Hmmm...
To do:
another possibly prerelease screen, from this CD-ROM

Wario Land II was first revealed in 1997, where it was announced for the original Game Boy. In 1998, the game was released internationally with Super Game Boy support, but the original version was cancelled in Japan; only the color-enhanced version was released there to coincide with the Game Boy Color towards the end of the year, with that version also being distributed worldwide a bit later.

Several early screenshots were released on the game's official Japanese website.

Title Screen

Pre-release Final (Color)

This early title screen was replaced by its colorized counterpart from the final Japanese version in an update to the website between 2000 and 2002. It has a few quirks that give it similarity to the original title screen from the version without Game Boy Color enhancements, such as the lack of a border around the logo. The copyright year is also listed as 1997.

Pre-release Final (Game Boy)

A screenshot of the first level with alternate coin placement in the overhead area. In the final game, some coins were either removed or repositioned. In a website update, this screenshot was replaced with a comparison of the Game Boy Color version playing on Game Boy and Game Boy Color.

Unknown Level

An unknown dungeon area that doesn't match any level design in the final version. Of note is that the chain of the weight carried by the D-Bat is longer than any other chain in the released game, there are objects that normally don't appear in this setting such as crumbled ground, broken ledges, and jugs, and the HUD seems to be missing. It is most likely an early build of Story 4 - Go Down To The Cellar.
