This page details prerelease information and/or media for Deja Vu (Mac OS Classic).

Preview shots of Deja Vu appeared in at least two publications.

  • There was an extra command, "Look Inside", whose function was folded into "Open". The original Open and Close may only have applied to things like doors.
  • The Special menu wasn't dimmed while the game window was active.
  • It's hard to make out, but the driver appears to be asking you: "Where to, Mac?" The meta-humor of the computer calling you "Mac" was retained for Pete the gun seller.
  • Ace's trench coat was once a "flannel jacket".
  • The cab door moved from the bottom of the Exits window to the side.

MacUser, November 1985

  • The text window in these preview shots uses New York 10. The game shipped with a selection of seven font sizes, including New York 9 and 12 but not 10.
  • This room description was much more basic:

You're standing on the street by a woman. A woman comes out of nowhere. She says, "It's been a long time. I just got out of prison. I wanted to pay our old friend Siegel a visit, but I only found his car out front so I prepared a little surprise under the hood, something to even the score. I got a little surprise in my purse for you, too!"

Did you have to interact with Sugar Shack to get her attention? Or was the text altered especially for this preview to avoid spoiling the car bomb?

  • The bar's front window moved up and to the right.
  • The Mercedes' trunk was made more prominent.
  • The shadow under the car was removed.
  • Most curiously, the prerelease text window displays the game's opening paragraph, with minor differences:

You are waking from a stupor that feels like a chronic hangover after a week in Vegas. There is a throbbing bump on the back of your head, big enough to make your hat size look like an Olympic record. You notice your right palm is covered with dried blood, and you neither see nor feel any open wounds on your body, but on your left forearm you feel a sharp pain under the shirt sleeve. Rolling up the sleeve, you [...] You are waking from a stupor that feels like a chronic hangover after a week in Vegas. Maybe this prototype had scrollback that went much further, or stayed persistent across reloads. Maybe, again, the photo was staged or the onscreen content Photoshopped MacPainted. Any of these is more likely than the game actually beginning out in the street, especially at this late point in development.
