  • [1/7/2020] The Discord server went under some changes a while back, erasing 1 / 5th of samples and general progress posted in #talkzone. If anyone has preview and early content from that channel (screenshots, sprites, audio, or anything that is different from any playable builds), please post it in the subpages below.

With 90% of the game's development being in full view of the public, many mechanic revisions, work in progresses, unused assets, scrapped music, and thousands of hours of progress were streamed online, the list is seemingly endless.

Timeline

2017

  • November 23rd - McPig, the game's lead developer, started posting clips on Tumblr on a game using hand-drawn pixel animations. It went under a few working titles, such as Weenie Cop, Wiener Don't Use Drugs and Hot Force. Progress would be irregularly posted.

2018

  • March 6th - The final update about Weenie Cop was posted.
  • March 13th - McPig announced in a Tumblr post that Weenie Cop was cancelled as he wasn't feeling like the mechanics were coming together well. In the same post, he announced a different game that he had sketched up while away from his computer, titled The Leaning Tower of Pizza and included some pieces of concept art.
    • On the same day in another post, he uploaded the game's very first footage. Irregular updates for this game would continue.
  • March 20th - The name Pizza Tower was first used, and since then became the game's name.
  • March 28th - A showcase of the first level was shown, along with a commissioned Wario Land 4 rendition of Dim Widdy's Funiculi Funicula. This track would become the tutorial theme before it was redone by Mr. Sauceman.
  • June 2nd - Mr. Sauceman got in contact with McPig, sending him a demo track of what would become It's Pizza Time.
  • June 17th - The Pizza Tower Discord was opened, with development updates on Tumblr slowing down.
  • July 15th - The first release of Early Test Build released. The link was taken down the same day due to the demo being buggy.
  • October 23rd - A Halloween demo was announced with people being asked to submit their original characters to be included in a dance party room.
  • October 31st - The Halloween demo released.
  • November 12th - A Kickstarter was announced with a new demo that would be released alongside it.
  • December 4th - The Kickstarter was delayed, though the demo would still release.
  • December 5th - Demo 2 released, featuring an updated version of the Ancient level, plus a Factory level.
  • December 13th - The Kickstarter was cancelled in favor for donating to Patreon. Subscribing would also include getting a new Patreon-exclusive demo once in a while.
  • December 22nd - A Christmas race was announced in the form of a new build. The first three people that would reach the exit would get free Patreon for a month.

2019

  • January 12th - Tumblr updates stop entirely.
  • March 7th - Game development switches from Game Maker Studio to Game Maker Studio 2.
  • April 1st - An April Fools demo is released, debuting Greaseball as a Golf gimmick, instead of the semi-basketball gimmick from the previous January Patreon build.
  • September 26th - A demo was released for SAGE 2019.
  • October 30th - Noise's Hardoween, a demo featuring Pizzascare, is released.
  • November 29th - The concept of co-operative play was toyed with.
  • December 30th - Peppino's Xmas Break, a demo featuring Strongcold, is released.

2020

  • Circa January 17th - "Thing of the week" videos begin being uploaded on YouTube.
  • February 6th - A Level Editor gets developed by Sertif, landing him a role as a programmer on the main game.
  • April 12th - The Vigilante is revealed to be a playable character (before being scrapped).
  • July 10th - Gustavo is given a more substantial role in the Gnome Forest level, being previously only given a cameo in Peppino's Xmas Break.
  • December 17th - The final "Thing of the week" video is posted, aptly titled "Thing of the end of the year"

2021

  • February 2nd - Peppino reacts to a trailer showcasing War and some level backgrounds, and gets a Big Gulp in the process.
  • April 3rd - The UI gets a decent overhaul.
  • July 22nd - McPig announces some changes and revisions to the game in "Pizza Tower Dev Log #32: I don't know what is going on".
  • September 25th - Gameplay was temporarily adjusted, and met with mixed (but not positive) reception among playtesters.
  • November 27th - P ranks are introduced.

2022

  • February 24th - A devlog was uploaded titled "Still working on it?" That featured what McPig has done up to that point.
  • April 30th - Testing for the Eggplant Build begins.
  • June 13th - The Eggplant Build was released featuring a complete overhaul compared to the previous playtest build.
  • October 26th - Octobe22 is shared with playtesters, marking the last standalone playtest build before the jump to Steam.
  • November 27th - Playtest builds now move to Steam.
  • December 2nd - The final trailer for the game was released, showing the release date of January 26th, 2023.

2024
