Sources

There's been some great work done on this page so far. However, as editors, we need to be sure to limit speculation and cite our sources. If we fail to do this, TCRF's prerelease pages are going to be no more reliable than other "beta" sites, which are often rife with misinformation and fan theories mixed indiscriminately into otherwise factual content.

I'll add some info to the help pages about using the wiki's references functionality, since I notice we're currently lacking it, meaning people probably don't know about it. --GlitterBerri (talk) 18:18, 11 March 2017 (EST)

Added a section about how to use reference tags to the Editing Help page, and some information to the Prerelease Rules & Guidelines page. Also added some reference tags to the article itself. --GlitterBerri (talk) 06:20, 12 March 2017 (EDT)
Thanks for the help with organization, translation, and sources. :) I do have sources for a lot of the unsourced information below, but they were disorganized and not specified in the article. I'll work on this. Catstorm (talk) 20:45, 12 March 2017 (EDT)
Likewise, thanks for gathering information! I've stumbled upon you in a few places online, looking for the same things I am. I'll probably continue to add to this prerelease article for awhile, so message me with "/msg GlitterBerri Hi" on IRC if you want to collaborate in real time. Looking forward to seeing your additions! --GlitterBerri (talk) 00:08, 13 March 2017 (EDT)

Unsourced Information

I removed the information below during my restructuring of the article because it was unsourced. It should probably be added back in once sources are available for it!

  • The games were also available to try at the World Hobby Fair in January 1998, but any possible differences between the two demos are unknown.
  • As Pokémon was primarily exclusive to Japan at the time, international gaming news outlets did not pick up on very much information about the actual demo, leaving little footage or imagery apart from the final game, official screenshots of locations, and the experiences of players who went to the demos. Because of this, most of the Pokémon here that differ from the final versions are known only from eyewitness accounts.
  • The official Spaceworld 1997 guide claimed that there would be over 250 Pokémon in the final game (which would be fulfilled, as there were a total of 251).
  • Breeding and Pokémon eggs were announced as features, but not implemented into the demo.
Picture Name Romaji Type Final Equivalent Notes
PkmnGS-Ledyba.jpg レディバ Lediba Bug/Flying Ledyba In this fan sketch of an early Ledyba, its head appears to be smaller or attached to its body, it only has four arms, and its underside is dark grey.
[None] ホーホー Hōhō Flying(/Normal) Hoothoot As in the final game, Hoothoot could allegedly be found at night in the demo.
[None] ブルー Burū Dark Snubbull Snubbull was shown in a promotional video which played during the demo. Despite Snubbull being Normal-type in the final game, it was allegedly Dark-type at this time.

Spaceworld '97 Demo Play Account Translated

I translated a Japanese fan's contemporary account of playing the demo, which seems to be at least one of the sources for much of the above information. --GlitterBerri (talk) 14:55, 15 March 2017 (EDT)

Spaceworld '97 Demo video

Just found some new footage of the Spaceworld 1997 Demo. It’s some of the clearest footage of the Spaceworld 1997 Demo that I’ve ever found. It includes early Hoppip, early Gold/Ethan colors, and the inside of an early tower dungeon. Not sure how to add some of the contents to the main article so, I wanted to at least link the video here. --Eisnerguy1 (talk)

A few observations:
  • Hoppip's name is ハネコ (Haneco) instead of ハネッコ (Hanecco), which matches what that Japanese fansite says.
  • Blastoise's moveset looks like it's straight from Gen 1: Bubble (Level 8), Withdraw (Level 31), Water Gun (Level 15), Bite (Level 24).
  • Bite is still a normal-type move.
  • Meowth uses Sand Attack, a move it's never had access to. --GoldS (talk) 18:51, 12 October 2017 (EDT)
Oh my god, this is amazing, there's so much new information here. I'll put this info in as soon as I can. Thank you so much Eisnerguy1 for the details & GoldS for details I'd definitely miss. Additionally Eisnerguy how did you come across that video? It's super recent. Catstorm (talk) 23:58, 12 October 2017 (EDT)
Catstorm, I just searched for "NINTENDOスペースワールド’97" and managed to find it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I thought the video was useless until I scrubbed towards the end. My jaw hit the floor when I realized what I found :D --Eisnerguy1 (talk)--

I found something else. It's a news report about Electric Soldier Pokémon and it includes footage of the Spaceworld 1997 distribution of Mew. The sprite on the distro machine is very similar to the sprite of Mew from Pokémon Gold. Not sure if it was the sprite of Mew in this early version of Gold/Silver but, the similarities compared with the sprite in Gold are pretty striking. --Eisnerguy1 (talk)--

Whoa, its eyes are bizarre. I didn't expect the distribution carts (?) to have their own sprite for Mew. I'll add this when I can. Thank you again. Catstorm (talk) 00:58, 6 November 2017 (EST)

Some of the Links at the bottom have died, should be replaced.

I noticed that GlitterBerri's translation of the May 2010 Account of Spaceworld has an error when I try to access it.

Nintendo also copyright claimed one of the footage links, and I don't think there's a reupload of it. Anyone got an archive?

Higher Quality Space World Footage

I've found some new footage of the Space World event build - or rather, a higher quality transfer of footage that's already known. Around 30 seconds in, the monitors can be seen more clearly than they have been before, and you can just about make out the Pokemon they're fighting, too - it looks like they're playing against a Marill. Not sure if this is worth adding to the page at all, but I figured I'd put it here to document its existence, at least - https://youtu.be/9Y7IMmNiQ3o --Hwd45 (talk) 15:20, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
