Proto:Crash Team Racing/August 5th, 1999 build/Placeholder Dialogue

This is a sub-page of Proto:Crash Team Racing/August 5th, 1999 build.

At this point in development, the voice recording sessions haven't started yet. Therefore, inside the files there are a lot of planned dialogue clips for the characters that were placeholders until the actual voice clips were added into the game.

Unused Music

The race defeat theme is present within the files, but goes unused in this build.

Unused Early Intro

A music track not used in the final version of the game is present in the files, but as this build doesn't play anything at startup, it becomes unused. The composer Josh Mancell posted the "pre-console" version of this track on his SoundCloud in 2016.

Aku Aku Fillers

A lot of duplicates containing random chunks of Aku Aku's cutscene dialogues from Crash Bandicoot: Warped is used here to fill empty audio spaces. There are at least three different audios that are duplicated through what would later become the Adventure's audio files:

Uka Uka is free?! No... it cannot be! Evil... great evil has come... Crash, now! (this final part was cut and it's actually absent in the final version of the cutscene. Interestingly, you can still hear it in the September 26th, 1998 build).

Children, Uka Uka and Cortex plan to use this Time-Twisting Machine to gather Crystals that lay scattered across time. I have brought you here to recover the Crystals before they do so. To open the time portal, simply stand on a button and then jump into the portal. Good luck.

Interestingly, Aku Aku says that dialogue in the intro cutscene, but this clip has the Time Twister sound effects included before and after his dialogue, as if it was meant to be a Time Twister interval, which never happens as you're told everything before you even access the Warp Room.

Crash, Coco, if you have already retrieved a level's Crystal, then you will find a floating clock when you enter for the second time. This floating clock activates Time Trial Mode. Grab it and the clock will start ticking. Race for the end to get the best time. But beware, some elements will change.

Character Menu Placeholder

Originally, there would be unique menu voice clips for when a character is chosen in the character selection screen, but that idea was eventually scrapped. Unsurprisingly, N. Oxide is in this list.

Voice Clips Placeholders

The characters' audio banks contain voice samples from Gavin James, narrating the basic actions of each character in a deadpan tone. The remnants of these placeholder clips are still present within Penta Penguin's audio files in the final NTSC-U release.

Developer Impressions

In the Options menu, the voice adjustment uses two sample audio clips of each character to preview the volume according to the slider position. Funnily enough, the developers decided to record their own voice impressions for each character and put them in the menu as a placeholder. Note that only the eight starter characters actually have these audios enabled, while the unlockable characters' impressions cannot be heard in-game, but are present in the files.
