The Sims 4 started out as a completely different Sims game intended to be the successor to The Sims Online back in 2008, then codenamed Sims Olympus. Such idea ended up being scrapped later on, whereas it was decided to be remade into a mainline title.

Reception was heavily divisive before and upon launch. Though it was praised for its refreshed gameplay and advanced house-building, it was criticized for the lack of features that were present in The Sims 2 and The Sims 3 base games and the downgrade of furniture/clothing customization. The general viewpoint continues to stand in terms of the DLC that was released for the game.

Development Timeline

2008

  • Unknown - A successor to The Sims Online, codenamed Sims Olympus begins development.

2009-2012

  • Unknown - Sims Olympus is scrapped, what’s left of the project is used to create a new mainline Sims title.

2013

  • May 6 - Maxis announces The Sims 4 with a preliminary release date of early 2014, featuring a preliminary logo and a promotional image with the eyes of three Sims.
  • Aug. 20-23 — The Sims 4 is featured in Gamescom 2013, including playable demos showcasing Create A Sim, live mode, and build mode. The final logo was unveiled during the event.

2014

  • June 16-18 - The Sims 4 is featured in E3 2014. Its final release date of September 2 is announced.
  • Aug. 12 - The Create A Sim demo is released to the public.
  • Sep. 2-5 - The Sims 4 is rolled out globally during this time frame for Windows only.

2015

  • The macOS version of The Sims 4 is released worldwide.

First Look: The Sims 4 Official Gameplay Trailer

This video was published on August 20, 2013. Being around a year and a half older than the final release, showing multiple differences.

  • The font is different
  • The UI is very different.
  • Arrows that appear when dragging walls of rooms are different: blue instead of the final white.
  • The background in create-a-sim is different.
  • The pre-made sims, look very different.
    • Andre DaSilva originally had a beard, no tattoos, dark blue jeans, and blue sneakers.
    • Ollie Purdue has a very different outfit.
    • Sophia Jordan looks very different from her final counterpart.
  • The fine emotion is shown with a cyan color, while in the final it is gray.
  • The confident emotion is shown with a light green color, while in the final it is light blue.
  • The inspired emotion has a very different pose and is shown with a light blue color.
  • The playful emotion was originally called "Hysterical" and is shown with a yellow color. The final changes the color to pink and kept the "Hysterical" emote, but as a phase 3 emotion.
  • The sad emotion is shown with a dark purple color, while in the final it is blue.
  • The angry emotion is shown with a darker red color, while in the final it is light red. And originally it was going to be called "Furious!" instead of "Enraged" for the phase 3 emotion.
