Proto:Deltarune/Chapter 1 & 2 Demo (2021)/Version Differences
This is a sub-page of Proto:Deltarune/Chapter 1 & 2 Demo (2021).

Chapter 1 Changes
This needs some investigation. Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page. Specifically: Investigate the files suffixed with _ch1 (but not _ch2). |
With the almost 3 year gap between Deltarune Chapter 1 (aka SURVEY_PROGRAM) and Deltarune Chapter 1&2, it's only natural that Chapter 1 would've seen a few minor tweaks and fixes along the way.
Librarby
In the original Chapter 1 demo, the door to the computer room in the Librarby was a single door located slightly to the left. Since this is the entrance to the Cyber World in Chapter 2, the cutscene of Kris and Susie entering it would probably look a little awkward with the original design, so it was changed to a centered double door in DRC1&2, though the right side of the door mistakenly lacks hinges. The computer room sign had to be moved to the opposite side of the door and shrunk as a result of this. Of course, Chapter 1 in DRC1&2 reflects this change as well.
SURVEY_PROGRAM | Deltarune Chapter 1&2 |
---|---|
Additionally, the original version had some stray pixels on the second layer that were removed in DRC1&2.
Wrist Protector
SURVEY_PROGRAM | Deltarune Chapter 1&2 |
---|---|
If a Chapter 1 save file is created with the DRC1&2 version, the Wrist Protector from the original version (obtained by reaching the Dark World in under six minutes) can no longer be found and its functionality will be enabled by default, even before going to the Dark World.

There's also a bunch of non-notable control character changes.
Platform Differences
Borders
As with the console releases of Undertale and the Chapter 1 demo, the console release of Chapter 1&2 contains various borders that are dynamically switched out Super Game Boy-style based on which area of the game the party is present in. In addition to the three borders included in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 includes three new borders themed around the Cyber Field, Cyber City, and Queen's Mansion areas.
[Press F1 For] HELP
Spamton's battles feature an Easter egg based on pressing the F1 key: during both his normal and NEO fights, it will summon Spamton angels that heal the party (which can only be done once per attempt). While these Easter eggs can be triggered on the home console versions with a USB keyboard, the player can also activate the feature with a controller by clicking the right analog stick.
Regional Differences
Librarby Interior
English | Japanese |
---|---|
Just like in Chapter 1, the Teenz-Own banner inside the Librarby is translated to Japanese.
Queen's Visor
English | Japanese |
---|---|
Some of Queen's visor messages are replaced with Japanese-language equivalents; most of these are written in katakana, tying in with Queen's technological theme.
Cyber City Screens
English | Japanese |
---|---|
Several of the screens that appear during Queen's first appearance and in Cyber City are translated into Japanese.
Annoying Mouse Room Signs
English | Japanese |
---|---|
The neon signs in the Annoying Mouse Rooms are translated into Japanese.
Spamton
The sales pitches that appear as one of Spamton's attacks in his first fight are translated into Japanese and use a thinner font (matching the one used for standard in-game text).
Kris's Mansion Room
English | Japanese |
---|---|
There's only one pixelized Toriel playing the piano in the Japanese version, probably because the "video game piano tutoriel" pun wouldn't make sense in Japanese. Notably, this is the only actual layout difference between the two languages.
Rouxls Kaard's Speech Bubble
English | Japanese |
---|---|
The "Hey" speech bubble that Rouxls Kaard generates in-time with the accompanying voice clip in "It's Pronounced 'Rules'" is translated into Japanese.
Pipis
English | Japanese |
---|---|
The crudely-drawn sign that appears when Spamton NEO starts his Pipis attack and when fighting Pipis enemies is translated into Japanese.
Spamton NEO VCR icons
English | Japanese |
---|---|
The mock VCR HUD icons that appear during Spamton NEO's ultimate attack are translated into Japanese.
Notably, the Pause icon adds a pun in Japanese, with teishi ていし "stop/pause" written as テイ死 using the kanji for death with the same pronunciation, rather than its normal kanji. Additionally, the Record icon, 殺エイ中, is a pun on 撮影中 satsueichuu "now recording", with satsu replaced by 殺, "kill". Both puns tie in with Spamton's affinity for making death-related wordplay in the Japanese script, replacing instances of "dai" (だい) and "desu" (です) with the English words "die" and "death" (e.g. writing "daisuki," だいすき, as "dieすき") and formatting the first-person pronoun "watakushi" (わたくし) as "わた94" (playing off of how in Japanese, the numbers 9 and 4 can be read in ways that are respectively homophonous with "pain"/"suffering" and "death").
TenderGoodbye.EXE
English | Japanese |
---|---|
Queen's "Tender Goodbye" is translated in the Japanese version as "Bye Bye Genki De Ne." As such, the filename banner that appears when she activates it is rewritten to reflect this; unlike the other translated graphics, this one uses Romaji.

Version 1.0.4
Released on September 19, 2021.
- Fixes a softlock that occurs when standing in Noelle's way as she jumps back from the other side of the laser wall in the "DECEMBER" room.
- Fixes a softlock that occurs when sparing Poppups while other party members are performing an ACT.
- Fixes a crash that occurs after helping a Swatchling and breaking a vase in the Acid River.
- Fixes a crash that occurs when performing the "Block" ACT on Poppups with frame-perfect precision.
- Fixes a crash that occurs when pressing the spacebar in two rooms in Queen's mansion.
- Fixes a crash that occurs when pressing up while inserting the LoadedDisk into the NEO robot in the mansion basement.
- Fixes a crash that occurs when checking the Recruits menu at a save point at the end of the game when only some enemies have been recruited.
Version 1.0.5
Released on September 21, 2021.
- The player is allowed to quit after losing to Giga Queen, instead of being forced to restart the fight.
- Losing to Queen and Berdly has the player respawn closer to her room with the party's HP restored.
- Losing to the teacup ride in the mansion basement respawns Kris in the same room instead of forcing them to restart from the beginning of the area.
- Losing to Spamton NEO respawns Kris just before inserting the LoadedDisk, so that the player can backtrack.
- Fixes an error in which the three damage numbers at the end of Spamton NEO's fight in the Weird Route improperly display as blue (Kris' color); they now properly display as yellow (Noelle's color).
- Unspecified additional bugfixes.

Version 1.06
Released on September 23, 2021.
- Fixed an issue where Spamton NEO's ShadowCrystal didn't carry over to the player's Light World inventory as Glass.
- Fixed an issue where Sweet Cap'n Cakes' attacks, which are synced to their battle music, lasted an unusually long time.
- If the player fires six to ten charged shots during the Spamton NEO fight via a glitch that allows them to do so in quick succession (pressing Z while holding down Enter, or vice-versa), he will become visibly angry and his attacks will increase in strength. The latter effect amplifies with continued use of the glitch, though becomes more lenient if the player repeatedly loses the fight.
- Fixed the "Wrong Warping" bug. It now requires holding X and C to execute, so that the bug doesn't affect casual players while still being accessible to speedrunners.
- Unspecified additional bugfixes.

Version 1.07
Released on September 30, 2021. Also known as version 1.03 on PS4 and version 1.03b on Switch.
- The X key can now be held down to reduce the SOUL's movement speed on the Bullet Board by 50%, making it easier to navigate tight spaces between certain projectiles.
- Defeating Jevil in Chapter 1 now adds a ShadowCrystal to the Key Items section of the inventory, which can be imported to Chapter 2.
- Checking Kris' bed after completing Chapter 2 once now allows them to instantly skip to the Cyber World, similarly to in Chapter 1.
- Lancer has new dialogue during the Chapter 2 prologue when importing data from a Chapter 1 file that saw enemies defeated with violence. Lancer now clarifies that he used his new powers as king to grant the party amnesty, allowing Castle Town's residents to forgive them.
- Spamton NEO becomes "subtly more difficult" when angered by the consecutive charged shot glitch: some of his later attacks like the second phone wave attack will come much earlier in the fight, and the heart attacks' bullets will be more randomized to make it trickier to dodge.
- Ralsei's FluffyGuard R-Action in the Spamton NEO fight is altered to allow the player to pause the shield's rotation with the X key.
- The Pipis enemies you fight in the Weird Route now have a 1% chance of becoming Ms. Pipis, which functions identically to a regular Pipis apart from having a pink bow added to its sprite. (Presumably, this is what the stretched "Pipis Fanservice" line in the official changelog is referring to.)

Version 1.08
Released on February 22, 2022. Also known as version 1.04 on PS4 and Switch.
- The game is now built with GameMaker Studio 2 2022.1.
- Sprites of the two chapters are now put into their own texture group. Only when the player chooses to play one of the chapters, the game will load the texture group for it.
- As a part of this system, a new room has been added for reloading the game, causing room IDs to shift by one, which wound up causing a critical save file bug.
- A loading screen was added for consoles.
- Most debug messages were removed.
- The copyright dates in the title screens were changed to 2018-2022.
- During a battle, if the cancel button was already held when the attack starts, movement speed won't be slowed.
- Made it so that if you freeze some but not all enemies in a battle, the encounter is always determined to be ended by violence, fixing an exploit that could be utilized for stat farming.
- Rouxls has unique lines when defeated violently.
Character | Text |
---|---|
Rouxls | * So thou hath beateneth The Crappeth out of Me. * I supposest that means thou thinkest thoust hath Won? |
Ralsei | * Um... morally, no. * Physically... yes. |
Rouxls | * Well shivereth my timbereth, you little bimbo! |
- A glitch in which the player is able to clip through the rolling pottery/Pipis obstacles in Queen's mansion is incorporated as a proper gameplay feature. Doing so now causes them to break apart and fly offscreen, enabling the use of this technique in glitchless speedruns.
- Swatchlings now display the correct dialog in battle.
- The flag tracking who you gave the gift to in Cyber City is no longer forcibly set to "given to Ralsei" in the boat ride cutscene's code, so Susie's present correctly appears in her room if you gave her the gift. However, the dialogue that is supposed to appear if you didn't give the present to Ralsei has also been made deliberately unreachable - the developers' intent likely was to simply make the dialogue unreachable. Save files made with older versions that are past the boat ride are not affected by this fix.
- The classroom's appearance has been changed.
- Fixed more places where the music would sometimes overlap on console.
- Changed the way files are saved on console. This fixes a bug in the PS4 version where save files could become corrupt under certain circumstances. Also, the game now checks for save validity, and notifies you if a save is corrupt.
- The VCR icons in the Spamton NEO fight now properly displays during the final attack in all circumstances, rather than just in the Weird Route.
- The Spamton NEO fight now has a new smoke effect after the final attack.
- Ralsei now will snap Spamton NEO's wires desperately as intended.
- The doll of Yoki (one of Temmie's characters) in Seam's shop was updated in Chapter 2 to match her redesign in Temmie's game Dweller's Empty Path. The old design was mistakenly still used during Chapter 1, which this update fixes.
Prior to Version 1.08 | Version 1.08 onwards |
---|---|
- The description for Kris' ACT "spell" is changed.
To do: Compare the old and new ACT descriptions. |
- Changed the TP cost of X-Slash and TurboDodge from 62.5 to 62, presumably to prevent TP rounding errors.
- Properly refers to the objects created with the FluffyGuard ACT in Spamton NEO as "fluff balls" instead of "tiny Ralsei". The latter seems to be a leftover from early development, in which the sprites for FluffyGuard were indeed miniature Ralsei heads.
v1.00 | v1.08 |
---|---|
* You have too many tiny Ralsei! |
* Too many fluff balls! * Can't make any more! |
- The ending of the Spamton NEO fight now sets the HP of any party members to 1 if their HP is below 1.
- The amount of healed HP in Spamton fights when you press F1 is now rounded.
- Fixed a typo in the following dialogue.
v1.00 | v1.08 |
---|---|
* That such a story, created for a such a simple purpose, |
* That such a story, created for such a simple purpose, |
- The "[NO TEXT]" placeholder strings are now only shown if debug mode is enabled.
- Added unreachable code to spawn the unused birthday dog "attack" in the Queen fight, supposedly for Taxiderby's presentation of the "attack".
- Sweet Cap'n Cakes will now only target Kris on the first, third, and fifth turns, aiding a speedrun strategy in which the first phase of the fight is ended prematurely by downing Kris as soon as possible (enabling Susie and Ralsei to learn S-Action and R-Action without requiring Kris to use the "Dance" ACT on Sweet, Cap'n, and K_K at least once each).
- For some reason, if Sweet is the only one that's dancing, Sweet Cap'n Cakes will target everyone no matter the turn.
- Many other miscellaneous bugfixes.
This needs some investigation. Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page. Specifically: Maybe check the JSON language files, as well as sprites. |
The changelog claims that the update "fixed an error where Alphys had the wrong face during a certain dialogue", but in fact, nothing related to that was changed.
This version was quickly reverted for PCs, after a bug with loading save files (due to the change in room order, loading saves puts you in the wrong place) was discovered.
Version 1.09
Released on February 24th, 2022. Also known as 1.05 on PS4 and Switch. No changelogs were published for this version.
- Changes were (explicitly or inexplicitly) made in response to the v1.08 save file bug.
- When a save file is loaded, the game now checks if the destination room of the save file is in a "valid rooms" list; if it doesn't, it adds 1 to the room's ID - likely to compensate for the extra room added by v1.08 - and does the check again just to be sure. However, if the second check fails, the original ID is not restored, which causes unintended results.
- Added a workaround for loading saves unexpectedly putting you into the empty version of Castle Town.
- The game now saves its version to save files.
- The plot value is now shown in the Chapter 1 debug mode. This likely assisted with creating the valid room list.
- You can now change the game speed by pressing ~ or Ctrl+~ on a keyboard when debug mode is enabled in Chapter 1. ~ changes the speed to 150 FPS, while Ctrl+~ changes the speed to 10 FPS. Pressing the shortcut again changes the game speed back to 30 FPS.
- The debug mode switch is now properly set to disabled in the chapter select screen.
- Removed all code in obj_debugProfiler and obj_jean_debug, presumably as a workaround for a bug where you can get some Chapter 2 debug features in Chapter 1, by loading Chapter 2 and then quickly exiting to the Chapter Select screen and entering Chapter 1.
- Fixed a bug with the slow soul mode, where holding C during a battle and pressing Z toggles it off.
- Made it so that interacting with the bed in the Castle Dojo registers the interaction to flag 412, allowing the originally unreachable "You retained the title of Bed Inspector." dialogue when you interact with Noelle's bed to appear as intended. Previously, this was only done by the bed in the unused room_cc_clover room.
- Added back the code that shows Undertale 's Switch eShop page in the console-only splash screen, which was accidentally removed in v1.08.
Version 1.10
Released on February 25th, 2022. Also known as 1.06 on PS4 and Switch.
- Changes to the room validation system were made.
- The original destination room ID is now restored if the second check fails.
- It is now skipped if a temporary save file is being loaded.
- The Maze of Death room in Chapter 1 was added to the "valid rooms" list.
- It now prints additional debugging messages.
- When saving in debug mode, the game now calls scr_add_valid_room with the current chapter, the current room, and the current plot value. What this does is currently unknown, as the function appears to be dummied out in the release version.
Version 1.12
Released on April 11, 2022, under the chapter1.2.112.windows7fix
beta branch on Steam. Possibly claims to be 1.07 when run on PS4 and Switch.
- Updated GameMaker version to 2022.2, which includes a fix to the game crashing on Windows 7. This meant YoYo Games' new Steamworks extension has to be used in Steam builds, causing the game to carry leftovers from it.
- Chapter Select screen no longer erroneously forces fullscreen.
- A weird change has been introduced to Chapter 1's initialization code, setting global.chapter to 1, and setting global.plot & global.filechoice to 0. (TODO)
- Changes were made to the save system; a notable change is the use of custom room IDs. (TODO)
- Standardized audio volume between Chapter 1 and Chapter 2. Game volume is now consistently initialized as 60%, rather than 100% only in Chapter 1.
- Berdly's "spear blast bullet" objects as well as some Giga Queen attacks now set the volume of snd_rocket when that sound gets played.
- Added a variant of the snd_rocket sound for the Queen paintings in the Mansion, as well as another one for Spamton NEO in the "WHAT!? IT'S FOR ME!?" "attack".
- Adjusted cutscene trigger size for entering the door to ride the rollercoastor in room_dw_cyber_rollercoaster.
- Possible visual adjustments to the cityscape background.
- Fixed a softlock when Ralsei tries to ACT on a Maus as it is Upgraded.
- The cheese maze no longer appears after aborting the Weird Route, making it impossible to use SnowGrave on normal enemies.
- The music now stops after Queen's dialogue if she is violently defeated.
- Fixed a visual bug with GIGA Queen's speech before her battle.
- Giga Queen's fire breath attack can no longer happen instead of the final attack.
This needs some investigation. Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page. Specifically:
- They seem to have fixed input bugs in the chapter 1 menu. Not entirely sure to what extent, but there's code to prevent inputs now - what, the main menu or like battle menu? cos i kinda think If it’s battle it could be to patch that thing in the susie lancer fight - like the save menu. the uhhh.... main chapter save menu when you first load in |

Version 1.15
Released on June 6, 2022, under the chapter1.2.112.windows7fix
beta branch on Steam. Still claims to be 1.07 when run on PS4 and Switch.
- The Steamworks extension is now initialized properly.
- The logic to destroy the Cheese Maze after failing the Weird Route now also checks the internal route progression. Fixes a bug where the cheese maze would immediately disappear if the Weird Route was started and ignored, but only aborted during the maze.
- Berdly's halberd has been redrawn to be more consistent.
- Position checks were altered for the bullets in the Queen fight.
- Chapter 1 now ensures the invincibility timer is set to 1 after starting/loading a game and after beating the King fight. This fixes a bug where heightened invincibility frames could be retained from the King battle.
- Fixed visual issues with the speedlines effect of the GIGA Queen fight.
- Fixed a rendering bug with a tile in room_dw_city_big_3.
