Slime Rancher, as Monomi Park's first game, went through a fair amount of development even before the game was brought to the public for testing.

Development History

  • Early, unknown date - The proof of concept for the game that would become Slime Rancher is developed. An image of this proof of concept was posted to the Monomi Park blog in December 2015[1].

  • November 13th - Slime Rancher is officially announced on Monomi Park's blog[2] with early development screenshots. The upper shot depicts an early Rock Slime, a Pink Slime, and a green slime speculated to be an early version of the Rad Slime. The lower screenshot, however, is more interesting, depicting Pink Slimes along with mysteriously plain blue, red, green, and yellow slimes, as well as a black slime with a red mouth in the background. It is speculated that this image depicts an early version of the Tarr, though this is not confirmed by development staff.

  • February 2nd - Rock Slimes are given their official introduction on Monomi Park's blog[3]. Unlike in the final release, they are said to eat fruit instead of veggies, with their preferred fruit being Prickle Pears at the time. An early version of the Prickle Pear is also depicted in the image along with the early Rock Slimes, looking much like they do in the final release.
  • May 27th - A gif is posted to Monomi Park's Twitter page[4], showing a very early version of the Vacpack and an untextured arm.
  • June 4th - A series of gif images are posted on Monomi Park's blog[5], revealing low-quality but early images of the game in action. The sixth gif down, however, is especially interesting, showing what appears to be some sort of rain effect on the Ranch, something which never happens in the final game, as there are no weather effects except for the Glass Desert's Solar Anomalies.
  • June 12th - Another gif is posted to Monomi Park's blog[6], this time revealing the original art direction for the slime splats.

  • July 8th - The reveal trailer is posted to Monomi Park's blog[7]. It showcases pre-alpha versions of the Dry Reef, the Ranch, several fruits and veggies, Roostros and Hen-Hens, Corrals, Gardens, and various types of slimes, including Largos, feral slimes, and regular slimes. The game is slated to have its full release in 2016 at this point in development.
  • July 18th - Monomi Park posts another gif to their Twitter page[8] revealing the development of something called "slimenadoes". This effect as a random weather occurrence does not happen in the final game, though Dervish Slimes are able to kick up something similar.
  • October 5th - Early pictures of the Moss Blanket are shown on Monomi Park's blog[9]. These show an early version of the gateway doors to new areas along with early versions of Honey Slimes and Boom Slimes.
  • October 26th - More gif images of the early Corrals, along with the first image of the house on the Ranch are posted to Monomi Park's blog[10].

Unused Slimes

Meteor Slime

The Meteor Slime was planned for the Glass Desert, but was never used. It would fly out of the sky, like the Fire Slime, and emit fire-like particles around itself like the Mosaic Slime.

Concept of many slimes from the Glass Desert, including the Meteor Slime.
