This article is a work in progress.
...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.

Pro Rally 2001 is the first game of the Pro Rally series. While this was a PC exclusive, its sequel would be exclusive to consoles.

Source Code Paths

Present in all executables are mentions of some source code files. All these files have "RallySim" in their path, referring to the game's earlier name of "Rally Racing Simulation".

Revisional Differences

Game has an OEM demo from Sony and Nvidia called Sony Pro Rally 2001 Limited Edition. Presented contents are almost the same as in the retail version.

Menus

Standard Limited Edition

The main menu has a Sony logo plastered in one corner.

No stats in right half of driver menu.

The single-player menu has only one option, "Start Race", which is actually the Time Trial mode.

Now starts the point where it becomes obvious this is a demo, as of the game's 24 circuits just three are present here: Finland SS1, Corsica SS1, and Australia SS2.

Standard Limited Edition

Similarly, just three cars are available: the Toyota Corolla WRC, the Renault Megane KC, and a fictional Sony Racing Team car that isn't in the retail game.

Also conspicuously absent is the music volume setting. Even stranger is that while Limited Edition has the music tracks present in its files, music doesn't work for some reason.

Exclusive Car

This version contains an exclusive car with Sony branding. It can be imported into the retail version when all of its files are copied over, but as a consequence it can only be selected through the Load Car submenu, so its preview by default can't be seen.

Track Textures

Hmmm...
To do:
Add image/video comparison later

AUS02.tdb, AUS02dum.tdb, FIN01.tdb, FIN01dum.tdb, POR01.tdb, and POR01dum.tdb (for the Australia SS2, Finland SS1, and Corsica SS1 stages perspectively) are slightly different. These files also can be brought to the retail version.

  • Podium and barriers at start and end of stages use textures with Sony and "CD-R" branding.
  • Objects at checkpoints also have Sony branding on them.
