Proto:Croc 2 (Windows, PlayStation)/April 30th, 1999

This is a sub-page of Proto:Croc 2 (Windows, PlayStation).

A prototype dated April 30th 1999 was released by Hidden Palace as part of Project Deluge.

Most of the levels are the same as retail, with only a few minor changes here and there. The most prominent difference is the dialogue and text strings, which were almost entirely rewritten for the final release.

General

The legal disclaimer has an additional line:

Croc 2 is published by Fox Interactive, Inc.

The test level, AAAGH Mad Gobbo !!!, is absent from this build, as is the unused version of Chase the Choo Choo Train.
Completing the secret Caveman levels returns Croc straight to the credits, without even showing Croc rescuing the last egg. The credits have no personalized message about 100% completion, either.
A couple of text changes on the options menu:

Croc's health remains on-screen when visiting the options.
"Calibrate Controller" shows up in the text, but cannot be selected. The string was removed entirely in the final release.
- The menu associated with value 13 returns a blank option, making it possible that this was the original intended function.

Load Game Screen

There's an additional symbol on the name selection screen: . 🌸When selected, it acts as a blank space. In the final, this area also acts like a blank space, but is, well, blank.
The main text is a bit further down the screen.
The warning about switching memory cards is missing entirely.

Cheat Menu Differences

Displays the jumps as 'Jellies'. In the final, the NTSC-U game updates it to 'Gummis'.
The cheat menu in this build contains a fully working level select as opposed to just a hub select! You can select any level in the game. The only thing missing is the 'Map' function, meaning only the demo version of Find the Key! Save the Gobbo! is unavailable without further hacking. The old level select (which still doesn't work) is also here.
The level select here skips levels that don't exist, such as the missing levels, but it's still possible to load them by selecting a level ID first and swapping the hub ID. This will cause the game to soft lock on the loading screen. As there's no titles on the level select, it's possible for someone to crash their game unknowingly here.
The secret levels allow you to select levels that don't exist.
There's an additional option not found in the final:

. It does what it says on the tin, but only at the bare minimum - the Golden Gobbo is not collected. This doesn't work well for the secret levels at all, and always collects a red crystal instead of that level's specific crystal.

Swap Meet Pete

Swap Meet Pete speaks of the item selected first, whereas in the final he waits for you to make a selection.
Buy item is X in the prototype, but Square in the final.
This build allows Croc to select the exit, a feature which was removed in the final (but can be accessed through hacking).
- Due to this, Croc can also skip from the Clockwork Gobbo, to the exit, to the Heart Pot. In the final, if Croc wishes to get from one end to the other, he'll need to scroll over the jellies and crystal ball.
As with the rest of the game, most of his dialogue has differences:

There's also some missing dialogue. When Croc is ready to progress to the Inca Village, Pete starts to speak, but is cut off abruptly and instead repeats a random piece of dialogue from his text bank:

Levels

Intro

When Croc displays the note, the camera angle is different, focusing less on Croc.

Sailor Village

Croc just appears in Sailor Village. In the final, following the events of the cutscene, he lands there.
After speaking, the Gobbo that welcomes you turns abruptly. In the final, he doesn't turn unless Croc speaks to him from the side.
The Smash Box containing the Magic Eye-Zoomers is placed on the opposite side, much like how it's seen in the background screenshot in the final release.

The first Smash Box in the level remains where it is in the demo releases - to the side of the cave exit.

Find 3 Lost Treasure Chests

Known in the final game as Find 5 Lost Treasure Chests.
Despite the name change, this level is the same as the final, and you need 5 treasure chests to complete the level. The title was likely just accidental leftover from the earlier version of the level, and was fixed for the retail build.
The only dialogue that was changed:

Croc VS Dantini Boat Race

The Red Crystal was placed at the very end of the track instead of near the beginning of it.

Save the Bird from the Thief

Croc starts a little further back.

Get the Gobbo's Sandiwch!

Croc starts on the grass, rather than halfway up the cobblestone path.
When climbing the ivy wall, leaving Croc static at a certain point can cause the camera to flicker vigorously. It's also possible for Croc to fall right back down to the bottom after reaching the top.
When leaving the highest of the moving monkey bars, Croc can stop following it abruptly and potentially fall.

Chase the Choo Choo Train

The switch at the end is coloured red, and switches to green. In the final, it's the opposite.
If you don't hit the switch in time, no mini cutscene plays, and you're sent back to the Cossack Village.
If you do hit the switch in time, no mini cutscene plays here, either. Instead, Croc can walk right into the collisionless train, stopping only when the Gobbos want to talk with him.
Speaking of which, their dialogue was modified for the final:

Save 25 Gobbo Babies!

Known as "Save 30 Gobbo Babies!" in the final.
- Much like Find 3 Lost Treasure Chests, this title is merely a leftover from an earlier game, and you do still have to rescue 30 Gobbo babies.
In the final, Croc only has to walk over to the vases to break them. Here, he must tail whip or leap on them.
The wall in front of the carousel is extremely bright for some reason, suggesting a door would be there. This was fixed in the final.

Up the Waterfall

There's a second snake rope on the middle section of the waterfall. In the final, Croc has to swim across whilst fighting the current with no help.
In the same area, a rather unfortunate glitch can occur - Croc can slip through the waterfall and end up on an invisible plane underneath, making it hard to get back up without falling all the way back to the beginning.
