This page details prerelease information and/or media for Postal 2.

  • Find sources for some of these statements; some of them are really dubious.

Postal was very violent in the beginning, with Running With Scissors having gone for a serious and harsh tone for what would be when someone "goes postal". Postal 2 changed the formula to be less scary, and instead focus on dark humor and jabs at certain real-world controversies.

The video featured here is of a closed presentation of the game that was held in E3 2002.

Main Menu

  • The main menu shown at E3 was originally the opening and the menu at once, the menu displayed the various options on a torn piece of paper (like in the original Postal) after the cast roll.
  • Only three options existed: Start, Options and Exit.
  • Multiplayer was available in the alpha, but was removed and never returned until the standalone Share the Pain expansion.

Loading Screen

  • The loading screen graphic was of one of the graphics from Postal's ending. Only one of these appear to have existed, which is labelled Day 1.

Gameplay

  • Postal 2 originally had no story, but it may have been excluded from the alpha to showcase the game.
  • The Postal Dude was to start from inside his house that was behind a trailer, instead of the trailer itself.
    • He was also supposed to be a silent protagonist, but had lines recorded for taking damage.
  • The task to return a library book was to occur on the first day.
  • Geometry of some maps were notably different, as the RWS headquarters are instead to the left rather than straight ahead like in the released game.
    • Additionally, Vince Desi's office is not deeper into the building and closer to the lobby. The interior of the building also had completely different texturework.
  • The marching band could be killed as part of a task, instead of like in the final game where killing them is of the player's own volition.
    • Elephants would've also been included during their street parade, instead of just in the parade grounds. They would've also went around the book repository and Lucky Ganesh instead of around the starting area.
  • Characters killed go into their death animations, as ragdoll physics didn't exist yet. They still use this fallback death in the final game if the ragdoll settings are limited, though.
  • Mirrors appear to be nonfunctional.
  • The Jacked In/Jacked Off Communications building had a different entrance.
  • The inhabitants of Paradise would either help the Postal Dude or harass him on the final day, based on choices made during the course of the game; they offer him some items during tasks, or attack and (try to) steal from him.

NPCs

  • No Taliban terrorists exist yet.
  • Female Parents for Decency members appear to have had longer skirts.
  • More protest groups were planned; politicians, gay rights activists (whose dialogue still exists in the final game), and metalheads.
  • As can be told from the alpha gameplay, Vince Desi had no dialogue but would tell the Postal Dude that he is fired.
    • His AI had also not yet been coded, so he is docile even when the PFD group attacks.
  • ATF officers had different uniforms.

Weapons

  • Kicking was not yet possible, and the weapon placement was work-in-progress.
  • Items and weaponry originally stood upright on the ground like in many Unreal Engine games, instead of on the side.
  • The Machine Gun originally had an ACOG scope and other attachments instead of just a plain M16. It also fired slower than in the final game.
  • The Shotgun was originally based on the SPAS-12 and had dirty-looking textures and a wooden pump; the design would eventually be used in the Eternal Damnation mod as a secret weapon, and would later be implemented into Postal 2 proper (also as a secret weapon) after its Steam release.
  • The Pistol's design was a hybrid of the Desert Eagle and Colt M1911. It also used the same firing sound made by the sub-machine gun in Postal.
  • The Gas Can had a different model and was coloured red.
