This is a sub-page of Proto:Disney's Toontown Online.

Toontown Online was first released as Beta 1, sometime at the beginning of September 2001. It lasted until January 16, 2002, where it predates the implementation of many fundamental game mechanics. A client release of Disney's Toontown Online Beta 1 (sv1.0.5) was released on October 8, 2020. This build comes from Joe Shochet, a former programmer and project lead at Disney Online.

All of the content there will be compared with the first public release of the game on June 2, 2003. (sv1.0.6.4)

General Differences

  • Many of the menus are still in their basic state, such as the Shticker Book and loading screen.
  • The Toontorial was completely different, taking place in an instanced Toontown Central. Mickey Mouse welcomes you to Toontown, walks you through basic movement and ToonTalker, and guides you to the Trolley.
  • Toon nametags at this point were red instead of orange and then later on green. The player's nametag was of a less saturated red rather than blue and NPCs had blue ones instead of dark green and then orange.
  • Speedchat, called ToonTalker in this build works differently; rather than have a set of phrases, they could originally be made in the form of a sentence build consisting of words.
  • Street Names have not been implemented. Instead, tunnels state which Playground they lead to.
  • Toon HQs and Gag Shops have not yet been implemented. In their place stand unused shops.
  • Gags can only be bought from playing Trolley Games.
  • Treasures are represented by actual treasure chests rather than playground-specific objects.
  • Your Toon couldn't jump.
  • All instances of Cogs in the game were capitalized as "COGs".
  • Cogs didn't have types on their nametags and were coloured blue.
  • Toons didn't get logged off after they're left inactive for ten minutes.

Removed Graphics

Clothing

Below are a list of removed clothing;

Overworld

TTOBeta tunnel sign orange.jpg

  • tunnel_sign_orange.jpg was removed from the final, likely for being too similar to the Toontown Central sign.

TTO sv1.5 DL stairs.jpg

  • DL_stairs was removed and a completely new texture occupies donalds_dreamland_safezone_palette_3cmla_1.jpg.

Playgrounds

Hmmm...
To do:
We need as many high-quality screenshots as possible. Each Playground also needs detailed bullet points of the changes.

Toontown Central

Hmmm...
To do:
Take an overhead view of the neighborhood and replace them with notable landmark changes in later builds from Release Notes.

sv1.0.5 - sv1.0.13 sv1.0.26 - sv1.0.8.6
Toontown Central Beta (Mercantile).png Toontown-Online-Clothing-Shop.jpg
  • There's a shop called "Toontown Mercantile" in this iteration of Toontown Central. It would be replaced later on.

Donald's Dock

sv1.0.5 - sv1.0.13 sv1.0.26 - sv1.0.8.6
  • As Toon HQ hasn't been implemented yet, the lake doesn't extend into the grassy area yet.
  • The lake is covered by an opaque water texture, rather than a transparent colored layer in the final game.
  • This is the only playground where treasures can be found at, rather than all of the playgrounds.

Daisy's Garden

sv1.0.5 - sv1.0.13 sv1.0.26 - sv1.0.8.6
  • All references to "Daisy Gardens" instead say "Daisy's Garden".
  • There is a smaller opaque pond placed where the Fishing Pond exists today.
  • A unique flower-covered gazebo is placed near the pond.
  • There is a bed of flowers placed where Toon HQ exists today.
  • Daisy Duck has not yet been implemented, and wouldn't be for a couple years after the game's launch.
  • There is a Tunnel leading to "Construction Zone", which is absent from this build.
  • The tunnel that would ultimately lead to Sellbot HQ is blocked off with a construction sign.

Minnie's Melodyland

sv1.0.5 - sv1.0.13 sv1.0.26 - sv1.0.8.6
  • A large merry-go-round with a horn base exists in the center of Minnie's Melodyland. The horn would later be replaced with Toon HQ, and the merry-go-round would be scrapped altogether with the introduction of fishing in sv1.0.8.6, released on November 14, 2003.
    • In sv1.0.5 in particular, the merry-go-round hasn't been implemented yet as walking on it will do nothing. The merry-go-round will then be added in sv1.0.7 and remained until sv1.0.8.6.

The Brrrgh

sv1.0.5 - sv1.0.13 sv1.0.26 - sv1.0.8.6
  • The pond in this iteration of the Brrrgh is a flat texture rather than a transparent layer in the final game.
    • it was also frozen over and due to this, it was able to be walked on over.
  • An igloo exists where Toon HQ is today.
  • Pluto has not yet been implemented into the game.
  • The tunnel that would ultimately lead to Lawbot HQ is blocked off with a construction sign.

Donald's Dreamland

sv1.0.5 - sv1.0.13 sv1.0.26 - sv1.0.8.6
  • The tunnel that would ultimately lead to Cashbot HQ is blocked off with a construction sign.
  • There is a sock draped over the bed that is absent from the final game.
  • Donald has not been implemented yet.
  • There is no entrance to the fishing pond area because of the yet to be implemented fishing mechanics.
  • The cobblestone textures are more saturated and less detailed.

Streets

Hmmm...
To do:
There are a LOT of differences between these streets and those in the final game, many of them being layout changes and building names that not yet had a "joke pass" from Jesse Schell. Get overhead render comparisons of them between this build and the 2003 release (before fishing update), along with some cosmetic alterations if there is any to be found.

Trolley Games

Hmmm...
To do:
Many differences.
  • Tug-of-War is present, but uses entirely different art. Grab screenshots.
  • Other trolley games likely have similar changes.

Tug of War

Race Game

Cannon Game

Toon Tag

Match Minnie

  • Match Minnie isn't accessible by normal means in this release.
  • An early version is present, with a design much more closely inspired by the game Simon Says.
  • This version pre-dates the overhauled version, which was implemented by Shawn Patton during his Summer 2002 internship.

Audio Differences

Hmmm...
To do:
Cover the music more;
  • MG_tug_o_war is different between files but sounds identical...

Music

A few pieces of music were changed. Many of them were recreated from scratch in the final and sound more or less the same in most instances.

tt_theme.mid (Toontown Theme)

The Acoustic Bass instrument was replaced with a Tuba in the final.

TC_SZ (Toontown Central Street)

The loop point at the end is slightly abrupt compared to the final.

minigame_race (Race Game)

Slightly different loop point at the end.

DD_nbrhood

DD_SZ

DD_SZ_activity

MM_nbrhood (Minnie's Melodyland Playground)

Slightly different mixing and end point. The earlier track also has a blank extra instrument slot for a Banjo which would be removed in the final sequence.

MM_SZ (Minnie's Melodyland Streets)

Again a slightly different end.

MM_SZ_activity

Yet another different end point.

TB_nbrhood

Another different end point. There was also a blank extra instrument slot for an acoustic bass, which would be removed in the final sequence.

TB_SZ.mid (The Brrrgh Streets)

Ditto.

TB_SZ_activity.mid

Song used inside The Brrrgh buildings. Has different backing compared to the final.

sv1.0.5 Final

encntr_head_suit_theme.mid

This song goes unused in the final game as well. Though, this earlier theme includes an extra opening segment.

sv1.0.5 Final

encntr_hall_of_fame.mid

This song was re-written three separate times counting sv1.0.5. Seems like the composers struggled with this one.

Sound Effects

Gags

Interestingly, the Gags had the most change in sound compared to the final.

Misc. Screenshots from the Era

Version Revisions

Hmmm...
To do:
Rewrite these rather than copy-paste Release Notes. Image comparisons would help, too.

sv1.0.6

Released around September 2001.

  • ToonTasks are now introduced, allowing toons to boost their Laff Meter and get rewards. They originally could be cleared by speaking to shopkeepers rather than at Toon Headquarters.
  • Buildings in the Playground can now be entered.
  • More ToonTalker phrases have been added, along with a reworked interface.
  • Secret Friends are introduced.
  • Cog Buildings are introduced.
  • The Ring Game was added to the Trolley Games.
  • New high-level Cogs are introduced in The Brrrgh, Minnie's Melodyland and Donald's Dreamland.
  • The Districts in the Shticker Book now shows the population.
  • Treasure Chests are replaced with Treasures (ex. Ice Cream, Music Notes, Starfish) in each playground.
  • Minnie, Donald and Goofy are added to playgrounds.
  • Several more streets get signs.
  • Toons' other names are now viewable on the corners.
  • More animations were added for Toon battles and for Cog and Toon building takeover sequences.
  • Various performance and memory optimizations.

sv1.0.7

Released on October 15, 2001.

  • Signs for Neighborhoods that aren't yet available are marked under construction.
  • Many Toon buildings had their names changed.
  • The Trolley Games have been updated;
    • Match Minnie now looks close to the final.
    • The Swim Game now has an easier to use camera mode.
    • The Race Game now has working chance cards.
  • Pluto was added to The Brrrgh.
  • The rising flower and merry-go-round was added to Daisy's Gardens and Minnie's Melodyland, respectively.
  • Streets now have names that are present on the tunnel signs.
  • The map on the Shticker Book now shows the playground and/or street you're in.
  • Knock-knock jokes were added to singular doors on streets.
  • Buildings now have Toons with new furniture and decor.
  • Collision issues were fixed.
  • Difficulty levels of Cog Buildings were reworked in line with the neighborhood's Cog levels.
  • Elevator lights were added to Cog Building doors.
  • Fewer Cog buildings are now present.
  • Gag Experience is now multiplied by floor on Cog Building levels.
  • Cogs can now walk in-and-out of Cog Building side doors.
  • New attacks for high-levelled cogs are added, such as Paradigm Shift.
  • Cog Attacks now have new sound effects.
  • The screen resolution and music/sound effects can be toggled in the Shticker Book.
  • The battle results are now reworked to show Gag Experience progress more clearly and updates ToonTask progress.
  • High-levelled Gags will no longer give experience against low level Cogs.
  • Experience gained inside Cog buildings has gone up. Your experience gained on each floor is multiplied by the floor level.
  • Use chat or use the Toontalker to whisper to other Toons without anybody else hearing. You can whisper to anybody on your friends list or any Toon around you by clicking on them and selecting "Whisper" from the Toon detail panel.
  • You will hear automatic whisper messages whenever a Toon on your friends list enters or leaves Toontown Online.
  • Toons will no longer ask you to visit a Toon building that has been taken over by Cogs.
  • To make it easier to find other Toons for your tasks, their building names and street names will appear in the ToonTask description in the Shticker Book.
  • Teleport rewards have been added to the ToonTasks to give access to teleport to the different playgrounds.
  • There are now tasks to defeat Cog buildings.

New Issues

  • Existing Toons may not have all the gags they had prior to this update. You may also have more gags than are allowed for your Toon (for example, 30/20 gags). To clear this, die in battle to reset your gag count. You will then need to complete "ToonTasks" to open these tracks up again.
  • The ability to teleport to other Playgrounds from the map now needs to be earned as a reward, but you can always teleport back to the last Playground you visited, or to any friend.

We have not deleted any existing Toon characters, but we recommend you create a new character on your account to properly test the new ToonTasks.

  • This update's patches are relatively large because so much new content is included. Future bug-fix type patches should be much smaller in size.
  • Some ToonTasks require you to defeat certain types of Cogs, such as Money, Corporate, Sales, or Legal -- see What's New for more on this. It is not obvious in the current release which Cogs are which. This will be addressed in a future update. To help you, Money Cogs have green dollar signs on their outfits, Sales Cogs wear dark plaid, Corporate Cogs wear blue suits, and the Legal Cogs wear brown suits.
  • Some ToonTasks require you to visit a certain Toon in Toontown. A future release will inform you exactly which building that Toon lives in. For now, look for word clues, such as finding "Henrietta Hog" in "The Hog Wash."
  • Although the free chat box is always available, only your "secret friends" will be able to understand what you type -- see What's New for more on this. If you see other Toons barking or meowing, it is because you are not secret friends with them. Use the ToonTalker to tell them to use the ToonTalker.
  • Another upcoming release should include Trolley Game improvements, new interface artwork, whisper messages, more Cog interiors, new Toon interiors with props, ToonTask improvements, and other enhancements. Please send e-mail to toontown@disneyonline.com with your suggestions and feature requests.
