Development Timeline

1999

  • August - "beatmania GB 2" appears at Spaceworld, with a planned release date of November 25.
  • Summer/Fall - the game's release is delayed into the new year.

2000

  • Spring - the game appears in magazines around this time, now called "beatmania GB Net Jam" (ビートマニアGB ネットジャム).
  • August 24-26 - the game appears again at Spaceworld, now under its final name and with various features touted during the Net Jam period (see below) removed.
  • September 28 - beatmania GB: Gotcha Mix 2 is released.

beatmania GB Net Jam Era

Unique to this iteration was compatibility for Nintendo/Mobile21's now-defunct Mobile System GB service. This was a service for downloading content, online multiplayer, mailing, and Nintendo news using a Japanese mobile phone with the Mobile GB Adapter peripheral for Game Boy Color.

The Mobile System GB features in Net Jam included downloadable songs and a "Beat Mail" messaging service, the latter of which would only be available after clearing a given song. For whatever reason, the mobile features were removed by the time of the game's appearance at Spaceworld 2000.
