Proto:Crash Team Racing/August 14th, 1999 build/Unused Audio

This is a sub-page of Proto:Crash Team Racing/August 14th, 1999 build.

At this point in development, the voice recording sessions have just started. Therefore, inside the files there are a lot of planned dialogue clips for the characters that were placeholders until more voice clips were added into the game.

Unused Music

The race defeat and all podium fanfares are present within the files, but go unused in this build.

Aku Aku Announcer Clips

Unused audio files only present in this build reveal that at one point the developers considered Aku Aku to be the game's announcer. Clips announcing the name of the tracks and a few other lines that would be used during the races were recorded, but all of them were eventually scrapped. Only a very few audios of this feature survived in the final game, which are only related to hardware issues. Interestingly, variations of said clips spoken by Uka Uka also survived, implying that Uka Uka could have also served as an announcer if an evil character was chosen.

Aku Aku Fillers

A lot of duplicates containing random chunks of Aku Aku's cutscene dialogues from Crash Bandicoot: Warped is used here to fill empty audio spaces. There are at least two different audios that are duplicated through what would later become the Adventure's audio files:

Uka Uka is free?! No... it cannot be! Evil... great evil has come... Crash, now! (this final part was cut and it's actually absent in the final version of the cutscene. Interestingly, you can still hear it in the September 26th, 1998 build).

Children, Uka Uka and Cortex plan to use this Time-Twisting Machine to gather Crystals that lay scattered across time. I have brought you here to recover the Crystals before they do so. To open the time portal, simply stand on a button and then jump into the portal. Good luck.

Interestingly, Aku Aku says that dialogue in the intro cutscene, but this clip has the Time Twister sound effects included before and after his dialogue, as if it was meant to be a Time Twister interval, which never happens as you're told everything before you even access the Warp Room.

Character Voice Clips

At this point in development, Tiny Tiger, N. Gin, Ripper Roo, Pinstripe, and N. Tropy already had all their voice clips ready to go. Tiny and Roo's clips, however, differs from the final audio in some aspects.

Tiny Tiger

Tiny's voice clips are using the original voice pitch. In the final game, all of his audios had their pitch lowered and were slightly slowed down.

Ripper Roo

A few of Ripper Roo's audios were re-done in the final game using other chunks of the stock recordings. Some of the following ones may have been created for testing purposes only.

N. Tropy

One of N. Tropy's voice clips was re-recorded in the final game.

Placeholder Voice Clips

The rest of the characters' audio banks contain voice samples from Gavin James, narrating the basic actions of each character in a deadpan tone. The remnants of these placeholder clips are still present within Penta Penguin's audio files in the final NTSC-U release.

Developer Impressions

In the Options menu, the voice adjustment uses two sample audio clips of each character to preview the volume according to the slider position. Funnily enough, the developers decided to record their own voice impressions for each character and put them in the menu as a placeholder. Note that in this build, only Crash, Cortex, and Coco actually have these audios enabled in-game. Tiny Tiger, N. Gin, Ripper Roo, Pinstripe, and N. Tropy already use their actual voices, and the rest of the characters' impressions cannot be heard in-game, but are present in the files.
