Name Input Screen

The American version uses hand-writing recognition for the screen where the player inputs their name. It was, however, very clunky, which led to this feature being excised in the European and Korean versions, and all versions of the later games, for the traditional keyboard to make a comeback.

The Japanese release used also a slightly traditional keyboard.

U.S.	Europe/Japan

A profanity filter is used in the Japanese version, but nowhere else. It would give a different error message, but its graphics everywhere else have been replaced by a copy of the “This name can’t be used” error graphics; not that it matters, since it never appears anyway in the localized versions.

Voice Acting

This game and all further localized Layton games have a different dub for Korean language and each European language: there are Korean, French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Dutch dubs. The first game for the Korean and European versions used only the UK English dub.

The ending vocal song was replaced with an instrumental version in the localized versions. This change was carried in future Layton games.

Japanese Sub Chapter

In the JP version, when you boot up the game, there is a menu with three options: Main Game, London Holiday and a trailer for Inazuma Eleven. The Japan-only re-release, "Friendly Version", replaces that trailer with another one for Layton 3.

The second option from the main menu is called “Holiday in London” (ロンドンの休日). This option is absent from all other localized versions, possibly due to all of its puzzles being used in the first game localization. It leads to a sub-chapter serving as a continuity thread between this game and the previous one's events.

The whole chapter takes place in a single room with 12 puzzles. They are:

7-The Professor's Hat Box (W10 US)

8-Chicken and Chick (W18 US)

After finishing them all, getting 500 picarats in the process, the Professor reads the letter from his friend, which ties in with the beginning of the actual game. The sub-chapter ends immediately afterwards, and the game returns to the main menu.

It is worth noting that the localized version is based on the original version: it has unused menu graphics for Main Game, London Holiday, and the Inazuma Eleven trailer, although the data for the actual London Holiday mode has been removed.
