The game was simply called "Mario Tennis" during production, but was changed to "Mario Power Tennis" probably because there were already two "Mario Tennis" games.

Wapeach

Hmmm...
To do:
  • Find out if Wapeach's model is still left in the game's files.
  • See if it's possible to find archived versions of the Instagram posts, comments included, before Aoki closed his account. Currently, the only backup for the comments comes from citations on Super Mario Wiki.

Wapeach, a scrapped character from Mario Tennis, was originally considered to be given another shot at a playable spot, getting a proper design and even a finished 3D model this time around. However, she ended up getting scrapped again; according to a comment by Aoki on his Instagram page, the second rejection was due to a lack of characters to pair her with during doubles matches.

This iteration of her design was first publicized through character designer Fumihide Aoki's Instagram account, with separate posts for her concept art and 3D models; both posts were deleted and Aoki's account was closed the following day. Various comments by Aoki on the posts indicated that Wapeach would've "[defied] everyone's expectations in a good way," bossing around Wario & Waluigi, viewing Peach as her rival, and having a fiery temper. Aoki additionally mentioned that he considered the idea of making Wapeach "a descendant of a fallen royal family" and thought about making a draconian counterpart to Yoshi as a sidekick for her. An annotation in the concept sketch indicates that「ワルピーチ」(Warupīchi) and「プリーチ」(Purīchi) were both considered as possible names for her.
