad later introduced in Generation IV, with both of them letting one create friend lists and edit their own Trainer Card.

  • The "NAME CARD" option lets you check your own card. Detailed on there are your name (なまえ), phone number (でんわ ばんごう), as well as your ID number and battle message (the latter of which which can be entered in the "Greetings" menu option). The only thing you can change is your phone number, via the use of a number pad. The "Erase" (けす) key can be used by either selecting it, or by using B. Once the array is empty, it will take you out of the pad screen, just like the "Back" (やめる) key. The text at the bottom translates to "Phone Number Entry" (でんわばんごう にゅうりょく).

PokémonCrystal-NameCardIR.pngPokémonCrystal-NameCardIREnglish.png

  • The "CARD TRADE" option lets one exchange Name Cards with their friends through the Game Boy Color's Infra-Red sensor. This is the same system used by the Mystery Gift, and the explanatory blurb seen on this screen is even the same as the Mystery Gift one. However, the Card Trade blurb is a separate copy of it, and since said copy wasn’t translated in the localizations, only garbled text remains.

  • Deleting the whole Name Card folder is possible from the main mobile menu after registering to it at least once.

Greetings

This option lets one create a message which can be displayed when interacting with other players via the mobile adapter. Just like in modern games in the series, the player gets to choose words from a set of lists, split between different categories.

Profile

This screen lets one set up their very own basic ID card, and it had some translation work done, with only the prefecture list not being localized. To confirm the data inputted, simply hit "けってい" (localized as "OK").

  • The Age (ねんれい) setting can be incremented one by one with Up (decremented with Down), with 0 as the minimum and 100 as the maximum. Left can be used to increment the number by 10, with Right used to decrement by 10. This option's description is "How old are you?" (いま なんさい ですか?).
  • The Address (じゅうしょ) setting brings up a list of Japanese prefectures once selected. This option's description is "Where do you live?" (いま なんさい ですか?). Up and Down are used to navigate the area list, with Left and Right used to skip ahead. Said list is as follows:

  • The Zip Code (ゆうびんばんごう) is pretty self explanatory. Left and Right are used to highlight a number. Up is used to increment the number, and Down to decrement. This option's description is "Your zip code?" (ゆうびんばんごうを おしえてください). When trying to change the previously inputted zip code, selecting it will bring up two options: "Tell Now" (いまおしえる) and "Tell Later" (あとでおしえる).

Mobile Stadium

In the Japanese version, this feature can be used to send data of timed mobile battles to the Japanese version of Pokémon Stadium 2 via the Transfer Pak, which is then converted into a battle video. The Vs. Recorder item in modern Pokémon games provides similar functionality.

Like the Mobile menu, the "MOBILE STADIUM" (モバイルスタジアム) feature was disabled internationally, and it suffers from the same incomplete translation issues. Can be accessed with GameShark code 010576CF (localized versions), or by setting save file address $E000 to a nonzero value (Japanese version). In the English versions, its entry on the menu was accidentally translated as "MOBILE STUDIUM".

English revision 1.1 and the European languages have a glitched background due to an unintentional LF→CRLF/CR→CRLF conversion.

PokéCom Center

Trade Corner

PokémonCrystal-TradeCorner.png

The Trade Corner serves as the precursor to the GTS, a staple from newer entries in the series. Here, a player could deposit their Pokémon, offering them for trade in exchange for a given Pokémon. You could even specify if the Pokémon you wanted was Male (♂オス), Female (♀メス), or Either (どちらでも). However, you could only ask for a Pokémon which had already been registered as "Seen" in your Pokédex. Offered Pokémon are listed as "あげるポケモン", and Desired Pokémon as "ほしいポケモン".

News Machine

PokémonCrystal-NewsMachine.pngPokémonCrystal-NewsMachineQuizz1.pngPokémonCrystal-NewsMachineQuizz2.png

The Pokémon News Machine is a terminal which, when used, would compile a database of your achievements, with other trainers' "news" also available for viewing. For example, from the News Machine one could see how many wild Pokémon they caught, the numbers of trainer battles they partook in, or even how many times they used Fly in the overworld. The other appeal to the News Machine is how it offered quizzes, with them being updated monthly.

Pokémon Center 2F

PokemonC JP Trading Screen Mobile.pngPokemonC US Trading Screen Mobile.png

A Mobile System GB connection lets one access the two extra doors in the second floor of every Pokémon Center. These doors lead to the "Mobile Trade" and "Mobile Colosseum" rooms. Mobile battles are mostly the same as normal battles, except that they are limited to three Pokémon, and that one can only fight for a maximum of 10 minutes per day. As for mobile trades, they come with their own updated interface (which was actually adapted in the localized games, despite never being seen). The trading animation itself is also completely different, instead depicting the Pokémon traveling across the adapter cable, before being shot out into the air.
