March 2002 Build

A few images from March 2002 were distributed through E3 Press kits and some footage from around this time was shown in one of the first trailers. At this point in development, the game was very different compared to what it would become in retail.

  • Character icons were missing.
  • The text used for the name of the fighters was in a different font and color.
  • The spear was missing from the fighting style text.
  • The health bar looked far less polished.
  • Shang Tsung, Kung Lao and Sub-Zero's names were together instead of being spaced apart.
  • The word "ALT" can be seen beside Cyrax's name when he was using his alternate costume.
  • Blood was not implemented yet.
  • The Kuatan Palace arena had different lighting.
  • The fighter sound effects were completely different.
  • Shang Tsung had the Tai Chi fighting style.
  • Scorpion had the Snake and Crane fighting styles.

  • Scorpion had the Broadsword as his weapon.
  • Jax had the Tae Kwon Do fighting style.
  • Quan Chi's Fortress had banners that were colored differently and windows that were translucent.
  • Kenshi was referred to as Blind Gi.
  • Kung Lao's alternate costume was used as his primary.
  • All fighters who used the Tai Chi stance had their heads turned to face their opponent (in the final game, Kenshi faces the same direction as his chest when using this stance).

May 2002 Trailer

This is a trailer that was shown at E3 2002. The footage is not from the build demoed at the event, but rather a random build that was probably made somewhere between April 2002 and May 2002. The game was now updated to be much closer to what would it looked like in the retail version. It also had many of the same differences as the March 2002 trailer whilst having more of its own.

  • The fighter name text was different.
  • Character icons were added.
  • Scorpion's icon was being used as placeholder for fighters that did not have one yet. This can be seen at the beginning of the trailer with Mavado.
  • Li Mei had a different icon.
  • Kenshi's name was still Blind Gi, though his icon obscures the i.
  • Mavado had a different look.
  • Blood had been added.
  • The wall splat effect can be seen even though Blind Gi was not near a wall.
  • Combo damage text had been added and used a different font and animation than retail.
  • Scorpion had the katana as his weapon.
  • Sub-Zero had the straight sword as his weapon.
  • Shang Tsung had the staff as his weapon.
  • Quan Chi had only one broadsword and used Kung Lao's animations.
  • Shang Tsung and Sub Zero's names were still not spaced apart.
  • The fighters had different fighting styles.

  • The male characters all shared the same voice actor as opposed to multiple actors being used for the final game.
  • Reptile used a voice actor whilst he just uses animal sound effects in the final game.
  • Johnny Cage's Stuntball special move had a different sound effect when performed.
  • Kitana had a katana as her weapon.
  • Kung Lao and Drahmin had staffs as their weapons.

TGS 2002 Build

A demo build for an intended Japanese release was shown off at the 2002 Tokyo Game Show as part of KOEI's booth, alongside other Midway titles that were planned for release there, as KOEI were distributors for Midway's short-lived Japanese division. It was likely cancelled due to its gory content.

  • Music and most sound effects were missing from Test Your Might.
  • Additionally, the HUD for Test Your Might was different and text for the item to be broken and the amount of koins the player could win was not displayed.
  • The fight text was 3D before being changed into a 2D texture for retail.
  • Scorpion had a different taunt stance.
  • The taunt and power-up sound effect was different.
  • Shang Tsung's Palace was known as just Shang Palace in this build.
  • The arcade ladder music was longer and did not fade out.
  • There was no crowd in the background for Drum Arena.

Manual Build

A couple of screenshots from a near-final build were included in the manual for the PlayStation 2 release. The other ports had screenshots from the retail version in their manuals.

  • Originally only nine characters were going to be unlocked by default on the roster. One of them was Jax, who would later needed to be unlocked in the Krypt. Li Mei, Sonya, Kenshi and Kano are among the locked characters rather than starters.
  • Mavado and Raiden had icons that differed from what ended up appearing in the retail roster.
  • Every character on the roster was positioned differently.
  • There were ten training missions for Konquest at this point in development. This would later be cut down to only eight.
  • The HUD for the mini games was still different, but text for the item to be broken and the amount of koins that could be earned was added.
