Mugshots

The official Japanese website contains early versions of the character mugshots. Peach's mugshot is similar to Mario Kart 64.

Nintendo 64 '98~'99 New Software Catalogue

The earliest known footage of the game, present at 6:14 in the video at right.

  • The game is known as "Mario Board" at this point, featuring a completely different logo in English. There's also a "(temporary)" kanji superimposed under the logo.
  • The title screen itself has a different animation, with the logo flying into the screen before landing on the top. The final game shows a Star flying into the screen before ribbons and the text fall onto it as it leaves the screen, before coming back down as a texture.
  • The characters have landing sounds for when they land from the pipe.
  • All of the character mugshots are the same ones found on the official website except Peach, who has the same angle as the website one but without her hands showing.
  • When Mario (and likely all other characters) gets a Star, their portrait briefly depicts a happy expression! Unfortunately, this was scrapped for the final game and has not made a comeback in any subsequent Mario Party game.
  • Speaking of the mugshots, they're more rounded than the final ones.
  • The numbers after rolling the dice remain large as the players move, rather than shrinking down in size like in the final.
  • There were no pathways in the maps to show where the player would go, with the exception of DK's Jungle Adventure.
  • Toad has a completely different model, looking closer to the models found in Bomberman 64, also made by Hudson.
  • After buying a Star, its sound effect for flying into the player's possession is different - it's the same one used at the end of the board, when all the Stars combine into one.
  • The timer in Bobsled Run is a simple white, and one is present for each team. The record time is missing.
  • The explosion graphic in Bombsketball is not present. Instead, small yellow bits of shrapnel fly out.
  • There are no arrow signs in Yoshi's Tropical Island.
  • Bowser is placed a bit earlier in DK's Jungle Adventure. The gap in-between the two red spaces is present, which might mean that the trigger spot was already set there.
  • Toad's overworld pre-render seems to be different from the final.
  • The arrow sign after the Whomp is missing.

Slot Car Derby

The rare 1998 CD-ROM Nintendo Daijiten Vol. 1 contains an early screenshot of the Slot Car Derby minigame with a "Marioro" sign, a holdover from the Japanese Mario Kart 64. The final Mario Party changed it to the Nintendo logo.
