Regional Differences

Hmmm...
To do:
There's quite a bit to cover here.

The North American release received quite an overhaul.

The intro in the US version adds logo screens for Jaleco and the NHLPA.

  • The Japanese version was not licensed by the NHL Players Association, and thus replaces its' logo with a fictional, but similarly styled, PHL logo.
  • The Fighting mode in the Japanese version was made unselectable in the North American version, though it can be accessed by setting RAM address 7E1000 to 02 (Pro Action Replay code 7E100002) on the practice mode select screen.
  • The Japanese version uses a light blue background in the main menu, while the North American version has a darker blue background.
  • The Super Famicom in the icon for Com vs. Com was naturally replaced with a Super Nintendo.

Teams

  • The Japanese version of the game replaces all of the players with fictional ones, due to (as noted above) not having an NHLPA license.
  • The line edit screen has a different layout.

Music

A lot of changes in the soundtrack were made.

  • The Japanese version has three unique themes for each period. The North American version has no in-game music, and instead adds a few jingles.

Ending

  • Both versions have the same ending; a black screen with a small box in the upper-left corner showing the ending cutscene. The Japanese version filled the void with a credits scroll, but the North American version omits the credits, leaving an awkward black screen where the ending cutscene screen is still in the upper left corner. This was a common measure taken by TOSE, to remove credits from the North American releases.
