Sound Test

Pokémon Ruby sound test 1.png

Code for a sound test menu exists at offset 0xBA0EC in Ruby 1.0 (U) and 0xB54F8 in Ruby 1.0 (J).

The following GameShark code can be used to replace the Options menu with the Sound Test menu in all revisions of Ruby (U) and Ruby (J):

EBD52168 6CD6F8B7
FB9F6A87 8F5AC4A7

6501054A 6E144DD3
388E7ED7 BE45E785
5E99600C 6F4FD6C6

The main screen of the sound test allows you to play almost any music track or sound effect in the game, save for Pokémon cries. The controls are below:

  • Up & Down: Switch between BGM and SE (SFX).
  • Left & Right: Switch between tracks.
  • A: Play track.
  • B: Exit to the title screen.

To do:
Identify the remaining sound effects, and determine which ones are unused.
Pokémon Ruby sound test 2.png

Sound effects can be played on the main screen, but pressing L will bring up a special interface for sound effect playback, seen at right.

  • A: Play sound effect.
  • B: Return to the main sound test menu.
  • Left & Right: Select sound effect.
  • L & R: Switch between 5 panning options - 63 (full right), -64 (full left), 0 (center), LR (transition left to right), and RL (transition right to left).

The Japanese text translates to "Now playing..."

Driver Test

Pokémon Ruby sound test 3.png

Pressing R on the main screen brings up the “DRIVER-TEST”, which is an interface for playing and manipulating Pokémon cries.

The "Voice" option allows you to select a Pokémon cry. Cries 1–251 are those of Pokémon from previous generations, in Pokédex order. Cries 252–388 are those of Hoenn Pokémon, except for cries 266 and 269, which are unused.

  • Up & Down: Move the cursor between options.
  • A: Select a cry.
  • B: Return to the main sound test menu.
  • Left & Right: Adjust values in increments of 1.
  • L & R: Adjust values in increments of 10.
  • Select: Toggle stereo mode on/off.
  • Start: Toggle reverse mode on/off. Plays the cry backwards.

Sound Meter

Pokémon Ruby sound test 4.png

Pressing Start on the main screen loads a sound meter. Unlike the Driver Test described above, this screen only allows cries 1 to 384 to be played. This excludes the cries belonging to Latios, Jirachi, Deoxys, and Chimecho.

  • Up & Down: Select a Pokémon cry.
  • A: Play a cry.
  • B: Return to the main sound test menu.

Pokéblock Test

Pokémon Ruby Pokéblock test 1.png
Pokémon Ruby Pokéblock test 2.png

Code for a Pokéblock test menu exists at offset 0x524BC in Ruby 1.0 (U) and 0x4F740 in Ruby 1.0 (J).

To replace the Options menu with the Pokéblock test, do the following:

  • Ruby 1.0 (U): Write BD240508 to ROM offset 0x9F94.
  • Ruby 1.0 (J): Write 41F70408 to ROM offset 0x7598.

The numbers shown next to each Berry are a decimal representation of its flavors (Spicy, Dry, Sweet, Bitter, Sour) and smoothness. The numbers shown next to the Pokéblock are a hexadecimal representation of its color, flavors, and feel.

The controls are below:

  • Up & Down: Move cursor.
  • Left & Right: Switch between berries.
  • L & R: Adjust BPM (known as RPM in the final game) in increments of 10.
  • A: Generate a Pokéblock based on the above settings.
  • B: Return to the main sound test menu.

Removed Debug Menu

Text strings for a debug menu which seems to have been removed (even from the German prototype ROM!) appear at 0x20C348.
