The NES version originally had a different English script that was closer to the Famicom version than the rewritten version included in the retail release. The text in the early screenshot reads:

 BILLY WENT ON A
 JOURNEY TO COMPLETE
 HIS MARTIAL ARTS.

This text matches with what's seen in the prototype.
